finish the expansion from dam neck road to nimmo parkway in october of next year. there's good news for local shipyards and their employees this midday. the navy signed a contract that could be worth about two and a half billion dollars through 20-21. that money could go to three norfolk shipyards including b-a-e systems, which plans to layoff 530 employees in march. the two other yards involved are marine hydraulics and general dynamics. the award won't be enough to stop the layoffs, but it could help workers get jobs in the future. new this midday - the number of people looking for unemployment help dropped last week to the lowest level since november. experts say it's evidence that stock market turmoil and slow growth overseas haven't caused u.s. businesses to cut jobs. the labor department says weekly applications for jobless benefits fell by 7-thousand. a rise in applications last month fueled concerns about greater layoffs. yet those job cuts likely happened among temporary employees

order. now to decision 20-16 news, and the flood of republican presidential candidates expected to visit virginia ahead of our march 1st primary. first on the list - john kasich. he's schedule to be in richmond on monday for a town hall event at virginia commonwealth university. donald trump is expected to speak at regent university next wednesday february 24th. you're looking at video of a town hall he did with m-s-n-b-c yesterday. according to regent's website, trump's visit is so popular there are no more tickets in the auditorium. the university is now giving out tickets so people can watch his speech on television in a different room. ben carson is also headed to regent unversity later this month on february 29th. he was one of several candidates to participate in a town hall last night hosted by c-n-n. ford motor company is touting the pot- hole protection technology on the 20-17 fusion v-six sport sedan. the company says the shock absorber system automatically stiffens

president barack obama is expected to visit cuba next month. the white house plans to make the announcement later today. this will be a big step as the u-s and cuba continue to normalize relations after decades of broken ties. the white house is eager to make progress on building trade and diplomatic ties with cuba, before the president leaves office. earlier this week both nations signed a deal that would restore commerical flights. the last sitting president to visit cuba was calivn coolidge in 1928. before going to cuba - the president and the first lady will visit the supreme court tomorrow. they'll pay respects to the late supreme court justice antonin scalia. the late justice's body will lay in repose friday in the supreme court's great hall. the white house says vice president joe biden and his wife will

scalia died on saturday at the age of 79. he joined the court back in 1986 and was its longest-serving justice. developing news this midday, americans are split as to whether or not the senate should vote for the president's nominee to the supreme court. that's according to a new nbc news-wall street journal poll. the survey found voters are divided along party lines. 43 percent said they wanted the senate to vote this year, while 42 percent wanted to wait for the next president. president barack obama said he would pick a nominee in due time. thousands of active-duty troops suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. and a new study reveals that the military is struggling to provide adequate care for them. the rand corp study reviewed 40-thousand cases and released its results thursday. the group found many of the troops with p-t-s-d and depression are not getting the minimum number of therapy sessions. officials blame it on a lack of mental health professionals... and say the military will turn to civilian

available through pentagon contracts. a couple traveling from south korea is accused of trying to smuggle more than 4 million dollars in fake money into the united states. u-s customs and border patrol offers found the money friday as the couple traveled from vietnam to detroit. according to federal agents, the couple attempted to import the counterfiet bills and vietnamese dong into the u-s and burn it as an offering to the deceased. agents say because the vietnamese couple never tried to spend the money, they were not arrested and allowed to continue on their travels. a fly infestation has an arizona neighborhood buzzing. they're called midge flies and they have overtaken a phoenix neighborhood. despite spraying to kill the tiny flies, they continue to pester homeowners. midge flies live in water, but bloom when the water and weather heat up. some say the problem is so bad they can't go outside at dusk, when the

been arrested in connection to the bombing. just after a bus driver gets all the students of an alabama school bus the bus is caught on camera engulfed in flames. in this dramatic video, shot yesterday, you can see plumes of smoke rising from the burning middle school bus. luckily all 15 students on board and the driver evacuated as soon as the driver noticed smoke coming from the front of the vehicle. a witness in an office nearby noticed the flames and caught it on video. (s/dylan gackley/escaped bus fire:53-1:00) "we all on fire, and then eventually the rest of the bus caught on fire." some question mobile county school's transportation policies, saying the vehicle was picked up from mechanics just hours before it caught fire. fire officials say the fire started in the engine. all new at midday, watch this burglar's entrance.

jacksonville, florida. monday, deputies say he fell through the ceiling of a popeyes restaurant. then he made his way to the safe and after several hours of prying and hitting, he finally got it open and stole the money inside. this morning, he's still on the run.
