a man learned his fate for exposing himself to women. devin parker was found guilty today-- and sentenced to 12 months, but he will only serve two. the rest is suspended. the gloucester sherriff's office says parker went up to three different women in the walmart parking lot on walton directions. deputies say that's when he exposed himself. developing news in a story that could have ended much worse. suffolk police say a three-year-old child got a hold of his parent's gun -- and shot himself. we brought you this story in breaking news last night on wavy news 10 at 11. live outside the hospital, where doctors are treating the child. joe-- how's here to c-h-k-d last night. i'm told he should make a

learned the boy somehow got a hold of that gun and shot himself in the upper shoulder. christina carter/neighbor ((c1 42:50)) "when you looked outside there was nothing but blue lights just lighting up the road." a flurry of police, medics and firefighters put neighbors along jonathans way in suffolk on alert wednesday night. ((c1 51:32)) "i thought that somebody had broken into their house. something had happened, but i had no idea someone was shot, so that was alarming to me." police say they responded to the home here in the applewood farms section of city around 7:30 after receiving reports of a a preliminary investigation reveals the three-year-old boy found the handgun, which was in the home for protection, and accidently shot himself. christina carter lives just a few doors down with two kids of her own. fired. it's unclear where the family kept the gun and where the boy found it. the police department and neighbors hoping this incident will get other gun-owning parent's to think safety first. ((c1 52:23)) "you should definitely make sure your guns are out of reach, locked up, protected, have some kind of trigger guard on them, put the keys up in a different place, always keep your ammunition in a differerent place than your guns that way this kind of tragedy doesn't happen." suffolk police say the investigation into this shooting is still ongoing. i'm told the child's mother could possibly face charges. the suffolk sheriff's office has free gun safety locks as part of their project childsafe program in norfolk, i'm joe fisher, 10 on your side. newport news police are still trying to determine who fired shots at a car this morning on i-64 near harpersville road. two men inside were shot, but they are expected to be okay. 10 on your side's erin kelly joins us now with the latest.

we are working to get more information from state police. it's not clear what led up to the shooting or how many people police are looking for tonight. virginia state police shut down two lanes of 64 early thursday morning to investigate a shooting. police say around 2 am two men were in a car traveling west on i-64 near harpersville road when another vehicle pulled up along side. officers say someone inside that car started shooting at them. troopers at the scene looked at this car -- which appears to be the victims' vehicle. paramedics took both men to riverside hospital for treatment. police have not released any information on the suspects' vehicle. it's not clear if the victims knew the person or people shooting at them. the virginia state police bureau of criminal investigations has been looking into the incident. live in newport news, erin kelly, 10 on your

we have new information about what led newport news police to identify the second suspect, in a double murder. 26-year-old stephen hayes turned himself in, ontuesday. police think hayes and 33-year-old laratio dantzler shot and killed two people, near 14th and wickham avenue last month. court documents show-- an eyewitness picked hayes out of a photo spread. according to the paperwork, a witness said the men tried to rob the after he shot at two officers-- and wouldn't cooperate. he went to the hospital, and was released into police custody. a local cold case murder is moving forward. during a preliminary hearing today in norfolk --- a judge certified 2nd degree murder charges against michael brown to the grand jury. brown is accused of killing angela lechlitner (leck-light-ner) in 2008 at her shafer street home. police arrested brown in goldsboro, north carolina in september. detectives have not said if brown knew lechlitner. we are following developing news

the ocean view section of norfolk. 14 buildings burned on saturday night. eight were destroyed. now the arson dog from hampton's fire department is stepping in to help. the department sent us these pictures of "taylor" and her handler going through the rubble this morning. andy fox was there yesterday, when residents returned for a closer look at the damage-- and to possibly recover some belongings. norfolk fire investigators are also looking into what sparked a fire at a home this morning. someone spotted smoke on chesapeake boulevard and called 9-1-1. the fire department sent 10 on your side this picture of the damage inside the bedroom. no one was home. the home is so badly damaged-- no one can live there right now. all day we've been showing you a way of life in danger of washing away. scientists say a combination of erosion and sea level rise are eating away at tangier island. this is one the last fishing villages left in the chesapeake bay, and a report from the army corps of engineers says its 470 residents could be one of north

gloucester county sheriff's deputies are searching for a bank robber. they sent us these pictures from the langley federal credit union on george washington highway. around four yesterday afternoon --- deputies say this man gave the teller a note demanding cash. once he had the money --- the suspect ran into the farm fresh parking lot, jumped into a car-- and drove off.

