ballot. voters in virginia could see the question, "should city council of virginia beach spend local funds to extend light rail from noroflk to town center in virginia beach?" atkinson says he's going to file the paper work soon. new at midday, police in construction workers helped catch a burglary suspect. officers arrested 18-year-old tyrell slaughter yesterday morning. investigators say a construction crew arrived at a house they were working on along chimney creek drive, and found the suspect inside. the workers chased slaughter and held him until police arrived. he's currently in jail without bond, charged larceny. new at midday, we're looking into an accident involving a chesapeake police car. officers tell us paramedics took both the officer and a passenger in another vehicle to the hosptial. they are expected to be okay. the crash happened earlier this morning on moses grandy trail and millville road. police say the officer was not responding to a call when the crash happened. we're working

caused the accident and if any charges will be filed. this midday, we're working to find out more information from currituck county fire officials about this fire from last night. witnesses sent us this video and told 10 on your side a barn or garage caught fire on caratoke highway near south currituck road. that's near the town of maple. we'll let you know when we get more details. norfolk police are trying to solve a undetermined death in ocean view. detectives say they got a call around 7:00 last night to a home on west ocean view avenue on willoughby spit. the call came in for someone who needed medical attention. a police spokesman says they're making sure there's no foul play involved. we'll update more. officers in norfolk are looking for one man who driver overnight. officers say it happened around 1:00 this morning on picadilly street. that's off norview avenue and north military highway. the victim told police a man approached him

the driver was not hurt. call the crime line if you have any details. police in newport news are looking into two shootings overnight. investigators say the first happened around 12:30 this morning on jefferson avene near langley avenue. that's just north of harpersville road. police say someone shot a 50-year-old man in the thigh. paramedics took him to the hospital. he should recover. the victim told police he was outside, heard gunshots in the area, and then a bullet hit him in the leg. a few minutes later, 34-year-old man, walked into riverside regional say someone shot him several times in the chest and stomach. he's in critical condition this morning. police say the two shootings are related. call the crime anything. heads up if you live on the outer banks, put march 8th on your calendar! north carolina governor pat mccrory just announced the date for the groundbreaking of the new bonner bridge.

ceremony on the south side of the bridge, tuesday at 10:00 in the morning. these are pictures of the bonner bridge being built more than 50 years ago. a lot of folks are excited about the new span. for years, 10 on your side has covered the battle between environmentalists and residents to build a new bridge connecting hatteras island with the rest of the outer banks. the current bonner bridge is 52 years-old, and was designed to only last 30 years. n-c-d-o-t says the new bridge will be finished by 20-18 and the old bridge will be demolished in 20-19. today there's a career fair designed to help young people get jobs. the youth career center of hampton roads will host an event tonight. it's free for people ages 16 to 24 to get a leg up on jobs and volunteer opportunities. more than 50 companies and agencies will be on hand. just head to pembroke mall in virginia beach between 5 and 7 tonight. right now the trial is underway for a woman accused of stealing

of dollars from her employer. chesapeake police say mandi flowers worked for people's auction company until her bosses fired her in 2015. the owner says she changed the books to hide the thefts. flowers attorney told us, she's done nothing wrong. look for what happens in court later today starting on wavy news 10 at 4. new at midday, we have a follow-up to a train derailment in lynchburg. remember when three oil tankers crashed into the james river, sparking a fire? a federal report found a broken rail was likely to blame for the derailment almost two years ago. no one got hurt, but the cars dumped almost 30-thousand gallons of crude oil into the river. now to a follow-up involving a deadly suspected hit and run on the eastern shore. state police say last year a tour bus hit and killed brice sauver along route 13 infront of the perdue factory. today we obtained a lawsuit filed by sauver's family. they're

it's been more than a week since a deadly torando ripped through the town of waverly. the cleanup process has been underway for a few days now. the streets - once covered in debris, are now clear-- as crews pick up the last of the damage. while many are beginning to rebuild - one business owner tells us: the process with insurance will be lengthy. the crime was all caught on video. check this out. a pick-up truck yanked the doors off of a gun store in houston and a group of thieves went inside. you can see the suspects then smashed display cases and stole handguns and rifles. police say the crooks got away with more than 50 guns. investigators are offering a five thousand dollar reward for information leading to arrests. this midday a police horse is back with the force after getting spooked in new york city. officers say a lound noise scared the police horse named "gunny." he threw the mounted officer and ran through times square during rush hour yesterday. officers found him at a nearby parking garage where the mounted police usually hang out during their breaks. the police officer who was riding gunny went to the hospital and is expected to recover. as for the horse, he's doing okay, but damaged three cars during his escape. puppies, puppies everywhere! the owners

retrievers in north carolina may have set a state record after their dogs had a liter of 17 puppies! the owners couldn't believe how many new dogs suddenly multiplied in their kinston home. so they started researching to see if they broke the record. turns out, the world record for lab puppies is 19. the state record in north carolina is 16. :28 - 52 runs 24 seconds s/lina emory/dog owner "i've never heard of any labs having a litter that size so i knew it had to be a little bit rare or uncommon, i started googling and i guess the record for akc registered labs..the world record for litter size is 19. and wow we came pretty close and guess the state record is about 16, so not bad for their first time (laughs)" the owners say the plan to keep at least one puppy, but will sell the rest to good homes across north carolina.

