in a surgical mask. williamsburg police say 18-year-old william hayes robbed a gas station there yesterday. 10 on your side's erin kelly has through court documents. timeline. the york county sheriff says one of his deputies williamsburg robbery and headed that way before tracking down the court paperwork shows investigators have tied 18-year-old william hayes of hampton to six robberies from november to yesterday - five in york county and one in williamsburg. and the documents say hayes all six of them. the first robbery was reported in november at the wilco hess gas station on george washington memorial highway. court paperwork says hayes got more than 5-thousand dollars and came back in january to steal more than 2- thousand. the documents say hayes was wearing a doctor's mask later that month when he allegedly robbed the exxon on big bethel road. and -- that he had on the same type of mask when he robbed the shell gas station on hampton highway in february. it's there that court documents say he shot into a cabinet three times, thinking

military police were called. military police officers arrived and found the off duty virginia beach sergeant in her toyota 4-runner with her two children ages 5 and 2. she was turned over to virginia beach police and charged with dui. prosecutors say her blood alcohol level was at .23. that's more almost three times the legal .08 limit. hobbs bonded out of jail this morning. i can tell you she is a highly respected officer. she's served for 17 years and i spoke with many officers over the last two days who are just shocked that this happened. hobbs was so thought of- when she was decided to become a sergeant, she was number one on the department's list. 18= :2:24 "in 2010 when she was promoted she a very highly qualified officer she was pio as you know. she was an svu as a detective she was a police officer with a great reputation. i never heard a negative thing about margie hobbs in my entire career" :2:35 hobbs was released on a 5 thousand dollar bond. as part of hobbs bond she

car or have any alcohol until her trial date. that's scheduled for april 8th. coming up tonight at 5 you'll more from people who know her best. jason marks 10 on your side. new information since midday in a school bus crash in newport news. 10 on your side viewers sent us pictures from the scene this afternoon at jefferson avenue and oyster point road. police say a car left the scene of an earlier crash, ran a red light and hit the bus. a school spokesperson says there weren't any students on board. there was a driver trainee and instructer on the bus. they weren't hurt. the driver has what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. new information since midday in a short police pursuit through two cities. it started around 1:30 this morning. chesapeake police say they tried to pull over a car at campostella and border roads --- but the driver refused to stop. officers say they chased the car into norfolk, where the driver eventually stopped at kimball terrace and wiley drive. 31-year-old johnathan norfleet faces charges of

with a revoked license. police say he had two outstanding warrants. chesapeake police are searching for the suspect in a hit and run. detectives say this man hit a woman with his pick-up truck back in december at a gas station along bainbridge boulevard --- then drove away. the woman received a minor injury. if you recognize this suspect --- call the crime line. newport news police are investigating what led to a deadly crash. it happened around 1-30 a-m at 41st street and jefferson avenue. police say the driver was not wearing a seatbelt when he crashed into a utility pole. he died at the hospital. new at 4: the isle of wight county sheriff's office says 23-thousand dollars worth of illegal drugs are off the streets. investigators just wrapped up a months long drug operation involving surveillance, undercover operations, and search warrants. it involved issuing 50 indictments on 16 people. they arrested these 14 suspects. the sheriff's office says they were involved in the sale and

crack cocaine and heroin. deputies are still looking for these two suspects --- robert hamlin and paulette spratley. a virginia beach man will spend life in prison for sexually molesting a child. a jury convicted 36-year-old michal mccann in september and recommended the life sentence. a judge formally imposed that sentence today. investigators say mccann paid the child money and gave them lottery tickets to keep the sexual abuse a secret. his sentence is mandatory based on the charge and the age of the victim. new developments involving the murder trial of a former portsmouth police officer. 10 on your side's deanna leblanc will tell you what happened today in the courtroom and what's next in the case. a local hospital is getting a major makeover. we'll tell you about the big changes in the works. but first --- president barack obama's plan to close guantanamo bay. hear his message to

