there's destruction everywhere. governor terry mcauliffe walked the streets, got an up close look at the debris and talked to residents. 10 on your side's jason marks, erin kelly and tom schaad are in waverly right now. we begin our coverage at 4 with jason. tonight we are learning more about the three people who lost their lives in yesterday's storm. there were in mobile home right next that pile of debris and home is just gone. let me show you a closer look at where the home once stood. you can see steps leading to an empty space and the cinder blocks. all that's left is a bed of sand. there 4 people in that home when the storm blew through. 3 of them died. they are 50 year old larry tuner, who was father of three. 26-year-old devine stringfield and his 2- year-old nephew ian lewis. rescue crews found their bodies about 300 yards from where the home once was. we spoke with tuner's mother a short time ago and she remembers coming home and seeing all this

where her son lived. her car. tonya slaton made a first appearance in a hampton courtroom today. the trial on the 2nd degree murder charge she faces is set for late september. after the hearing attorneys on both sides spoke to reporters. 10 on your side's brandi cummings was there. she joins us live courthouse. for the first time today slaton's son, quincy davis. meanwhile tonya slaton's attorney told the media slaton loved her son and the autopsy never said a homicide occurred. slaton faced a judge this morning inside a hampton circuit court room on charges of second degree murder in the death of her son. virginia state police say troopers found quincy's body in the trunk of slaton's car during a traffic stop last june. online court records show slaton was indicted for her son's murder on february first. the deputy commonwealth's attorney who is prosecuting the case says

charged after a 6-month investigation. she also said the lengthy autopsy report says the cause and manner of death is undetermined. however according to her, it also says the manner of quincy's death was inconsistent with natual causes. but the chief deputy of the hampton public defender's office is defending his client. he says that report never says a homicide occurred. sot - richard johnson, defense attorney - clip 12 6:36:02 the criminal justice system, as flawed as it may be, requires proof beyond a reasonable doubt not just speculation. 6:36:11 sot - sheree konstantinou, deputy commonwealth's attorney - clip 11 6:34:02 so obviously there's more to it than meets the eye. this case...which is a standard procedure before any trial. the commonwealth's attorney requested a four-day jury trial. as of now tonya slaton's murder trial is set for september 26 . live in

10 on your side. a new port news police officer is on administrative leave with pay following her arrest. charged with felony destruction of property and family member. police reported she assaulted windows and damaged his property during a fight tuesday night. underwood says her husband assaulted and threatened her. kevin underwood is charged with misdeanor assault. a granby high school student is in custody after officers say they found a gun inside the school. someone told norfolk police and school security a student was inside a classroom with a concealed gun. police quickly responded, found the 17-year-old and recovered the gun. no one was hurt. police say charges are pending. 10 on your side's matt gregory talked to a local city council member fined. hear why he says it's unfair and wrong new information in one of the recent local meth busts. the images from waverly are heartbreaking. and a lot of you want to

virginia who were impacted by a tornado and windstorms that swept through much of the state yesterday. "the virginia region red cross disaster teams sprang into action the moment it was safe to deploy," said reggie gordon, ceo for the american red cross virginia region. "our teams are doing disaster assessments now to identify what the need is from the communities impacted across the state." the red cross provided support at the appomattox county community center shelter last night and deployed an emergency response vehicle to waverly to drop off snacks and water. emergency response vehicles will be in appomattox and sussex counties and waverly today to provide additional water and snacks. disaster assessments continue today in the communities impacted on what the need is. the red cross has disaster mental

after this crash. a virginia beach jury is deciding how to punish a convicted rapist. today jurors convicted benjamin madonia in a 30 year old rape case. now they are deciding his sentence. police arrested madonia in florida back in 2014 . police say the victim was sexually assaulted after accepting a ride home from madonia. a suffolk man is behind bars --- accused of possession of child pornography. james wood faces five counts. police say more charges are likely. detectives are still investigating. a driver faces charges after he hit a norfolk home.

happened because of an article in the virginian pilot. in that he discussed the areas trash authority and upcoming bids. 3 members of the council and the mayor claimed he discussed issues from a closed session in early february. meeks says that accusation is false. most of all because that information he shared with the paper he had in january. 10 on your side has video of both he and the mayor discussing the same subject and details in january. in a public meeting. meeks claims the mayor and councilmen whitaker, cherry, and edmonds voted to fine him without the entire council present. councilman meeks is out of town today, but he had this to say about what he plans to do next. matt phoner2 "i would base my opinion off of what i'm being directed by my outside council versus the city attorney." coming up at 5:30, find out what the mayor and the other council members had to say when i asked them about fining meeks. in the news room matt gregory 10 on your side. norfolk police are investigating a robbery

