walmart. andy fox broke that story. he joins us now live outside the portsmouth judicial center in portsmouth with what else he found. commonwealth's attorney stephanie morales doesn't want courtroom. former portsmouth police officer rankin is accused of gunning down william chapman ii in the frederick blvd walmart parking lot. the commonwealth's motion claims officers dressed in uniform will be intimidating and will have a "chilling effect on the jury's ability to deliberate with open minds and without fear of rendering a verdict based soley on the law and evidence presented." rankin's attorney disagrees with the motion and will argue against it next week. we also asked a chapman family spokesperson what he thought about it. on the phone earl lewis/chapman family spokesperson ((i dont' see how the presence will have any chilling affect on the jury deliberation so i dont see how the law enforcement

slaton now faces a second degree murder charge. state police found the decomposing remains of slaton's son quincy in her trunk when they pulled her over in june. quincy had been missing for 10 years. last month the medical examiner's office said they could not determine a cause of death. developing news in norfolk. police are questioning a suspect in an attempted bank robbery. detectives say a man pulled up to the drive-thru teller window at the sun trust on west little creek road around 8:55 this morning. investigators say he gave the teller a note demanding money. the note also said there was a bomb inside the bank. officers showed up five minutes later and arrested the suspect. no one was hurt. officers shut down part of west little creek road so the bomb squad could make sure everything was okay in the bank. when police file charges --- they will release the suspect's name and mugshot. new at 4. firefighters in norfolk say no one was hurt when an apartment caught fire today. they sent us these pictures of their response on victory drive in the wards corner area. around one this afternoon, they say

coming from the apartment and called them in. they say the fire was coming from the kitchen and spreading quickly. no one was home. they were not ready to tell us about a cause. portsmouth police are looking for two home invasion suspects. police say two men forced their way into a home on median circle around midnight. officers say they got into a fight with one of the residents. another resident, a 15-year-old boy, was hurt but should be okay. right now, detectives say they do not have a good description of the suspects. call the crime line if you know anything. new information in a meth lab bust in newport news. a woman is now behind bars facing charges. police say they found items believed to be used to manufacture meth on sunday on middlesex road. 28-year-old autumn wells is charged with manufacturing meth and possessing heroin. the tyrrell county sheriff's office says the alligator river bridge in north carolina is closed after today's high winds blew a trailer over the side. it happened around 10 this morning on the dare county side during a severe thunderstorm.

talked about what should happen to state money set aside for expanding light rail here. this followed a letter secretary of transportation aubrey layne sent delegate ron villanueva -- which said that money could be used for other state projects instead if city council chooses to take the issue to the voters again in a referendum. layne has said -- if the beach needs to hold another referendum -- it should -- but the commonwealth has limited resources -- and they can't hold for a project that might occur. today mayor will sessoms sent layne a letter in response. "5148 i believe he's wrong. i think virginia beach has shown a firm eis that's going on right now, 5159 we are honoring every timeline that we've committed to from day one. 5202 " layne says governor terry mcauliffe is very supportive of the light rail project. and if the city of virginia beach loses the $155 million -- it can reapply for state funding through another method.

is out of the hospital and behind bars. norfolk police are investigating a robbery in a grocery store parking lot. detectives say it happened around 6-45 saturday morning outside the harris teeter on granby street. the victim says four teens walked up to her car, pulled out a gun and demanded money and her car. the woman was not hurt. early the next morning police say officers located the stolen car. now they're questioning the teens inside. chesapeake police are asking your help identifying the suspect in an assault. detectives say a man attacked a woman during a disagreement near the intersection of western branch and churchland boulevards. these photographs are from inside a bus they two were riding on before the assault. the victim wasn't seriously hurt. virginia attorney general mark herring says his office has mailed restitution checks to hundreds of people who fell victim to a door to door sales readers services. the florida door-to-door

