>> it was way up in the air. you could see it turning. it was up in the air. it was turning. jason: turner's cousin had no idea of the tornado was headed for his cousin from mobile home. turner was in the home with his 30-year-old girlfriend, her two-year-old son, and to his uncle. turner's girlfriend was the only survivor. today was not only a day of cleaning up, but grieving. deeply. jason: the community will now have to lean on each other for support, knowing brighter days are around the corner. >> [indiscernible] jason: amazing when you look at mobile home. it is gone.

goes out to those who have lost loved ones. already the damages in the millions. >> flying in the helicopter, you can see for miles and miles. erin: the images from chopper 10 show the devastation caused by hr tornado that hit waverly wednesday. on thursday, governor terry mcauliffe met with victims and tour the area where three people died. >> there was a gentleman that a truck fell on top of just up ahead of us. erin: the man in the truck was william brown, who tried to get ahead of the storm. >> it hit me from the back. i did not see it. i could not get out. i finally wedged my way out and i did not know where to go. i went across the street. erin: across the street, reminders of the life the family had from before the storm. >> we saw the devastation.

it's hard to imagine what people went through when the storm was going on last night. erin: we felt the same way, tom, hard to imagine what people went through. the road was blocked. it will take next week, this week, and the state will have 30 days to apply for federal help. that is what the governor said. everyone else will be continuing to tom: clean up. the shot seems to be wearing mode. along with the go. we will hear more later on in this newscast. until then, let's go back to my coanchor nicole livas and chief studio. guys? nicole: amazing images. we were on the air at this time last night you're it we did not have the details about the storm. but when the weather service

charges. her husband says that she assaulted him. officer underwood says her husband assaulted and threatened her. at kevin underwood has been charged with misdemeanor assault. tonya slaton was indicted for murder earlier this month. state troopers found quincy davis's body in the truck of her car during a traffic stop on i-64 last june. her son had been missing for years. his cause of death was undetermined, but prosecutors say the manner of death does not appear to be natural. a grandson school -- a grandson school student in custody. they found a 17-year-old and a weapon. charges are pending. next up at 6:00 -- a dangerous

joe: it's all they have. if you are in a gang, you feel like they support you. fear, p pressure, family ties -- all reasons that -- p pressure, family ties -- all reasons that kids get involved in gangs. >> you are going to get shot at. joe: suspects can usually be tied to a gang if there is crime in his city. there are 44 known gangs, more than 1000 gang members. >> sometimes they just like the thrill, the rush of the crime. you go out, you still a car, you have this thrill, and the chances of getting caught is slim. joe: thehollis he on the streets often makes it difficult for

snitching policy on the streets often makes it difficult for investigators to crack cases. it's not just crime, but computer crime, too. that includes recruiting members through social media. >> the risk of violence is far less if you are stealing identity and working on the computer as opposed to sticking a gun in somebody's ribs. joe: if you think gangs are isolated to newport news, think again. 10 on your side learned there are 25 gangs in norfolk, 21 in portsmouth and chesapeake, and each ranges from three gang members to 70 or more. >> we have to get to them before they become a statistic. joe: intervention coordinator

newport news spends roughly $1.1 million on gang prevention each year. >> if you do not know you can be better, you walk around thinking this is all life has to offer me and it's not. joe: the youth and gang prevention office aims to get young adults involved in positive activities. teens are at risk, observing crimes like -- >> talk to their friends. talk to their friends' parents. be involved in the life of your child. joe: the cycle can stop, she says. it's about education and kids learning not only from adults, but their peers. >> in all honesty -- [indiscernible]

it has worked its way up in northern new england now. there is colder air now. you can see it is all off to the north. you see it moving toward new england. you see the swirl of the weather pattern. it's in upstate new york. wind is indicated by clouds. the storms moved through last night, about 23 hours ago, and today during the day, you see all of this ripley affect and the cloud cover. those are the storms last night. those are gone now. what is left? kind of ripples in the cloud cover. that is because the wind -- the wind hits the mountains and kind of goes like that and creates the clouds we've seen during the day today. the wind is going to drop off during the overnight hours, 10 to 15 miles per hour. occasionally it will pop up to 20, 25 miles per hour,

i think you will likely see winds continue. and then they will drop off totally. it will be a little breezy at times. and then tomorrow night, the winds should drop off saturday morning. saturday will be even cooler. look at that. definitely cooler for the day on saturday. it will warm up after that. we will see the beginnings of that saturday. beautiful cloud patterns during the latter part of the day, clouds of cloud cover. lots of clouds. then we see them break on up in the beautiful, beautiful sunset. temperatures in the 50's and they will drop on down overnight. still on the breezy side.

what is next for the tightknit community? who you ask. everyone has been affected differently. workplaces are silent as people get ready to continue cleanup efforts on the next day, of the fact remains three people lost their lives in this tragedy, and in a small town of 23 hundred, that's a huge price to pay. of course, there is hope. $11 million of damage was done in waverly. the governor will be asking for federal help to come in and get the town back on its feet, but it will be the residents themselves that will pick up the pieces as they continue to clean up from this disaster yesterday afternoon. our coverage continues on wavy-tv 10, fox 43, and here again at 11:00.

took devastating blows of a violent and deadly storm that rampaged from the south up the eastern seaboard. today we're seeing the full extent of the damage from some 50 reported tornadoes over the last two days. nine people were killed. and millions were impacted from downed trees and power outages, to floods and canceled flights. tonight the region is still trying to recover. nbc's miguel almaguer reports. >> reporter: tonight this is what the damage looked like in seven states. homes have been shredded, lives are in shambles, after more than 50 reported tornadoes. the house was, it wasn't there. >> reporter: in waverly, virginia, there's as much heart break as destruction. in the f-1 tornado with winds up to 110 miles an hour, carving a path nine miles yard and 300 yards wide. this foundation, all bull's-eye. the bodies of two adults and a toddler
