monitor road surfaces as temperatures fall throughout the evening. unlike previous snow events this season, friday's anticipated snowfall, which starts late morning and extends through friday evening, is expected to be concentrated on the eastern end of the district, specifically southside hampton roads. vdot hampton roads restocked its snow removal materials, including salt, abrasives and brine, following the late january wintry mix and capacity is sufficient to address the next round of snow. vdot crews will continue to monitor pavement conditions after any snowfall to check for pavement that could possibly refreeze friday night and throughout the weekend. motorists are encouraged to watch their speed and allow for plenty of braking distance if they must travel during these conditions. you can keep up with the weather through our wavy weather app. it's free for all apple and android users. a 14-year-old girl faces

police say she assaulted a school bus driver this morning in hampton. that driver went to the hospital - but is expected to recover. 10 on your side's erin kelly has been working to learn more about what happened. police say this started around 8:30 this morning. we checked with many neighbors - but most did not see it. the school division says a bus with about 30 students was on its way to syms middle school - and at the time this happened the bus was stopped. according to police, the bus was on grimes road. they say a 14-year-old girl assaulted a 59- year-old female driver. police took the student into custody -- charged her with assault and battery --as a juvenile -- and released her. we talked to one man who wondered what was going on. take sot> c0017 - patrick linkous - neighbor 335 i don't know what happened, but they were evacuating the kids off the bus and getting them on to another bus 339 hampton schools issued a statement, saying in part, the division expects students to behave

the student's behavior is unacceptable. the division says it will discipline the student according to the handbook -- and follow up on the bus driver's condition. live in hampton, erin kelly, 10 on your side. a sad story out of north carolina. a perquiman's county woman adopted a dog- 2 weeks later it mauled her to death. 10 on your side's matt gregory spoke with her family today. matt is live in the news room. stephanie, anita. the family tells me, susan story adopted buddy, a pit bull. she saw the add in a local paper. her mother tells me according to the previous owners the dog was harmless. until yesterday when something went fatally wrong. the perquiman's county sheriff says this happened around lunchtime yesterday. his deputies came to this home in snug harbor on a report of a dog attack. the sheriff says the dog attacked the owner, suzanne story while she tried to clean out his cage. she suffered multiple lacerations to her neck and eventually died of her injuries. today her family went to her home to pick up the pieces. they say story adopted the dog a few weeks ago. but had no idea this

young kid stuck in that water. crews found the kid waste deep in mud in knobbs creek near north road street. he was taken to the hospital - three police officers. all were treated for cold exposure and released. police call it national day of johns arrests. 24 people face charges after a two day undercover prostitution operation in newport news. the first sweep was on january 29th. it was on the streets, in hotels and via the internet the second round of arrests happened on february 5th. the men face solicitation of prostitution charges. we posted a slideshow of all the mugshots on wavy dot com. the case against the suspect in a deadly stabbing in portsmouth is moving forward. a judge has sent carl holder's case to the grand jury. police charged him with first degree murder. the grand jury will decide if holder will stand trial. for stabbing elvin elliot to death during an argument. it happened in august outside the farm fresh at

center. elliott died at the hospital. norfolk police say they are on the lookout for a car approaching kids in the larchmont neighborhood. residents say someone in the 2000 nissan altima has been asking children inappropriate questions. they say it happened monday. norfolk police learned about this through a nextdoor post. officers are increasing patrols in the area. if you have any information about the car --- call the crime line. a chesapeake family of three can't stay in their home because of an early morning fire. it happened around 4-30 on canal drive in deep creek. that's off south military highway. this was breaking news this morning. the fire department says neighbors discovered the fire. when firefighters arrive on scene --- a back porch was engulfed in flames. no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. after a months-long investigation --- a woman is behind bars charged in a newport news arson. 22-year-old charmaine march of virginia beach is accused of setting the apartment fire. it happened in october on marcus drive. nearly 100 new jobs are coming to suffolk.

