we tried getting more information from school officials about the student like a gender and what he or she was doing in central america and if any other students were on the trip. citing privacy concerns, the official only referred to the statement sent over the weekend. you can read it online at wavy. com . live in williamsburg brandi cummings 10 on your side. federal investigators believe a housekeeper in williamsburg stole more than a half million dollars from her elderly employer. court documents say-- it happened over the course of a few years. the victim tells 10 on your side-- he thought they had more than a business relationship -- they were friends. 10 on your side's lex gray is here to share his side of the story. tom and nicole -- pete mcdonald says he could afford to hire someone to make his life a little better... so he did. his housekeeper was more of a friend -- and that's why it took years

14:24 you can't go thorugh life not trusting anyone, that's not who i am. pete mcdonald firmly believes that -- even after a woman he considered a friend allegedly stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from him. mcdonald hired dana morris to help him out around the house back in 2011. (1) 3:25 someone said they knew her, she job because i can't take my excess money with me and i can help someone else and help me at the same time. in exchange doing the laundry, and keeping him company a few hours a week -- mcdonald paid morris 400-dollars a month. but in late 2014, a check bounced that shouldn't have, and mcdonald went to the bank to check it out. (1) 7:18 she would take the $400 and put a one in front of it, make it $1400. but the amount continually increased and the last month or so she took some very substantial checks.

arrested morris january 13 on 19 counts, including wire fraud. i wanted to get morris's side of the story -- so i stopped by an address under her name and called, but never heard back. mcdonald says he's sharing his story -- so no one else is fooled. 22:35 i don't expect her to feel bad, i don't expect her to feel guilty. until recently -- whenever you completed a job application, you were probably asked whether you've been in trouble with the law. but now that question is out of bounds for government jobs in many states and cities. investigative reporter chris horne has more on the campaign known as "ban the box". governor mcauliffe signed an executive order last april banning the box for state government jobs. some of our cities here in hampton roads have their own ban-the-box policies. the object is to encourage employers to concentrate more on a job candidate's potential rather than their past. virginia has joined 18 other states that have baned the box on applications for state employment, and so have the cities of virginia beach, norfolk,

our full report at 615 - plus see how we discovered first- hand how tough it is for someone to stay out once they get out. chris horne, 10 on your side developing news in the federal court case against lumber liquidators. today the company was sentenced to pay more than 13-million dollars in criminal fines, community service and forfeited assets. in october, the company pleaded guilty to five federal charges-- involving illegal lumber trafficking. the lumber was manufactured in china, but came from illegally-logged timber in russia. the department of justice said: the penalty is one of the largest for timber trafficking in history. tonight hundreds are expected for a memorial service for the dooley family killed in last week's murder- suicide in chesapeake. it's scheduled at 7, at the deep creek baptist church. this tragedy has gripped the community. there have been several vigils already-- with family and friends leaning on each other. the bodies of todd, lori, landon, brooke, doris, and

last week at two different homes. investigators believe 26-year-old cameron shot and killed his family before taking his own life. at 5:45, 10 on your side's liz palka will have a live report with a preview of tonight's celebration of life. can you help the the york-poqouson sheriffs office locate a suspected armed robber? these are surveillance photos from the tabb exxon on big bethel road. investigators say a man with a silver and black handgun walked in around 6-45 saturday morning. the suspect is dressed in all black and wearing a surgical type mask. police say he demanded money from the register, ordered the clerk to the floor and then ran. if you have any information - call the crime line. concerned chesapeake neighbors can expect some answers from the navy tomorrow about contaminated water in their community. 10 on your side first reported the issue near fentress landing field in january. test results showed: drinking water near the field had high levels of dangerous chemicals. the navy says they were in the firefighting foam-- used in training

said lawmakers in 2012 illegally packed too many black voters into the 3rd congressional district. the court is set to hear that case - next month. looking ahead to tomorrow -- virginia beach school board is expected to vote next year's school calendar. board members approve a new calendar each year. this time the board must decide if there will be 183 days, like this year, or fewer. other cities currently have 180 or 181 teaching days.. a shorter school calendar would mean an earlier start and end date and a longer winter holiday. coming up on wavy news 10 - scientists in the u-k just got the go-ahead for research that's a first of its kind. what it could mean for future mothers. silenced no more. today for the first time since the early days of segregation, a newly-restored bell at one of america's oldest churches rang out as a a call to heal a nation. the "let freedom ring" ceremony in williamsburg drew people out from all across the country to move forward in hope. 10 on your side's anita blanton takes us to the historic event. nicole and tom, ernest hemingway once wrote a novel titled for whom the bell tolls. today at the first baptist church of williamsburg the bell tolled for healing for a nation. the bell tolled for strength for you and me. as we begin black history month the bell rang as a symbol of unity like music to the ears. something far more powerful than division has proved over time. we're learning about a large amount of power outages in virginia beach. right now dominion power's website had more than 14-thousand outages in virginia beach. dominion is saying its because of a mechinal failure.

and we're told power may be back on within the hour. a williamsburg healthcare worker is facing several felony and misdemeanor charges. james city county police arrested 28- year-old meagan howell of yorktown. she's accused of stealing drugs from "the pavilion at williamsburg place" on mooretown road, where she worked as a nurse. newport news police hopes you may recognize an armed robbery suspect. police tell us the suspect seen here entered the hop n shop convenience store just before 11 last monday night on jefferson avenue and held four employees at gunpoint while demanding money. no one was injured, but the robber got away with money. coming up on wavy news 10 - for the first time scientists are being allowed to genetically modify human embryos. what this research could mean for those

scientists in the u-k have been given the green light by a fertility regulator to genetically modify human embryos. it's the first time a country has considered the d-n-a altering technique in embryos and actually approved it. the research will take place at the 'francis crick institute' in london. the experiments are expected deeper understanding of the earliest moments of human life and could miscarriages. s/ paul serhal / fertility specialist :17 "repetitive ivf failure, recurring miscarriages, are very distressing conditions for a woman and if any such research can give a better understanding of early embryonic development so we can deliver a better service, it's the best news you can offer to these women." scientists say this is a rare opportunity because

hearing was fire works but then realized it was the sound of bullets. in this parking lot at the back of the mayfair apartments in virginia beach a man was shot and killed. mayfair is a small complex that sits just of newtown road. early sunday morning around 1-- neighbors say they here several loud booms. they knew right away they were gun shots. a few minutes later they heard a woman screaming rescue crews rushed out and found a man laying on the sidewalk. he was shot in the chest. he was rushed to the hospital and into surgery but doctors weren't able to save his life. 10 on your side spoke with victim's wife but she didn't not want to go on camera. police haven't released his name so we aren't going to either. we do know that the victim leaves several kids behind. as police continue to search for his killer-- family prepares to lay him to rest. police haven't said anything about possible suspects. if you have any information in the case give the crime line a call.
