breaking news this midday, police in norfolk detained a teen, after they found a gun inside granby high school. someone told officers a student inside a classroom had a concealed gun. police quickly responded and found the 17-year-old. officers recovered the gun and no one got hurt. investigators say charges are pending. we're working to learn what

new at midday the trial date for a mother accused of killing her son and carrying his body in the trunk of her car has been set. tonya slaton is scheduled to have a four-day jury trial in september. she was in court today for an arraignment on the second degree murder charge. 10 on your side's brandi cummings was there and joins us now live from hampton. this morning's hearing was the first time we've seen tonya slaton since we've began covered this story last year. this was also the first time we've heard from the attorney's who will be involved in the trial. slaton made a first appearance inside a hampton circuit court room on charges of second degree murder in the death of her son quincy davis. virginia state police say troopers found quincy's body in the trunk of slaton's car during a traffic stop last june. online court records show his mother - tonya slaton was indicted for her son's murder on february first. the deputy commonwealth's attorney who is prosecuting the case says they pursued the murder charged after a

she also said the lengthy autopsy report says the cause and manner of death is undetermined. however according to her, it also says the manner of quincy's death was inconsistent with natual causes. but the chief deputy of the hampton public defender's office says that report never says a homicide occurred. lines started a car fire just south of chicago. in new york city, high winds could be to play for flipping this tractor trailer. the overturned big rig delayed traffic for more than hour. forecasters said winds in the area were more than 50 miles an hour. the national weather service says damaging 60 miles an hour wind gusts would likely continue today. tsray in that was the sound of heavy rain falling in our nation's capitol. and you can see a firefighter rescue a woman from the high water. erths storms caused flooding in washington, dc. the storm left thousands of people without power and created strong winds and hail. check this out, there was flooding insidegage at several metro stations. cars had to travel through the high water to get out. a coast guard ship is back upwright after trying to rescue fishermen. the fishing boat ran aground this morning in an inlet off new york city. the crew on board the coast guard vessell and the fish boat both made it ashore safely in queens. five coast guard members actually swam to shore in their protective gear. developing news in the recovery of a deadly plane crash over seas. the weather improved today in nepal. it allowed rescue teams to recver the bodies of those killed in

back to breaking news in norfolk. police are looking for two suspects who robbed a man and took his car on white chapel road. that's just off tidewater drive. police found the car about a block away on pomeroy avenue. and that's where we find 10 on your side's matt gregory. matt what do you know? police respond to morning robbery incident norfolk, va. - norfolk police responded to reports of a robbery that occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m. thursday morning. the preliminary investigation has revealed that three men were inside a vehicle in the 3500 block of white chapel road. two passengers in the car implied a weapon and robbed the driver of personal items. the driver was uninjured

was able to run from the scene. the two suspects initially fled from the area in the victim's vehicle. however, responding officers located the unoccupied car a short distance away. the suspects have been described as a hispanic male and an african-american male in their late teens to early twenties. anyone with any information about this incident is encouraged to contact the norfolk crime line at 1-888-lock-u-up. there is no further information this time. now to our team coverage on the deadly tornado waverly. half an hour ago our jason marks told you about the three victims who died there. the family told him 26-year-old devine stringfield, 50-year-old larry turner, and two-year-old ian lewis were killed by the storm.

visible after all that wind. you see foundation where someone's home used to exist. something we see so often with tornados that's always amazing...here's a neighborhood where one home is destroyed but the house next to it looks to be untouched. and for those whose homes are still in tact look at all the debris they have to clean up. then on to main street where business owners are clearing paths to let people in because of course once the shock wears off everyone has work to do. it's good to know the designation for the strength of the tornado that came through. but whether it's an ef1 or something far greater you can see there's a lot to do to get back to normal. the good thing though is that they're not alone. and we'll be talking about ways that you can help the people there this evening beginning with wavy news 10 at 4. we've just confirmed a representative from the red cross will

live on the air. katie? 10 on your side was in waverly on main street yesterday as the storm blew through. take a listen to what a shop-owner told our jason marks minutes after the tornado passed. well it was, there's no words to express how bad it was, it was getting dark, the wind was blowing so severly it could have been a tornado, did it touch down here? when i saw the debris fall from the building, i realized we must have been in the midst of a tornado, and as you can see, most of the roof is right here on the ground in the middle of main street. actually it was in the middle of main street and they just pushed it off. you said it came out nowhere? i

sky get dark and the next thing i know, the wind just started blowing from, just so much that the debris was just coming everywhere. i saw the flags blowing and i realized that i was in the midst of a torndo. what was that like? hear you are, its blowing straight down mainstreet and what was it like? next thing i know, i ran back into the building, the lights on and off, my heart was beating and i wondered if this was the end for me! bryan reid opened his shop just four weeks ago. he says he hopes to repair the damage and re-open soon. let's check in now with meteorologist jeremy

reponders. later today he'll also see the damage in waverly and tappahannock and meet with crews still working to keep people safe. a u-s aircraft is helping rescue an australian crew stranded at a research station in antartica. it's after an icebreaker ran aground in the antarctic. the plan is for the plane ot move more than 30 people are on board the ice breaker than ran aground. crews will take them from the ship to a nearby research station when the weather gets better. and well. here's another reason to be careful on the roads. a new study found drivers now pay an average of 44 percent more for car insurance after making a single claim of two-thousand dollars or more. insurance-quotes-dot-com found that's up three percentage points more than last