life in prison. he took a plea deal which helped him avoid the death penalty. matthew will serve four consecutive life sentences. a follow-up now to that deadly marina fire in middlesex county monday. state police say the victims are 75-year- old francis blantz and 65-year-old julia blantz. the victims were living on their boat while their home was under renovation. about 20 boats were destroyed. police are investigating the fire as arson. today marks 25 years since the rodney king beating in california. a video camera was rolling when los angeles officers started hitting king. it was a controversial arrest that shaped u-s history. police released king, who was black, two days later without being charged. a year later four white police officers were aquitted of criminal charges in the beating. that led to violent riots around southern california.

fired the texas trooper who arrested sandra bland. trooper brian encinia arrested sandra bland during a traffic stop last year. after bland was arrested, jail workers found her dead in a cell three days later. no one was indicted in bland's death, but a grand jury did not believe trooper encinia's claims on why he removed bland from her vehicle. encinia faces perjury charges. officials began the process of firing encinia when the decision was final. he has the right to appeal tuesday's decision. the mourning for 28-year-old officer ashley guindon continues as a her body was flown to her home in massachusetts. officer guindon was killed, saturday, on her first day in the field. she was responding to a domestic violence call in woodbridge. she was shot by suspect ronald hamilton, who was accused of shooting his wife crystal the same day. currently, hamilton is being held without bail and faces multiple charges including capital

the smoke still hasn't cleared on e- cigarettes the devices were officially banned today on flights going in and out of the u.s.. transporation secretary anthony foxx says the department wants to clarify any confusion about smoking. currently, e-cigarettes are under the same restrictions as tobacco cigarettes. the transportation department says it's attempting to limit passengers' exposure to harmful chemicals. the kids are bouncing off the walls at home, and they want to go bouncing somewhere else - a trampoline park. but is it safe? since the beginning of the year, two more trampoline parks have opened in hampton roads. but there's controversy over just how safe they really are. a leading local pediatrician is warning against trampoline parks. a park manager says safety is his first priority. and then there's the thirteen-year-old with a severe fracture. investigative reporter

visitor totals since cloud9 opened in the fall of 2013... c 1 6:51 gavin grissom general manager cloud9 trampoline park -- we've had tens of thousands upon tens of thousands of people who come through the door grissom says his injury rate is less than one half of one percent. we showed qureshi the ambulance reports from cloud9. the records we got from chesapeake ems show an average of two ambulance calls to the park each month. some involve injuries to children as young as two and three. the american academy of pediatrics says they're the ones at greatest be used for kids under six. that is one of their recommendations. so already the twos and three should not be on it. cloud9 told us in general that minimum age requirement has not applied to the indoor trampoline industry, and says its own rule requires children 6 & younger to have an adult with them at all times. grissom

(sot: sri sridharan, cyber security expert) "the more they know about you, the more ways they can trick you into doing something like clicking on a link you should not click on." so how can you be safe? experts say to be cautious of quizzes and polls that want you to sign in. don't click on links just because a friend posted it and only participate in quizzes from reputable sources

your data. we have a 10 on your side recall alert for a popular valentine's day gift. if you or your loved one bought this "love today" mug from target listen up. the u-s consumer product safety commission says the ceramic coffee mugs were mislabed as being microwave safe. it turns out the lettering on the cups are metallic and can spark when heated in a microwave. that poses a serious fire risk. these mugs were sold exclusively at target stores. if you have one you can return it to the store for a full refund. dog owners, you probably know chocolate is poisonous to your pups, but a family in arizona found gum could pose a more dangerous threat. it's because of xylitol. that's a common sweetener found in some gums. the family's lab named "dancer" recently found a container of gum in her owner's gym bag. the family says the dog ate about 25 to 30 pieces and figured she'd just have a bad stomach ache. what

are teaming up to fight illegal wildlife trafficking. google, ebay, and jetblue are among 13 companies that are joining the coalition. the u-s wildlife trafficking alliance says the businesses will use their areas of expertise and influence in different ways. for example jet-blue plans to educate passengers heading to trafficking hot- spots like latin america. e-bay and google are boosting efforts to stop people from selling illegal products online. one lawmaker said poaching wildlife parts is a multi-billion dollar industry with ties to funding terrorism. we're back with a rare find. a family in los angeles was cleaning out a deceased relative's home, when they came across major league baseball cards from the early 1900's. take a look. apparently the family's great grandfather was a collector. inside an old worn paper bag were seven rare baseball cards of hall of fame outfielder ty cobb. cobb played most of his 24 seasons for the detroit tigers and was inducted into the major league baseball hall of fame during its first year along with babe ruth. experts cerified the cards as authentic and believe they were printed sometime between 1909 and 1911. the cars are valued in the seven figure range. here's another cool sight you don't have to travel far to see. these are pictures from a new display opening saturday at norfolk botanical garden. it's called lantern-asia.
