across the state between midnight and 10:30 this morning. much of the same in virginia. v-dot is also warning drivers to stay off the roads. the wintry mix that turned to rain created a messy commute this morning. between midnight through two this afternoon, state police were on the scene of 538 crashes statewide -- including a deadly crash in fauquier county. the peninsula was one of the hardest hit areas. 10 on your side's brandi cummings is live with how it looks in newport news. brandi? tom, nicole- we have seen quite a difference in the weather here in newport news throughout the day. here's what it looks like right now... the roads are wet and there are some puddles. the side walks still have some snow on them but parking lots have snow mixed with main that has caused a slush. this is what it looked like here this morning. steady snow fall layered the

many people woke up to snow covering their homes and vehicles. we saw a snow plow pushing the snow off the roads. later in the afternoon we saw a man pushing the snow out of the parking lot in front of his business. as daylight came in we saw more and more vehicles on the road where we are at the intersetion of jefferson ave and main street. we also spoke to some drivers about how they prepared for the winter weather. sot- chanel smith, driver - clip 59 29:26 we just try to be prepared and make sure we have things ready in the house. we have salt that we can deice our steps so that we dont have any hazards and we get hot chocolate and movies and relax. the key here is - if you have to go out plan and allow extra time so you can drive slow and be careful. everyone we talked to said this weather hasn't affected their plans. but some of them are looking forward to

temperatures. we'll have another live report on conditions here tonight on wavy news 10 at 6. live in newport news im brandi cummings 10 on your side. developing news in a major fire from over the weekend. chopper 10 flew over the scene of the huge west ocean view fire in norfolk sunday morning. 14 buildings burned -- 8 of them are destroyed. that left up to 40 residents without a home. this was one of several calls around the region since this weekend. 10 on your side's lex gray attended a news conference in norfolk about this large increase in fires. lex? tom -- it could be weeks before we learn what caused the fires this weekend...but the chief says cold weather probably played a part. right behind me, you can see part of the damage from the most devastating fire this weekend in ocean view. everyone i talked to today -- including the fire chief -- got emotional talking about this one. one saturday night. that's chief jeffery wise -- talking about a fire in ocean view that took hours and more than 60 firefighters to put out. chopper 10 flew over sunday morning as crews worked to clean up...and find out what caused it. that's still not clear today. what is clear -- is that this could have been much worse. everyone survived, and no one was seriously hurt. the back of the two story home. the resident and his dog were outside. a home next door was also damaged. another fire leaves 10 people without a place to go after it tore through an apartment complex in virginia beach. we brought you this as breaking news this morning. investigators ruled it accidental. 10 on your side's stephanie harris is following developments. investigators are looking into the exact cause but they say it started on a third floor balcony around 3:30 this morning. these pictures show how bad it as before firefighters arrived on the scene at the linkhorn bay apartments on treetop drive. it took firefighters an hour to get it under control. one person went to the hospital for smoke inhalation but everyone else is ok. one resident told 10 on your side his military training kicked in when he smelled the smoke. then i looked up and the whole entire roof was engulfed in flames 2:00" one person was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. the fire department tells us 10 people in six units are affected by this. danny longoria who you just heard from said that everyone who lives in that apartment complex is insurance. he also said that they community and they're helping each other out. the red cross is also offering assistance. stephanie harris toys one person has minor burns after a fire destroyed a moyock home. 10 on your side viewers sent us these pictures of what's left on northwest backwoods road. six people were home when the fire started yesterday morning. freezing temps and a lack nearby hydrants caused problems for firefighters. the currituck sheriff's office is investigating the cause. it took firefighters about 20 minutes to knock down flames in the deep creek neighborhood of chesapeake. the house on martin johnson road was undergoing renovations investigators have no cause yet, and no one was hurt. several departments were

the weekend -- and newport news also had a very busy 24- hours, with more than one-hundred calls. (news graphics, 3 pics: "middlesex rd hazmat") a call of a possible home invasion on middlesex road turned into a haz-mat incident. the fire department sent us these pictures of the scene in the hidenwood area. police found items they say appeared to be used to manufacture meth. here's a breakdown of those 102 calls for service: 19 crashes, 6 fire alarms, 9 public assist calls, 64 medical emergencies, 3 house fires, 3 apartment fires and the haz-mat call. investigators say an unattended candle fell over and started a fire in a bedroom on chestnut avenue. virginia beach are looking for a robber, and they want your help. police sent us surveillance photos. they say the suspect entered the citgo located on diamond springs road last tuesday -- armed with a double-barreled shotgun. police say he then demanded money from the clerk and ran off toward driftwood apartments. if you have any information on this crime or recognize the suspect-- call the crime line.

troops from pakistan, kuwait and jordan arrived in saudi arabia today for a large-scale military exercise. members from 20 countries are gathering in the oil-rich nation, for "the largest and most important" military maneuvers in the region's history. the exercises will include air, sea and land forces. it's expected to last 18 days, with participating forces arriving from arab and african countries -- but do not include the u-s and other western powers. royal dutch shell-- europe's largest oil company-- expects to make robust investments in brazil's offshore. the company hopes to quadruple oil and gas output there by the end of the decade. the company's c-e-o spoke in brazil shortly after shell's 52-billion-dollar takeover of rival b-g group p-l-c took effect.
