nicole: a 30-year-old rape trial was supposed to start today in accomack county. tom: it was delayed, making the situation more difficult for the victim. the defendant appeared today in a wheelchair and represented himself. his stepdaughter has identified herself as the victim. stacy johnson says the suspect sexually assaulted her for years. after two hours of motions and witness discussion today, the judge said the case was getting out of hand. >> i was relieved to get in your today. -- in here today. things started to get underway. as soon as the judge started talking after he came back from a break, i didn't need to sit through the whole thing.

tom: a young woman whose family and friends say had a very bright future, a star athlete, college freshman, a loving daughter, sister, and friend. nicole: today marks one year since anjelica hadsell vanished. she was later found dead. what happened during her final moments remains a mystery. tom: joe fisher has covered the case from the start. joe: this is a missing persons case that turned into a death investigation, an investigation with no concessions, no charges, no suspect. march 2, 2015. that is the last time anyone saw aj hadsell alive. 38 days later and more than 50 miles away, investigators found the 18-year-old's remains behind

>> b safe. joe: her adoptive father was arrested. he had in -- been in several interviews from jail that say he found a keys -- a key piece of evidence. >> you had nothing to do with the disappearance? >> i am 100% confident. joe: weeks went on with counsel -- countless searches. then, an unthinkable discovery. the family says it has been 38 days of pain. today, what could be a major break in the case. the next day, april 10, the medical examiner positively identified the remains found anjelica hadsell. in june, we learned she died of heroine poisoning. how she died was undetermined. all.

>> the big unknown is, was she murdered? joe: an attorney represented wesley hadsell. his hotel room was searched and he was arrested for possession of ammunition. jennifer hadsell says she kicked wesley out of the house a week before aj disappeared or using drugs. >> du believe he did it? >> i believe a lot of different things. until the evidence is brought to me and until the charges are out there, i will go from there. joe: gps coordinates from haskell's -- hadsell's home puts him for -- feet from where her body was found. >> no one what happened -- knows what happened in the house. joe: releasing details now would compromise the investigation. >> we can't show our cards to the public.
