our top story at five -- a teen accused of stealing from a virginia beach home talks exclusively with 10 on your side. a group of construction workers caught him in the act and held him until police arrived. 18-year-old tyrell slaughter is a green run high school student. in an exclusive interview with 10 on your side's jason marks he confessed it all. jason? he did.. he opened up to us and told point blank he went into the home and started grabbing things.. problem

red handed. 01=21:33 "usually i'm not a person who does stuff like this yesterday was just like an unfortunate sernario." 18-year-old tyrell slaughter was on his ways to school yesterday morning but instead ended up behind bars. he says he just made a bad decision. 01=19:04 "i just walked in and from there i just started. i went through the house and just started grabbing things i liked i guess" slaughter was in this home on chimney creek drive. the house was damaged valentine's day weekend after a small fire. restoration crews from service master showed up when slaughter was still inside. 01=19:43 "i grab my book bag and i just bolted out the back door so they chased my though two cuts and then i got tired and i didn't feel like running any more" the workers held the suspect down until police could arrive. 01=20:01 "i offered to give everything up if i didn't have to come here"

green high school. says this is his first run in with the law and he believes it will be his last. 01=24:40 "i'm not going to do this no more once i get out of here at all" he tells 10 on your side he needed money so decided to go after this guy and catch up with him" randy canough 25=:36:30 "yeah extremely grateful. we had some very emotionally family jewelry and stuff that this guy had on his possession and we are to have it back" slaughter 01=22:25 "on my behalf i'm very very very sorry i did not have any intentions of breaking and entering into your home" slaughter is being held on a 5000 bond. he will make his next court appearance april 8th. it appeared he was being very honest with us-- but talking to the home owner-- he might have left out some very big details. that part of the story

marks 10 on your side only on 10 -- we have new information from investigators in hampton about dozens of vandalism reports. we first told you sunday about 30 cars with windows shot out. but we've now learned the problem is more serious than first thought. 10 on your side's joe fisher has new numbers and pictures from police. tom, anita -- we reached out to police after neighbors asked us to investigate. it turns out in the last month there's been more than 70 cars with similar damage. police say they hope releasing the few leads with us --- will help lead them to the suspects involved. nats robert wineman is one of 36 victims whose car windows were shot out by vandals last weekend. robert wineman/victim ((c271 15:32)) "i'm an easy going man but i was very angry that night." 10 on your side started looking into the case on sunday. since then, investigators with hampton police have found dozens of similiar

"we do have a total of 73 vandalisms from vehicles." that's just since february first. many of the damaged cars, according to police, were parked in the fox hill, willow oaks and buckroe area. leaving drivers with hundreds of dollars in repairs. ((c315 49:50)) "it appears that a slingshot, pellet gun or possibly even a paintball gun might be the propulsion .. that are actually causing the damage to the vehicles." sgt. matt bond says it's unclear who is shooting at the cars, but these was captured on home surveillance video by a witness on buffalo drive --- one of more than 40 streets affected. most of the incidents are happening between friday night and sunday morning, according to bond. they plan on taking action this weekend. ((c315 51:47)) "we do plan on stepping up patrols in these areas to not only prevent these crimes but in an attempt to apprehend the individuals responsible for these crimes." investigators are now working to determine if all 70-plus incidents are connected. so far, no arrests.

asking neighbors -- especially in those affected neighborhoods --- to be on alert and call police if they see any suspicious activity. live in the newsroom, i'm joe fisher, 10 on your side. a man charged with involuntary manslaughter pled guilty. we've been covering this case since 2014. deputies say brandon bartlett mistook his neighbor for a deer and killed him. investigators found david ware, junior's body on lakeside drive in the grafton area of york county. newport news police tell us two overnight shootings are related. investigators say the first happened around 12:30 this morning on jefferson avenue near langley avenue. police say someone shot a 50-year-old man in the thigh. paramedics took him to the hospital. he should recover. a few minutes later, another gunshot victim, a 34-year-old man, walked into a local hospital. police say someone shot him several times in the chest and stomach. he's in critical condition this morning. if you have information on this crime -- call the crime line. norfolk police are taking

