and - fighting for his life. a police officer is shot overnight, now doctors are doing everything they can to keep him alive. but first, we're talking about the next round of winter weather to impact hampton roads. the radar is still clear across our area, but we can expect some big changes in the next 36 hours. this is a part of a system that's expected to bring slick driving conditions, extremely cold weather and snow. thanks for joining us this midday i'm brandi cummings in for katie collett. and i'm don roberts. let's take you out to the skies over downtown norfolk. make sure you grab those sunglasses and jackets - it's a cold one. let's get the latest from meteorologist jeremy wheeler in the super doppler 10 weather center.. this afternoon: bright, but cold. highs: mid-30s. winds: w 10-20 mph. tonight: mostly clear. lows: low-20s.

with a chance of light snow late. highs: low-30s. winds: but despite a bright day, it'll be cold with highs only in the mid-30s. winds will be blowing out of the west at 10 to 20 mph, so at times, it'll feel more like it's in the mid to upper-20s. clouds will gradually increase overnight, so by the time you head out the door tomorrow morning, we'll be under mostly cloudy skies with temperatures starting in the low-20s. an area of low pressure will develop offshore tomorrow, so that will keep the clouds around and give some light snow during the early afternoon hours. expect light snow through the afternoon into your evening commute. most of the area will pick up a dusting to an inch. farther south, through north carolina, we could potentially see 1 to 2 inches of snow! suffice to say, your evening commute will be a slow ride home. we'll be dry, but cold through the weekend. temperatures will only top out in the low-30s on

also happening today - hundreds of people are standing together against violence in hampton roads. the city of hampton is hosting a symposium that from all of the seven hampton roads cities along with several state leaders. they are all addressing crime among african american men. this type of gathering before. officials say it's time to send a message. the event began at eight this morning at the hampton roads convention center. it aims to reduce youth violence and boost black male achievement by featuring topics that engage young children and men. leaders say the goal of the event is for people to take ideas and information back to their communities and put them into action. we've got more details on the event on wavy.com a 59-year-old hampton school bus driver is in the hospital after being assaulted by a 14-year-old female. the incident happened around 8-30 this morning

say the adult female driving the bus had to be taken to the hospital after the assault. the eighth grade teenager was taken by hampton police. 10 on your side's erin kelly is working all angles on this story - you can catch her live reports starting at 4. we have new information chesapeake we brought to you as breaking news on wavy news 10 today. an early morning fire badly damaged a house on canal drive in deep creek. highway. investigators say someone called 9-1-1 saying the home's back porch was on fire. neighbors saw the fire safely. no one was hurt. but the family now has to find somewhere else to stay. crews are trying to find the fire. new at midday - norfolk police are on the lookout in the larchmont neighborhood. the driver has been approaching kids and asking inappropriate questions. this has gone on the last couple of days in the late afternoon. if

about the vehicle call the crime line. a controversial bill would allow security guards in local schools to carry a gun. for years, bills aiming to arm school staff have failed in the general assembly. however this new bill just passed the education committee. under the proposal, security guards would have to be retired police officers and get permission from the local school board before getting a weapon. some say the bill is a slippery slope, but gun advocates believe permit holders should be allowed to carry guns on campus and believe this bill is a step in that direction. philip van cleave virginia citizens defense league] liberty university is a virginians for responsible gun laws] if you can find an opening to crack open the door then next year you can add more things and push the door wider. those against the bill, say retired officers should at least have to go through annual training before they're allowed to carry a weapon on school grounds.

banned him from using the boy's restroom. the bill that failed in the house panel would have required school boards to adopt students to use restrooms and locker rooms based on their biological sex. proponents say it was designed to protect students' privacy. but opponents said transgender people should be allowed to use the their choice. the results are in from a new survey -- conducted by a career website -- examining the gender pay gap. according to glassdoor, the majority of working adults believe men and women at their company are being paid equally. but that perception doesn't match reality in several countries - including the united states. 89-percent of americans believe that men and women "should" be paid equally experience levels. polish up those resumes. there's a job fair in norfolk today. it started about an hour ago and goes until 2:00 at the doubletree by hilton near norfolk international airport. that's on north military highway. dress to impress because

we're following breaking news at this hour from mexico. mexican government officials say at least 50 people are dead after a riot at a noreastern mexican prison. the riots are just days ahead of a planned visit by pope francis to another prison in mexico. state government says the situation is under control -- but haven't released details of what happened. a new bill in virginia could raise the speed for reckless driving. the senate passed a bill that would prevent police from charging drivers for going 11 miles an hour over the speed limit. right now, it says law enforcement can charge people for going 81 in a 70-mile- per-hour zone. the bill would make the threshold for reckless driving 85-miles-per-hour. supporters say it helps balance an earlier bill that raised some interstate speed limits to 70 in the commonwealth. norfolk southern officials are staying

we continue to follow developing news from fargo, north dakota. a police officer is fighting for his life after being shot wednesday night. 33-year-old jason moszer went to a domestic call in the city - when a gunman shot the officer. a part of the city had to be blocked off as the standoff with the gunman continued. officers are working with the man who shot moszer to get him out of the home. fargo police chief david todd talked with

(s/ chief david todd / fellow officers, (starts crying) i'm sorry." officer moszer is in very critical condition at the hospital. according to our affiliate station in fargo, when the swat team went in the house, the found the suspect shot to death. protesters in south korea strongly against north korea's latest nuclear test and long-range missile launch held a demonstration today. about 200 people are calling for the south stern measures against north korea. the protesters set flags and photos of north korean leader kim jong un on fire during the demonstration. a chinese man is on his way back to the u-s where authorities for killing his teenage nephews. a document was signed during a court appearance allowing him to be extradited back to america. the found in california last month.

the suspect january 24th after he arrived in hong kong on a flight from los angeles. an extradition date hasn't been set. new information this midday about a deadly train crash in germany. rescue workers are still trying to get two trains apart that killed 10 people and hurt at least 80 more. the accident happened tuesday. a source involved in the case says the investigation is focusing on the actions of a signal controller. however, investigators say the cause is still being looked into the cause - although, they were able to find two of the three black boxes from the trains. often times - police need your help catching criminals. in the u-k -- one man is being called a hero for literally tripping a man police were chasing on foot. british police were chasing a suspect - when a man walking down the sidewalk casually sticks his leg out and trips the
