continuing our team coverage -- let's check in with how voting is going on the peninsula. 10 on your side's liz palka is live in newport news. liz, we have been on the lookout for reports of polling problems throughout the area. so far no reports of any major issues. is voting going smoothly where you are? it is, nicole. we are here at saunders elementary school in newport news. that's off of harpersville road. the precinct chief tells me they haven't had any problems. i just poked my head in the door. there were told me this is one of the busier precincts in the city. this is what the saunders polling location looked like about two hours ago. definitely fewers voters before the work day ended. precinct chief ken mallory said there has

told investigators he put this rope around the cat's neck. page held pirate down as gerarden pulled until the cat took it's last breath. they told a neighbor about the crime right after it happened. 03=:1:20:28 "apparently he was holding it down to remove a tick off of it him and page and the cat bit him and that's what caused it" pirates had a locator microchip so investigators were able to find the dead cat in the woods right outside its owners apartment complex. gerarden told put an animal down. today he had to come face to abusing animals is bars. the first step yeah i think he did i'm

next trial but yeah i think he did i'm proud that he got it" we won't know gerarden's punishment until he is sentenced. that is scheduled in may. in two weeks page will be back in court for his trial on the same charge. jason marks 10 on your side. we are following developing news in virginia beach. a crash this between a car and an e-m-s vehicle took the life of an 88-year-old woman. vehicle was traveling south on lynnhaven parkway when a car northbound made a left hand turn onto north mall drive. the e-m-s vehicle hit the car. the passenger in the car --- doris baxter died. the driver of the car also went to the hospital. the brigade chief who was driving the other vehicle is on administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation. e-m-s was not responding to a call at the time of the crash. another crash involving

one in newport news. police sent us these pictures. investigators say the truck driver merged onto warwick boulevard from mercury-- and turned into the ambulance's lane. that driver is charged with reckless driving. the patient and the medics inside were treated and released from the hospital. the truck driver was not hurt. portsmouth police are investigating car break-ins at a hotel parking garage. dispatchers tell us they happened overnight at the renaissance garage on water street in olde towne. we're working to find out how many vehicles were broken into-- and the extent of the damage. we'll let you suspect information. new sales taxes in north carolina take effect today. the taxes are on car repairs, jewelry repairs, floor installation and businesses have always charged sales tax on goods or parts-- but not labor. this comes from a republican push to reduce north carolina's reliance on income tax. combined state and local taxes will amount to around 7 percent on the transactions -- but the rate will vary by county. opponents have said the expanded sales tax will hurt families

virginia veterans can attend free legal clinics this week. attorney general mark herring came to chesapeake for the first of four regional clinics. more than 100 veterans and their spouses have

the family of a man killed by a norfolk police officer just filed a multi-million- dollar lawsuit. officer michael edington jr. is charged with voluntary manslaughter in the death of david latham. this happened two years ago. 10 on your side's deanna leblanc is looking into this new development. edington for nine million dollars. this, is on top of the criminal charge he's already facing in david latham's death. david latham's family maintains - they called police for help in june of 2014. they say the 35-year-old was having a mental episode - and they wanted an ambulance to take him to the hospital. when 25-year-old officer michael edington showed up - latham had a knife. edington, who had never used his gun on duty, shot latham in the doorway of the home. medical paperwork says he was shot 8 times - twice death.

suit - they total their damages at nine million dollars . (page 2 paragraph 5) the family alleges that despite having a knife, latham never acted aggressively toward edington (page 3 paragarphy 8) and that the "excessive and unreasonable use of deadly force ... was the result of ... recklesness. though it hasn't been made clear who will represent edington in this new lawsuit - jeff swartz who represents edington in the criminal case gave us this statement. it reads in part: "officer edington was faced with a life threatening situation in which he was confronted by a man weighing over 270 pounds diagnosed with a serious mental illness waving a foot long knife... he had to make a split second decision when mr. latham refused to put the knife down even though three officers were ordering him to drop the knife." court papers show the other officers did not fire their weapons. the first hearing regarding the lawsuit is set for late may - and the criminal trial should begin in september. for all of our extensive, previous coverage on this story - head to wavy dot com.

the zika virus as they look forward to their sport debuting at the rio olympics this year. the women's world number one golfer lydia ko and south korea's inbee park, who sits second in the rankings, spoke today about their thoughts on the virus outbreak at a media event in singapore. pulling out they said is not an option right now -- but they are monitoring the situation. s/ inbee park/ golf me, i have to get pregnant in a couple or three years so yeah definitely in concern but i don't know that would be the reason why i shouldn't go." the virus has been linked in brazil to more than four-thousand suspected cases of microcephaly--a rare condition that causes abnormally small heads in infants and can lead to developmental problems. the world health organization declared the zika outbreak a global emergency. but the

a group of international journalists on a press tour came under shelling in northern syria. the tour was organized by russia's ministry of defense. reporters were walking across the village and speaking to locals when the first shell struck a hillside a few hundred feet away . a russian armored vehicle pushed forward to shield the reporters. eight shells landed about

with dolls when she decided to give dolls to little girls who are less fortunate 11:35 now at five-thirty - a firefighter is recovering tonight -- after falling through the roof of a burning building. it's a situation that could have been much worse. ten on your side's lex gray is live in newport news with the details. anita and stephanie -- you can only imagine how terrifying it must have been for that firefighter as he felt the roof give out. i talked to another firefighter who saw it happened, and helped pull him out. pkg (20) 14:50 there was a lot of shouting (butted to) :57 i could tell something bad happened. steven smith had been watching newport news firefighters work on the roof of this church building as it burned. he went back inside, flipped on his scanner -- (20) 14:30 that's when i heard the firefighter down call. rotting -- and their equipment adds a lot of extra

one of his guys suddenly fall through the roof up to his waist - and he and the other firefighters dropped everything. 35:51 you don't even think about it, you just start working. your hands go into motion. you know one of your guys is right there. you don't think about your safety, you don't think about anything but getting that guy out of there. they did get him out, within seconds...but it could have been much worse. 36:16 there was still some hot spots that were burning inside there, still a lot of smoke coming out of there. sanzo says that's a risk they take every time they have to get up on a roof. 34:00 pretty much we get up there, get a hole in there. we don't like to spend a lot of time up there. :05 the firefighter went to the hospital to get checked out, but he wasn't hurt. investigators say the fire was an accident that started with a faulty heater. live in newport news, lex gray, 10 on your side. it's decision day for virginia voters. people across hampton roads have been heading to the polls all day.