undetermined death in ocean view. detectives say e-m-s got a medical call around 7:00 last night from a home on west ocean view avenue on willoughby spit. police are making sure there's no foul play involved. new at five -- hampton police are investigating a hit and run accident. it happened yesterday afternoon on grimes road. police say a van exiting the taco bell/kentucky fried chicken restaurant near the intersection of grimes road and east pembroke avenue -- struck a 21-year- old man riding a bicycle. the driver fled the scene. the victim was taken to the hospital and released. call police if you have any information. a family is now taking legal action after a deadly suspected hit and run on the eastern shore. state police say last year a tour bus hit and killed brice sauver along route 13 in front of the perdue factory. today we obtained a lawsuit filed by sauver's family. they're suing the vanhool charter bus company for 15 million dollars. troopers say the victim was trying to cross the road when the

police says the driver, jihna chen, stopped the bus but did not find anything and left the scene. chen faced a charge of not stopping after an accident with injuries. a chesapeake police officer and a passenger from another car wound up in the hospital following a crash. this is moses grandy trail and millville road. both are expected to be okay. the officer was not responding to a call when the crash happened this morning. competition is brewing for portsmouth mayor kenny wright's job. former city manager john rowe is formally announcing his candidacy tonight. we told you about this yesterday as breaking news at five. 10 on your side's liz palka is live at mario's italian restaurant in portsmouth for the announcement. liz? anita - we already know at least one city councilman is already backing rowe. bill moody made an announcement on facebook saying quote, "this is great news for our city." we first reported the former city manager was

step in norfolk. norfolk is history. nats of demolition renovations include raising the plaza to prevent flooding, making more public open space, and extending main street to create a new public drop off area. the city says demolishing the 50- year-old building marks a big step forward in improving the city's downtown area. demo should be finished in 8 weeks the rubble will be recycled for other road projects throughout the city. we're looking ahead to the groundbreaking of the new bonner bridge. these are shots of the current one under

years ago. north carolina governor pat mccrory announced a ceremony for tuesday morning to mark the beginning of its replacement. for years, 10 on your side has covered the battle between environmentalists and residents to build a new bridge connecting hatteras island with the rest of the outer banks. n-c-d-o-t says the new bridge will be finished by 20-18 and the old bridge will be demolished the following year. coming up on wavy news 10 - norfolk schools proposes a budget. find out what's on the chopping block. but first -- the city is gaining control of two closed schools. brandi cummings will tell us what the city has in

salary increase for full-time employees, money to open the new southside stem academy at campostella, and an additional 5 instructional technology resources teachers. but there are also 51 jobs on the chopping block. those include eliminating 50-percent of part time clerical positions, 12 reading and math specialists at middle schools, and 10 at elementary schools. there will be a public hearing on the proposed budget next wednesday. anchors ad-lib toss we are monitoring a wintry mix headed our way -- but first let me take a moment to officially welcome anita blanton as our newest anchor on wavy at 5,6,

light rail may be on the ballot in november. city treasurer john atkinson says his team collected at least four thousand signatures on super tuesday. he says in total he has

surpasses the 16,500 signatures to put a question on the ballot. voters in virginia could see the question, "should city council of virginia beach spend local funds to extend light rail from norfolk to town center in virginia beach?" dozens of migrants have been turned back by macedonian authorities this morning because of issues with documents carrying stamps issued by greek police. migrants and refugees said that macedonia did not accept greek computer generated stamps. one syrian refugee said he was waiting to cross from greece to macedonia for three days, but was turned back because of these stamps. conditions in the camp are poor and getting worse by the day, with many more people arriving than being allowed to move on to macedonia. coming up on wavy news 10 - could a biochemist have discovered a repellent to reduce transmission of the zika virus? we'll tell you how a new compound was discovered by accident. ahead at 5:30 - superbugs

researchers in chile have developed a substance which may be capable of repelling the species of mosquito that transmits the zika virus. the discovery of the compound was an accident. it came about by joining elements used in other experiments. these elements in the mix include a substance that prevents the mosquito from passing through a substance, copper powder, an anti- bacterial, and a natural non-toxic insecticide. by adding this special mix to detergent when you wash your clothes -- you could be protected from the mosquito for up to a day. the substance must undergo further testing before being approved for public use -- but researchers say it could be ready for the market immediately. stay with us. wavy news 10 at 5:30, starts right now!