new at five -- three people openly admit to taking a dog. but they call themselves heroes not criminals. this happened in january of last year. the animal activists claim they saved the dog from poor living conditions. one of the suspects -- bettina rodriguez -- was in court today.

marks was there. jason there was an unexpected development today? in a case of a stolen dog you need to have someone who owned the dog to begin with. well the alleged owner was in court this morning but never made it to the courthouse-- in the second floor courtroom-- a bizarre twist. 04=2:32 "i've been doing this 30 years and this is the first time that this situation has occurred" the case against a virginia beach woman charge with stealing a dog in january 2015 started like any other. witnesses were sworn and testimony began. bettina rodriguez was charged after investigators say she took the a dog from mathews road. 04=2:40 "it's been 13 months now and i just feel like my life has been in limbo i was ready for some she and her two accomplices took the dog which was tethered to a tree. they

passed off the dog to someone else in exmore who drove it back to virginia beach. when police stopped the uhaul on the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel rodriguez told investigators she never took the dog. the defense argues the pit bull wasn't stolen but rather rescued to save its life. they say the it was malnourished and dehydrated. plus they have questions about who actually owned the dog. the alleged owner was at the courthouse early this morning but disappeared testify. 09=4:55 "it's hard to do any case without the victim." and without the victim, the judge decided to continue the case. 09=5:04 "you have to have the evidence and that would include his testimony" 04=:2:49 "it wasn't that he just didn't show up he was here and it is almost like he fled and he's the victim and i don't think he wants to be here" no one knows why he left. in the meantime, the judge ordered a warrant for his arrest to make when the case resumes. 04=3:02 "hopefully he shows up next month and we can conclude this" just continued the case

before the second of the three defendants is scheduled to be tried. live in accomack county jason marks 10 on your side this isn't the first time a dog was taken from its owner in this area. you may remember maya the chihuahua. we reported her story back in november of 20-14. the family sued peta-- claiming a representative stole the dog and then euthanized her. peta said residents in that area had asked for help with abandoned dogs. the person peta said was responsible for maya's death was fired. a man is recovering after a being hit by construction material in portsmouth. the fire chief says the construction worker was 25 feet in the air --- when he was hit by construction material. it happened at the corner of washington and county streets. crews took the victim to the hospital. we are working to find out how serious his

police in new york city have arrested a man and a tickets to the statue of liberty. according to police, the tourist, an arkansas man, refused a woman's offer to buy fake tickets to the statue of liberty near a ferry. so another alleged ticket hawker unloaded a vicious punch, knocking the 33-year-old man unconscious and fracturing his skull. the suspect was arrested for felony assault charges. the woman was also arrested. the tourist was treated at a hospital and should recover. stay with us. wavy news

sister station k-h-o-n -- the helicopter came to rest upside down in the water. and they dove into to help free the passengers. look for updates on air and online at wavy dot com. norfolk's federal court unsealed details of a massive drug ring in portsmouth. last year, police arrested a number of gang members from the group known as the the corna sto boys. now we know what led police to make arrests. 10 on your side's matt gregory has poured over the newly released documents and has the latest. from these documents we've learned how thousands of dollars in drugs got pumped in hampton roads. the violence associated with the members of the gang known as the corna sto boys. still what's even more disturbing is that a lot of the activity took place across the street from a portsmouth elementary school. beyond the school yard, the sign never deterred anyone... for at least year, most likely more, a drug ring bought and sold heroin and cocaine a stone's throw

neighbors who didn't want to speak on camera say they saw the most activity at this home. which stands at the corner of elm avenue and fillmore street. affidavits unsealed show the mounting evidence against the corna sto boys gang. charles battle stood in court wednesday accused of buying cocaine from a wholsesale supplier in norfolk. then reselling it to members of the gang and on the street. lacharles "boogie" hodges also in court . his role in the conspiracy was to sell crack cocaine on the corner of elm avenue and fillmore street. documents allege hodges and others also distrubted to other dealers in the area. a vast network that investigators put together using confessions from other co-conspirators. but the true light on the case comes from the plea deal by norman stephenson. in those documents, its revealed that he paid lookouts in cocaine to watch for police. he kept a pistol nearby by to protect quote" his block." now a month after the last round of arrests, neighbors said its night and day. the once highly trafficked street, now just like another road in portsmouth. but not normal enough to have
