in opium or heroin. that is the class of law in north carolina. in the paperwork i do not find heroin, but i do find opiates which is a drug with morphine like effects, derived from opium. today i also found the #1 witness against the welches to ask him about what he told investigators. it was clear why patrice welch's daughter was taking down the name dr. logan botzman from the animal hospital of nags head he is the #1 witness prosecutors will use against the welches if the case goes to trial, and apparently quit working at the business because of what he saw there today we went to barrett and patrice welch's home to talk about the botzman's accusations. a search warrant an investigator spoke with dr. logan botzman dr. barrett welch diverted controlled substances and took them from his practice for personal use it's been going on a year and he did this to coverup shortages. we found dr. botzman at his home. to a man named rusell taylor? i'll have that part of the story at six. a three-year-old child in newport news burned by a flat iron. tonight, police are calling it a case of child abuse. officers charged 24-year-old nathan horn with malicious wounding and neglect. 10 on your side's joe fisher is in the newsroom-- with brand new court documents. joe. these court documents say horn was in the care of the child while his girlfriend -- the child's mother -- was at work. this happened in september 2014. but after an extensive investigation -- horn was picked up last week half way across the country. "serious burns to his right forearm" court papers say a three-year-old child suffered two second-degree burns from a flat iron --- and tonight nathan horn is in jail for allegedly injuring the child on purpose. when the boy's mother first pressed horn for an explanation, he told her:

dragged through the iron." according to the court papers, he then immediately relocated to minot, north dakota. three days later the child's grandmother took the boy to the hospital. that's where doctors reported the suspicious burns. child protective services launched an investigation shortly after. police then get involved during the investigation, court papers detail a text message between the boy's mother and horn, where he writes, in part: "...if you only knew everything that happened." and "that look of fear he had is something i will always remember. ha ha." during the investigation, detectives traveled to north dakota to question horn last week -- he was picked up and extradited back to newport news. he remains in jail without bond. in the newsroom, i'm joe fisher, 10 on your side. authorities caught up with man accused of shooting his mother. los angeles police tracked down 20- year-old devante williams yesterday. he's now awaiting extradition back to virginia beach. the shooting happened last thursday at a home

ocean lakes area. the suspect's mother was seriously injured. williams is facing several charges including attempted murder and carjacking. norfolk police believe the same man is responsible for several burglaries. now they need your help catching him. detectives say the man in these surveillance photos has broken into 5 restaurants, since january 22nd. the most recent was on sunday. investigators say he stole cash from the businesses. if you recognize the suspect-- or know anything about the burglaries --- call the crime line. newport news police are looking for two armed robbery suspects. it happened last night around 9. two suspects armed with guns entered the a-t-&-t store on jefferson avenue across from patrick henry mall. they demanded money and cell phones from the two store employees before fleeing. an iranian drone that flew over a u-s-s harry s. truman last month, was the first to conduct an overflight of a u-s carrier since freedom of

sears announced it is closing a k-mart in virginia beach this spring. we have just confirmed it is the location on general booth boulevard. the retailer blames slow holiday sales for the need to close about 50 sears and k-marts across the u-s. a spokesperson says the general booth store will close in mid-april. in our sometimes rollercoaster economy, two-thousand jobs are opening at a popular theme park. kings dominion needs to fill 17-hundred positions before opening day on march 25th. that's 100 than they had available last season. job openings include positions in all departments at the park from rides, food and beverage, admissions, security, and more. there are entry-level jobs as well as supervisory roles. you

new at five -- virginia tech researchers are using thousands of mosquitos to learn more about the zika virus-- and its potential threat to the public. for a decade, researchers there have studied mosquito-borne viruses such as west nile and yellow fever. familiar with the mosquito's anatomy and how other diseases are transmitted --they're hoping to find answers to better understand the zika virus. researchers believe dissecting the mosquito's stomachs could tell them where the virus begins. and that could lead to more breakthroughs in combating this growing problem. :46-:56 [notes:kevin myles, associate professor at virginia tech] "i wouldn't say so

according to research, horses are able to discriminate between happy and angry human faces. scientists from the university of sussex showed domestic horses-- photos of mens' faces. they found: the animals responded negatively to angry expressions -- concluding domestication may have enabled horses to adapt and interpret human behavior. horses were also fitted with heart monitors --

revise an agreement aimed at improving how police and courts treat minorities in the st. louis suburb. the plan came after a d-o-j investigation into the deadly shooting of 18-year- old michael brown by a ferguson police officer. investigators found unconstitutional and discriminatory practices across the police force and municipal court system. before the vote council made several revisions to the consent decree. some council members raised concerns about the cost of implementing the decree which could run as much as $10 million over the next three years. looking to the race for the white house. two republican candidates are dropping out. carly fiorina and new jersey governor chris christy have suspended their campaigns for the presidential nomination. fiorina - the former hewlett-packard executive announced the decision today on facebook. she finished seventh in new hampshire's primary. governor christie, who finished sixth, just confirmed he's out too. it was a beautiful day