president barack obama says he's sending congress a plan to close guantanamo bay. there are less than a hundred detainees at the facility in cuba. the president wants to ship about 35 of the terror suspects to other countries. the others would move to prisons and military bases here on u-s soil. president obama admits it's a hard sell. announced a 199- million dollar renovation project at norfolk general. the hospital sent us these renderings of what the new facility will look like. the project includes adding three floors to two wings and expanding and modernizing the emergency department. eighteen operating rooms will be expanded and updated. the neonatal intensive care unit will be replaced. construction will start next month. a virginia based chocolate giant is recalling candy bars in 55 countries in europe. mars says plastic was found in one of its products overseas that could lead to choking. the company says the affected bars were produced in the netherlands. right now the recall is only in europe. mars is based in mclean, virginia. now an update on mary lee. she's the great white shark we've been tracking. according to tracker "ocearch" the 16-foot great white was off the coast of ocracoke island this morning. the trial against former portsmouth police officer stephen rankin hit a snag today. a judge granted a motion to delay the start of the murder trial - by five months. 10 on your side's deanna leblanc tweeted the information from court as it happened and is here now with the latest. stephanie - this delay is two part - first because three witnesses for the commonwealth, can't make the march 21st start date. that includes a state police trooper, and an expert witness from the state crime lab. then, with the attorneys' schedules, the new date is now set for august 16th. today was also the day the commonwealth formally argued to limit the number of police officers in uniform. stephanie morales told the judge their presence has an intimidation factor and chilling effect on the jury. she also wants the judge to limit stephen rankin's ability to talk about william chapman's alleged shoplifting. she says the mention of that alleged crime could make the jury believe chapman was violent and could bais

the defense strongly disagreed. saying rankin has to be able to talk about the events of the entire day- not just the moments before the shooting. you just can't sanatize the events. you have to tell the whole story so the jury can have the full picture. the judge did not rule on that motion today - saying he needed time to think about it. tonight at 530- i'll have much more on the motion to limit the police officer presence in the courtroom. and hear what the victim's family thinks of all of this. i'm dl 10 on your side. a plan to replenish beaches in the outer banks won't start as early as expected. town leaders say they want to keep the project within the 43-and-a-half million dollar budget...which means giving contractors more time. but a homeowner contacted 10 on your side...concerned that decision could be disastrous for the shoreline. our lex gray j oins us now from duck. lex -- that homeowner isn't just worried about her house. right, anita and stephanie -- she's worried about every

in duck, kill devil hills, and kitty hawk. those are the three towns that make up the beach renourishment project. gail wall has owned this house in duck since 2009. she says hurricane sandy in 2012 caused serious erosion problems. so wall says she was happy when the towns told them the beaches would be replenished in 2016. but earlier this month -- the towns rejected three bids that came in, because they were all over budget. even the lowest came in about 5-million dollars higher than what the towns can afford. so now -- the project is out to bid again. originally -- the towns wanted to project done by april 20-17 but the town of duck's manager told me -- in order to bring the cost down, contractors will now have until december 2017 to finish. wall is worried about making it through another sandy...or even a big nor'easter. on the phone: gail wall/owns duck oceanfront home if we were to have a large storm of that kind again, our section of duck will be gone. in other words,

overnight and were met with gunfire. no officers were hit. police shot the gunman. a teenaged girl is in custody after eight people were stabbed at a high school in canada. police say six students and two staff members have minor injuries. authorities say school staff tackled the student suspect and held her until police arrived. investigators say it appears to be a random attack. investigators say the 16-year-old who was involved in that sightseeing helicopter crash in hawaii, has died. officials say he died yesterday. he and three of his family members were visiting from canada when this chopper went down in the water near pearl harbor. two family members remain hospitalized in stable condition. a third was treated and released. federal agencies continue to investigate what caused the crash. lawmakers in charlotte, north carolina are allowing people to chose restrooms in private businesses that correspond to the gender they identify with --- not the gender they were born with. city council voted seven to four to expand

"i'm afraid of an opposition who is also afraid of me. they are afraid that i, or people like me, are going to victimize children." north carolina governor pat mccrory has called the law a threat to public safety and warned that the general assembly may step in. a local high school student is fighting to use the bathroom that matches his gender identity. gavin grimm is transgender. gavin was born female --- but identifies as male. he is fighting to use the boy's restroom at gloucster high school. a judge ruled against gavin in september. an appeals court is now considering his case. a virginia house of delegates subcommittee recently killed a bill that would have required students to use the restroom based on their biology. a compromise in state gun laws has gotten final approval from the virginia general assembly. at five-- what this means for gun owners. an airplane scare. why