lockdowns this morning. detectives say two passengers in a car on white chapel road robbed the driver. the victim wasn't hurt and ran from the scene. the suspects took off in the driver's car but later abandoned it. schools in the area went under lockdown as a precaution while suspects. police haven't found them. new at 4. an unusual investigation in virginia beach. marine patrol is looking for information about an abandoned boat. this sailboat was found sinking in the marina at the lynnhaven boat ramp back on february 6th. police say the boat appeared to be smoking in the water as five teenagers stood in and around it. once the boat started sinking --- the teens jumped into a truck with a trailer attached and drove off. investigators say it appears their goal was to sink the boat. the keel and mast were cut off and their were holes in the boat. police need help identifying the teens and the boat's owner. if you have any information --- call the crime line. this year it'll cost more for employees to park in the resort city. city officials say its part of a short term

oceanfront gets crowded. parking became a problem at the oceanfront years ago. the city made employees parking in residential areas get parking permits. this year the city again raised the price on those from 25 dollars a year to 20 dollars a month. the head of the resort beach civic league says she thinks it will make people more responsible when they park near her home. but she wants to see a permanent solution to the parking problems. barbara clark / resort the lake, the pier project that's proposed and the dome site once that's developed. so they are going to have their own parking needs for employees and visitors." coming up at 5 --- hear from the city's resort management about the parking problems. breaking news on the campaign trail hillary clinton is coming to hampton roads. clinton's campaign says she's be in our area as well as make a stop in northern virginia - on monday. this just ahead of the march 1st primary.

the vaccine is working. good news about this year's flu vaccine. the centers for disease control says people who have gotten the vaccine are 59-percent less likely to get the flu than those who have not been vaccinated. that's far better than last year when flu strains mutated. the 2015 vaccine was only 23-percent effective.

their families members. we spent the past month digging into the gang problem in our region. in newport news alone -- there's 44 known gangs and more than one- thousand gang members. police say a lot of these gangs are smaller, homegrown gangs with as few as three members. others have 70 or more members. increasingly, recruitment for these gangs happens online on social media sites, that's why police say prevention needs to start earlier --- and parents need to watch for warning signs. ((40:53)) "many of the gangs are already talking with children in elementary school trying to entice them." tonight at six o'clock -- you'll hear more from not only police -- but a gang detective and a local student who sees the pressures kids are under at school each day. i asked that student why his peers are involved in gangs. that answer might surprise you. we'll also have a city-by-city breakdown of how many gangs are living in your city. and warning signs parents need to know. our report - "recruitng starts young" -- airs tonight on wavy news 10 at six o'clock. you're not going to want to miss it. i'm joe fisher, 10 on your side. 12 people are safe and not injured after a coast guard boat capsized while responding to a fishing boat that ran aground. it happened this morning in rockaway beach --- an inlet off new york city. 10 foot waves from an overnight storm hit the 25-foot coast guard boat. the five coast guard members wearing protective gear swam to shore. a helicopter with a rescue basket lifted the seven fisherman to safety. the 76-foot fishing boat the carolina queen three started taking on water around two a-m. the crew

control when the boat ran aground. now to video of winter weather. parts of the midwest are digging out from more than a foot of snow. take a look at the merrillville. snow buried everything in sight --- including cars. firefighters rescued people stranded in their cars --- as the snow blew around them. the same situation in nearby crown point, indiana. more drivers were stranded for hours. there were big travel troubles when a semi-truck jacknifed and live wires fell on the road. firefighters say it was some of the worst winter conditions they've seen. check out this video from crete, illinois --- south of chicago. strong winds and heavy snow brought down a powerline. you can see it on fire in the street. police report a lot of crashes --- including this jacknifed tractor trailer. now to the severe weather in other parts of the country. this is the damage in lancaster county, pennsylvania outside

service confirmed a tornado touched down here. firefighters responded to reports of collapsed homes, toppled trees and downed power lines. dozens of homes have damage. roofs are gone, debris is lodged in trees, trees are stripped of their branches. emergency crews say no deaths or injuries are reported mainly because residents sought shelter during the tornado warning. now to new york where a strong line of thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts blew through. a downed power line landed on a car and caused it to catch fire. firefighters eventually put out the flames. no one was hurt. high winds are likely to blame for this. a tractor trailer flipped on its side on the george washington bridge in new york city. the overturned truck delayed traffic for more than an hour. more storm damage --- this video is from granville county, north carolina. some homes are damaged --- others destroyed. there's also damage on farms. the national weather service confirmed that a tornado touched down here. strong storms caused flooding in the washington, dc area.

three a-m. the cause is unknown. crews are battling the flames. calm winds are helping their fight. some residents have left their homes as a precaution. authorities blame an underground fire for a pair of manhole cover explosions in new jersey. both flew into the air yesterday morning --- about a block apart. rain carried road salt from the pavement to underground power lines and sparked fires. a carbon monoxide build-up created pressure that caused the manhole covers to explode. one landed very close to a deputy fire chief. tom-- state police say 2-year-old other, larry tuner's girlfriend amazingly survived. she was in the home. we're told she is still in the hospital. she is still in the hospital. virginia governor terry mcauliffe declared a state of emergency in the wake of the deadly storms. today he toured the affected areas to survey the damage. mcauliffe was in appomattox county. that's where a fourth person was killed after his home was destroyed by a tornado. seven other people were injured there. he also visited essex county and here in