investigators are looking into what sparked this raging fire in greene county, virginia. that's north of charlottesville. last night's fire was so big people saw it miles away. the family inside at the time of the fire escaped safely. after the roof collapsed --- firefighters let the flames burn out on their own. the log cabin is destroyed. a virginia woman says she and her 10 year old son have survived a living nightmare. now the stafford county sheriff's office is looking for the two men that broke into their home. danielle lucas says the

masks and carrying guns. she says the strangers tied her and her son up with zip ties --- then ransacked the home. "held guns to us and said if we didn't do what they told us to do they were the face with the gun right there and the top of my head right here. you have a bump. yes." lucas says the men stole several things --- including her purse. the terrifying ordeal was over in 15 minutes. investigators say the suspects may have targeted the home because of a third person who lives there. it could be related to drug activity. an albemarle county police officer is accused of racial profiling. officer andrew holmes faces several civil lawsuits. holmes is accused of targeting who he stopped and who he searched. officer holmes is white. the six plaintiffs in the lawsuits are black. one of the plaintiffs says holmes stopped him for no reason, held him for two hours and assaulted him during a search

that would have required students to use the restroom based on their biology is not moving forward. a house of delegates subcommittee killed the legislation. it's good news for gloucester high school student gavin grimm. gavin is transgender. gavin was born a female --- but identifies as male. he is fighting to use the boy's restroom at school. a judge ruled against gavin in september. an appeals court is now considering his case. a proposal to allow school security guards to carry guns is making its way throught the halls of the general assembly. it has passed the education committee. under the proposal --- the security guards would have to be retired police officers and get permission from the local school board. critics are concerned the bill is another step toward allowing more guns on school property. people who smoke cigarettes in cars with children could be hit with a $100- dollar fine. the house has given preliminary approval to a bill that would make it illegal to smoke in a car with a child under the age of 8. opponents say the legislation is an

the general assembly could increase the speed limit for reckless driving. the senate has passed a bill to change the reckless driving threshold from 80 miles an hour to 85 miles an hour.. supporters say the legislation helps balance an earlier bill that raised some speed limits to 70 in the commonwealth. opponents say the higher limit for reckless driving would make virginia's roads more dangerous. a peaceful end to the standoff at a government wildlife refuge in oregon. after 41 days --- the last four of the armed protesters surrendered. federal agents surrounded them overnight --- leading to hours of tense negotiations. the reverend franklin graham and a nevada assemblywoman convinced the occupiers to give up. protest leader ammon bundy was arrested last month. one of the protesters was killed in a showdown with police. the occupation was part of a long- running dispute over public use of federal lands. 52 inmates are dead --- 12 others hurt after a brutal fight between rival drug cartel members inside a mexico prison. it happened around

we're on your side with new information about a risky teen trend. e-cigarette use is exploding across the country. tonight the suffolk school board will hear a proposed ammendment to add e-cigarettes to its tobacco free policy,- meaning ecigs would be property and extracurricular activities effective july first. the board will vote next month. the health risks associated with ecigarettes are greatly unknown. a recent c-d-c report shows that the number of teens trying them tripled in

kurt lannetti, a norfolk high school student, told me he sees other teens vaping all the time. he will share his experiences and i'll tell you about a local study that is looking at ways to reverse this risky trend coming up at 6:15. some types of laminate flooring sold by toano-based lumber liquidators can cause irritation and breathing problems --- but the risk of cancer from exposure is low. that's according to new test results from the centers for disease control. a 60 minutes report last year claimed the laminate flooring from china contained excessive levels of cancer-causing formaldehyde. the c-d-c says if you installed the flooring and are concerned about formaldehyde --- open windows for a few minutes every few days, use exhaust fans and avoid smoking in the home. experts say formaldehyde levels in your home should return to typical levels within two years after the flooring was installed we reported last week: in a separate investigation --- lumber

u-p-s says it's investigating after a florida homeowner recorded a driver tossing his packages. the man's home security system footage shows the u-p-s delivery driver walk up the sidewalk and toss three packages over the fence. one of the boxes spilled all over the brick pavement. kevin halvorsen/homeowner "it was the last thing i expected, we usually have good luck with ups, generally they bring the packages they set them on the doorstep. this one particular time they just to pitch them over... the gate." powerful earthquake in taiwan is back with it owner. crews took the seven-year-old white maltese named "happy" in english to an animal shelter. family members of the owner saw the dog's rescue on t-v and rescued it from the shelter. the dog's owner is the hospital recovering from injuries from the building collapse. the death toll from saturday's magnitude-6.4 earthquake is 59. 76 people are still missing. check out this footage from a california firefighter's helmet camera. crews searching the sacramento home during a fire found a scared dog hiding in a back bedroom. firefighters pulled the dog out and carried it to safety. the dog was reunited with her happy owner on the sidewalk outside the home. no one was hurt. fire officials credit a working smoke detector with saving lives. the cause of the fire is under investigation. wavy news 10 at 5 starts
