a line of severe storms ripped through the area wednesday, bringing widespread damage to the region. today, communities across the commonwealth are looking to pick up the pieces from last night's devastating weather. initial reports from the storms indicated that total of four people were killed across the state. addressing the media thursday, virginia gov. terry mcauliffe says a fifth death may have been storm- related. he told members of the media the fifth death was a drowning. officials say the death is unconfirmed, but that there have been reports the victim drowned in the

mcauliffe made visited three areas affected by the storms nws storm survey concluded that a tornado occurred near waverly va. the tornado began a few miles south- southwest of waverly...moving fast through the town of waverly...and ending about five miles north- northeast of waverly. max operation blessing sent a small team from their disaster relief crew out this morning, mostly to offer emotional support to those who have lost loved

earlier we showed you the video only chopper ten can give you -- an aeriel view of tornado damage in waverly -- now we have a unique -- side by side comparison -- the storm also brought damage to other parts of our state. this is video from appomattox county where a fourth person was killed. a 78 year old man died when his home was

tornado. officials report about a hundred buildings were damaged. one man who has lived in the area for fifty years told our sister station -- w-s- l-s -- he has never seen anything like this in his entire life. governor terry mcaullife was in appomattox county earlier today -- he said they were prepared for the storms and moved resources as quickly as they could. gov. mcauliffe 12:09:15 in: we knew where these potential tornadoes were going to touch down out: it was really incredible to look at that and see what was happening. 12:09:32 governor mccaullife says after he's been able to make a full assessment of the damage the state will be able to ask the federal government for the help it needs. by wednesday afternoon the red cross was already headed to waverly to offer support to first responders and residents impacted by the storm. red cross volunteers set up emergency shelters in

council issue in public. meeks says the fine is unfair and he denies all of it. he spoke with 10 on your side's matt gregory today. he joins us from the news room. meeks says this fine hit him after an article in the virginian pilot. in the article meeks discusses the state of portsmouth, and the region's, trash authority. next closed meeting he found a letter from the mayor and 3 councilmembers fining him. 10:39:57 "they fined me $1500, they said i took information that we got at a closed session and i gave it to the newspaper." 10:40:06 over the phone you can still hear how shocked and angered danny meeks feels over the fine, but he claims the information in the virginian pilot article, has already been discussed well before the closed session meeting. 10:40:59 "they said i took the information then when really i already had the information but i didnt have it timestamped and long or any trail because i had it before

the coast guard was called in to help a fishing vessel out of york county -- after it ran into trouble off the coast of new york. it happened in the overnight hours -- near east rock-away inlet. the 74-foot carolina queen ran aground and started taking on water.

seven people from the fishing boat. then -- one of the coast guard's rescue boats overturned in the water. five coast guard members onboard that boat were all able to swim to shore. we have some new information on a story we happened to the u-s-s milwaukee when it lost propulsion about 40 miles off the coast. navy officials says - the ship is designed to operate with gas turbine and diesel engines. they can operate in tandem or independently. there was a problem when switching from one to the other -- causing damage to some of the clutch gears. the damage was repaired. the navy has not said how much it cost to make those repairs. the milwaukee just made a trip to mayport florida -- on its way to its home port in san diego. coming up on wavy news ten at five- thirty - our coverage continues of the storm damage across our state. where national guard troops have been called to help? then a little later - no help from honda. why takata is being forced to

massive airbag recall. our coverage continues now at five-thirty -- with more on the severe storm that swept through virginia last night. we know at least one tornado hit the town of tapphannock in essex county. no deaths have been reported -- but we know at least 25 people were injured. some of those injuries were serious. authorities say as far as they know -- everyone has been accounted for. the newport news fire department sent its haz-mat team to to help. also helping with clean up efforts in essex county -- members of the virginia national guard. more than forty soldiers are now on state active duty. soldiers assigned to the powhatan-based 180th engineer company, 276th engineer battalion, 91st troop command -- spent the day working to clear fallen trees and other debris.

ten on your side with new claims takata tried to cover up its exploding air bag issue. a new report just released by the senate committe on science, commerce and transportation -- shows company officials presented falsified test data -- to honda -- it's largest customer. information on airbag inflator quality and testing was manipulated to hide

the falsified information came to light during a review of internal documents from takata covering the past twelve years. in a statement responding to the report - takata said the issues it revealed "are entirely inexcusable and will not be tolerated or repeated." this latest news comes right on the heels of honda announcing it will not be bailing out the troubled airbag manufacturer. takata has been trying to get carmakers to split the costs of some 50 million air bag recalls worldwide. its faulty inflators have been blamed for at least ten deaths -- and more than a hundred injuries scientists determined that multiple factors - including moisture and high humidity - can cause some takata air bags to inflate with too much force and hurl shrapnel at drivers and passengers. the government fined takata 70 million dollars for not promptly disclosing the defect. coming up on wavy news ten at five- thirty - a woman's dog ends up in icy waters -- and she went in after him. the icy rescue -- next. then at 6-- much more to

cleanup efforts-- they're dealing with a different kind of severe weather in other parts of to be rescued from the frigid water of superior bay in minnesota. water temps were around 32 degrees when the woman's dog fell in. she tried to pull him out -- but she fell in too. she was stuck in

local crew on the scene. jason, you talked to people who were awestruck by what happened and you talk to the families of those killed in the mobile home. you have quite a story to tell. jason: you got to waverly and you heard the sound of heavy machinery. you heard chainsaws. people were cleaning up. even the people were focusing on cleaning up all of the debris, they could not help but remember the three people who lost their lives yesterday. supported by family, janice jones still cannot believe her son larry is gone. >> i am going to miss him. miss him. to be without larry. jason: 50-year-old air return her, father of four -- 50-year-old larry turner, father
