a road. and - a rare compromise - state lawmakers and the governor come to an agreement on gun laws. we start wavy news 10 at 6 with developing news from newport news. firefighters continue to keep an eye on a house that caught fire this afternoon. the calls came in to 9-1-1 from corinthia drive just before 1:45 this afternoon. thanks for joining us - i'm deanna leblanc. we know two people were home at the time of the fire. 10 on your side's matt gregory is at the scene - to let us know how bad the fire was and what it means for the family who lives there. matt? deanna, one of the newport news battalion chiefs tells me the house behind me is condemned. it could have been worse, but everyone inside the home made it out safely. sometime after 1:30 is when the fire department says this fire started, it looks like initally

a 39-year-old hampton man is in the hospital after this morning. we've learned the shooting happened just before 2 this morning at ponderosa on jefferson avenue in newport news. police say the victim was talking to his friends happened. officers are looking to see if the shooting is random. police continue to investigate a second shooting in newport news. this one happened on 25th street just before 12:30 this afternoon. we've learned a 19-year-old man is recovering after being shot twice in his right leg. he went to the hospital - but is expected to live. if you have information about either of the shootings - call the crime line. a suspicious package shuts down part of north military highway at ring road this afternoon. around 12:30 norfolk police, firefighters and the bomb squad shut down the road as they tried to figure out what the device is. you can see it's this big black box - officers say may have fallen out of a vehicle. police sent out an update just after 4 saying the area is safe - and they re-opened north military highway.

governor mcauliffe also signed a gun compromise bill into law. the legislation is a result of a compromise between repulicans and democrats in the state house. the new law will allow more out-of- state permit holders to legally carry guns in the commonwealth. it also changes voluntary background checks at gun shows. the governor calls it a "new era" in virginia, that'll make people safer. still ahead - twister tally - we'll tell you the number of tornadoes to hit the

in the u.s. - there have been more than 100 cases of the zika virus reported. that's why governor terry mcauliffe is creating a statewide task force to fight the virus. the group will work with local officials on mosquito surveillance and control programs - prior to the beginning of mosquito season. virginia has three reported cases of the virus - while north carolina doesn't have any. florida has the highest number of cases reported at 28. we have a 10 time saver traffic alert to tell you about this evening. interstate 264 is moving a little more smoothly at this hour. three separate accidents between independence and lynnhaven blocked the interstate in virginia beach this afternoon. eyewitnesses say a flipped over 18- wheeler caused a big part of the backup. the road re-opened within the last 30 minutes. vdot says the shoulder is boulevard. veterans waiting for access to health care from the hampton v-a got an opportunity for help the hampton location joined v-a hopspitals accross the country hoping to cut back on hours this morning.