chesapeake police say 53 year old andre eason was last seen january 25 at his home on hoover avenue. family members say he does not have any medical conditions. and it's not like him to be gone this length of time without talking to someone. 10 on your side's brandi cummings spoke to andre eason's brother today. brandi how is the family handling this? anita, with every passing day, things get harder. the family says they just want to know where andre eason is and what happened. today i met andre eason's three brothers and his nephew. they explained that andre wasn not married and had no children. he didn't drive and spent much of his time with family. they say he was often around the city of chesapeake in one of a few places he frequented. a month ago, they realized that no one had heard from him so they began to search. after several days passed, they called police and made a missing person's report. since then...they haven't heard anything from andre. the family has passed out flyers and gone door to door...even

a commuter train crashed in the netherlands. nats of bell ringing emergency bells rang out even after the train sat in a grassy field, off the tracks. investigators say the train's driver died and 7 passengers were hurt. this happened about 80 miles outside amsterdam. authorities say the train was going full- speed when it crashed. pennsylvania police are investigating an accident that pushed a school bus on its side! there were 6 children and a driver on the bus at the time. four of the kids have minor injuries and should be okay. you can see first responders swarming the scene. it happened around 7:00 this morning as the bus was taking students to school. there was another car involved in the crash, but investigators haven't said how it happened or who was at fault. investigators are trying to find out where all the smoke came from that sent more than 160 people running from an airplane. take a look at this video of the emergency, shot from a runway in japan. you can see

emergency chute to get out of the aircraft officials say the plane filled up with smoke, shortly after it took off. the pilot returned and landed during a snow storm. four passengers had minor injuries when they evacuated the plane. they should be okay. check out this video of a small plane crash in california. as you can, it landed on a busy street in los angeles and damaged several cars in the process. the plane has significant damage to the wings. no one was hurt during the emergency landing, including the pilot, who was the only person on-board the aircraft. a 10-year-old girl is home safe after she fell 10-feet and got covered by snow in california. take a look - you can barely see samatha white's arms. she fell while snow-shoeing on a trail in soda springs. samantha's mom tried to help her daughter, but realized she was sinking deeper and deeper. then her father, a retired firefighter stepped in, but he couldn't get her out either. william white/samantha's dad "this group of 12-15

preoccupied talking on hole about 12-15 feet down... who are you? they said we're marin county search and rescue, and i was like, oh thank goodness." the rescuers used rope to pull the 10- year-old out in a matter of minutes. speaking of rescues, check out this video from florida. two off-duty jacksonville sheriff's deputies saved a giant leather back sea- turtle that got caught in a crab-trap line. officers were about two miles from shore when they spotted the 9-foot turtle in distress. the line was wrapped around the turtle's neck and a buoy was still attached to the trap. every time the turtle tried to dive, it would tighten around its neck. after cutting the line, deputies finally freed it from the turtle, and the

a hampton man is behind bars linked to a string of armed robberies in york county. we reported on the most recent case yesterday, at a valero gas station in williamsburg. court paperwork shows 18-year-old william hayes admitted to six robberies. 10 on your side's erin kelly is looking into this. erin -- the suspect's disguise is a common thread? the sheriff says in several of the cases the suspect was wearing a surgical mask. court paperwork shows -- along with a loaded gun and two wigs, investigators found a surgical mask in hayes' vehicle. investigators say 18-year-old william hayes of hampton is responsible for five robberies in york county and one in williamsburg. and that in several of the cases he wore a surgical

was reported in november at the wilco hess gas station on george washington memorial highway. court paperwork says hayes got more than 5- thousand dollars and came back in january to steal more than 2-thousand. the documents say hayes was wearing a doctor's mask later that month when he allegedly robbed the exxon on big bethel road. and -- that he had on the same type of mask when he robbed the shell gas station on hampton highway in february. it's there that court documents say hayes shot into a cabinet three times, thinking it was a safe, and got away with money and cigarettes. 217 any armed robber with a gun is bad enough, but it becomes exceptionally dangerous when they start discharging a firearm in the course of these robberies 226 deputies say hayes also robbed a kwik out gas station on merrimac trail last week. in all of the york county cases -- court paperwork shows the suspect told the victims to count to 100 before he got away. sheriff j.d. danny diggs says their break happened