uncovered new information about a crash in portsmouth early this morning. we first told you on wavy news 10 today about a car that went off the western freeway at cedar lane. first responders found two people badly injured inside. but we've learned...police may have stumbled on a criminal investigation. 10 on your side's lex gray has been digging into this story today. lex - what did you find out. anita and stephanie -- i've been working today to confirm what two sources tells us... that in that car -- portsmouth police found about 150 credit cards with different they also apparently found a machine used to melt credit cards down -- and print them with new information. this is video from the crash this morning. portsmouth police will confirm the man and woman inside are badly injured. they had to cut them out of the camaro. we went to the impound lot to see what it looks like now. detective misty holley with portsmouth police says they're still investigating what caused the crash. i asked her information...she says except for the victims, she can't talk about what was or

into the el faro sinking. the first of several hearings started today in jacksonville, florida. the discussion focused on the events leading up to the ship's sinking. during the hearing --- the v-p of the company that owned the ship said the day before the ship sank --- the captain of the el faro emailed his superiors asking about changing the route home to a slower one. the v-p says the email was a courtesy --- not evidence that management dictated the ship's route. el faro went down in the atlantic during a hurricane in october. all 33 people on board died, including men from chesapeake and virginia beach. crews found the wreckage in about 15-thousand feet of water near the bahamas. the national transportation safety board announced last week it will begin a new search for the cargo ship's data recorder in april. decision 2016. a new local political poll puts donald trump and hillary clinton in the lead with just two weeks before virginia votes in the super tuesday primaries. the wason center for

evidence sometimes even witnesses who can help crack the case but that's not with here. these are some police maryview medical center in early august. police say 22 year old demetrius white flagged down a car on victory boulevard. the driver took white to maryview where he died from two gun shot wounds. one to leg, the other to his chest. police say even months later they still don't know where the shooting actually took place and unless some leads come in there's no way to make an arrest. "it is very frustrating cause we don't have anything to give the family. we want to try to give the family resolve in the matter and at this

run away from police. an officer pulled out his gun. sanchez eventually gave up. a judge sentenced sanchez to 15 years in prison for the chase. police just released this footage during a ceremony to honor two people who helped troopers when sanchez tried to run. police in california are getting help identifying a home invasion suspect from the suspect himself. that's because detectives say he left his cellphone charging at the scene of the crime. after coming home from work, the victim says he came face-to-face with a stranger holding a gun! the homeowner ran to his bedroom, locked the door and called 9-1-1. (no super) carlos / home invasion victim "looking into his eyes, it's like looking into the eyes of the devil," "even though i got away and got into the room, but for those few seconds, my life flashed before my eyes." once the gunman was gone --- the homeowner came out and saw the suspect's phone charging on the kitchen counter! police say the thief also left behind a

hot-dogs from the victim's fridge to keep the homeowner's pet pitbull from attacking. detectives say the phone is full of selfies. so it won't be long before they track the suspect down. police are investigating why a garbage truck tumbled 100-feet off a highway bridge in miami. the truck was driving off an exit ramp on southbound interstate 95 yesterday when it fell over. the driver has serious injuries. the crash damaged two other vehicles. a nearby park also has damage. investigators are working to figure out why an 18-wheeler hauling oil suddenly exploded. the blast sparked a fire at a texas oil facility. 3 people were hurt. people could see smoke from the fire several miles away. crews let the flames burn out on their own. a teenage basketball player is recovering from a freak accident on the court. the wisconsin teen was partially impaled by a splintered floorboard.

(wavy) - a car crashed in the truxton area of portsmouth tuesday afternoon, after leading police on a short pursuit. it all began around 1:50 p.m. police were doing surveillance on a silver ford focus as part of their search for a suspect with 15 outstanding warrants. officers saw three men get into that vehicle, so they started to follow it, with their lights off at first. they flipped on their emergency lights a little later and tried to pull process. an officer was taken to the hospital. police radioed about the pursuit for assistance. the suspect vehicle drove erratically, police say, portsmouth boulevard, injuring a woman in the car. the male passenger was not hurt. the three men in the suspect vehicle got out of the car and ran. police caught up with two of them, including the fugitive they were originally tracking. they
