only on 10 - shocking video shows a fight between a bus driver and a student in newport news. this startling video you're looking at shows the driver, 58-year-old john hopkins attacking a 12-year-old boy from crittenden middle school. you can see the student hit back. this morning, that driver faces an assault charge and the student is

the fight. rico bush has more now on this shocking video you'll see only on surveillance video from the school bus shows the student acting inappropriately before hopkins pulled over and got physical. we have yet to see that video leading up to the altercation, but we did obtain footage of the fight only moments after it started on a crowded school bus. let's show you another look at the altercation. you can hear students screaming in the background as hopkins hits and chocks the child on the school bus. in the video - the student is also seen grabbing the driver and hitting him back. we've decided to blur the child's face. police say the assault happened wednesday afternoon when the driver was taking students home from class. we caught with parents for comment on the shocking video - take a listen to their concerns. saritta ayers - parent - c10 01:0719 "i mean that's pretty, pretty messed up i mean just that video it looks bad it looks really bad." butt to sahilys price - parent

our joe fisher someone shot out about 30 vehicle windows. when we spoke to police, we found out that number more than doubled. officers are investigating 73 cases since february 1st. police say this also happened in the willow oaks and buckroe neighborhoods. sgt. matt bond, hampton police "it appears that a slingshot, pellet gun or possibly even a paintball gun might be the propulsion, the items that are being propelled into these windows that are actually causing the actual damage to the vehicles." "obviously, it's got to be very frustrating to wake up in the morning and go out and realize that your vehicle has been vandalized in any way, shape, or form." police are not sure who is doing this, but here's a clue they have so far. it's a picture from a surveillance video on one of the streets. it shows a dark-colored, medium-sized pickup truck. police say most of the incidents happened on friday and saturday nights. officers will step up patrols, but if you have any information that could help, call

cars. only on 10, a virginia beach high school student, who's now a burglary suspect, confessed to the crime. he admits instead of going to school, he went inside someone's home with bad intentions. 18-year-old tyrell slaughter spoke with our jason marks from jail. he says this was the first and last time he will do something like this.

to green run high, when he decided to go inside what he thought was a nice looking home on chimney creek drive. the back door just happened to be open. "i just walked in and from there i just started. i went through the house and just started grabbing things i liked i guess" when a renovation crew walked inside, and slaughter took off running. workers chased him down and held him until police arrived. slaughter had jewelry and other priceless items on him. he had this to say when our jason marks asked him why he took the items. "i have - i had no money at the time, sir, so i was kind of money hungry. it's kind of hard out the green run area to get a job and money, so i guess i found that's easier than going to get a job" slaughter faces burglary and grand larceny charges. he remains in jail on a

today we're waiting for a big decision on trash plans in hampton roads. each city served by the southeastern public service authority, or s-p-s-a, will make decision today that will affect what you pay for trash for the next 10 years. in the cash-strapped city of portsmouth, officials are looking for ways to cut costs. right now, a company called "wheelabrator" takes spsa's trash and sorts and burns it. another company - repower south- put in a bid to take over spsa's account. repower south plans to build a facility in chesapeake and turn the trash into pellets. a portsmouth city councilman says the two contracts differ by 20-dollars per ton. repower south has a lower bid right now. however the councilman says there's a third option - dump spsa altogether. danny meeks / portsmouth city council c0062 2:33:36 "if you're in the low 40s or mid 40s thats still 15 dollars a ton cheaper than any where in the neighborhood of 1.6 to 2

john kasich tried to stay above the fray and literaly said "i won't bite" when the moderator tried to get a comment about trump. at the end of the debate, each candidate said they would support the eventual republican nominee. last night trump also responded to harsh comments from former presidential candidate mitt romney. at a speech in utah yesterday he said trump as president would hurt the party, and he's only "playing the american public for suckers". here's how trump responded. "he was a failed candidate who should have beaten president obama very easily. he failed miserably, and it was an embarrassment to everybody, including the republican party." trump endorsed romney for president in 20-12. and it wasn't just romney who spoke out against trump in yesterday's speech in utah. senator and former presidential candidate john mccain, and house speaker paul ryan also said they don't support trump. no super coming up at 7:00 on the today show, matt

aspects of an autonomous vehicle are okay. about 61-percent of survey takers say they want some self-driving features such as self-park. watch out where you open those car doors. a new bill moving forward in richmond right now would fine drivers who fling open their doors and hurt bicyclists. lawmakers say people would pay a 50-dollar fine if they open a door "when it's not reasonably safe to do so." the virginia senate passed the bill last month, and it's now facing a vote in the house of delegates. new this morning, a litter of puppies is safe and sound thanks to firefighters in california. look at this video of the rescue. crews pulled three puppies, their young mother, and another dog from an 8-foot deep space under a downtown fresno building. it wasn't an easy task. one firefighter had to crawl 70 feet through a concrete tunnel to get the animals. this morning,

new this morning, the serial stow-away who found her way onto several planes without a ticket, is facing the consequences. a chicago judge sentenced 64-year- old marilyn hartman to six-months at a mental health facility. the sentence comes after she pleaded guilty to trespassing on state property. police arrested her last month at chicago' s o'hare international aiport. she violated a previous court order to stay away from airports. police arrested her three previous times for boarding a plane without a ticket. police in part of new york state arrested a woman because she had a fake license plate on her vehicle. you can see right here that it is made of cardboard, and painted to look like a real one. a deputy in erie county stopped her wednesday after he noticed it. he charged the 28-year-old driver with a felony. she also had a suspended registration

tonight, the u-s-n-s laramie will come home after a 3-and-a-half month deployment. the laramie's crew of civil service mariners supported u-s naval operations around the world. that included refueling ships and replenishing them with supplies and cargo. this is video of a previous homecoming. the laramie is scheduled to pull into naval station norfolk around 8:00 tonight.

hearing from the man who wants to be the next mayor of portsmouth. as we reported earlier this week, former city manager john rowe announced he will enter the race. he'll face current mayor, kenny wright. rowe made the official announcement in front of a crowded group of supporters last night. three councilmembers and the sheriff have also publicly endorsed him. john rowe - mayoral candidate c1 18:44:46 - we get to not only set the future for portsmouth. but we get a chance to set it by examining the past behavior of our current local elected officials. rowe was ousted from the city manager's position after a city council vote in april 2015. at the time, mayor wright said it was because of rowe's proposed tax increase to close a budget gap. a big debate in portsmouth is over the confederate monument. this morning, governor terry mcauliffe is reviewing a bill that could impact on monuments across virginia. house bill 587 passed the

week. portsmouth mayor kenny wright, who opposes the monument in olde town, says he's asked the governor to veto the bill. a law from 1998 already bans local governments from removing war monuments, but the sponsor of the new bill changed the language slightly. it would protect all war monuments, no matter when they were built. the norfolk school board is giving an elementary school building back to the city. board members voted unanimously to turn over oakwood elementary school, off central business park drive. a school spokeswoman says the city requested the property because it has a buyer. a city spokersperson would only say, the city is talking with a private company about expanding its business. if the deal goes through, the company would tear the school down. the students who go to oakwood would move to richard bowling elementary, a few miles away. this morning, we have new information about which local sports authority stores are closing. this after the company filed for bankruptcy. the store on coliseum drive in hampton, the one at janaf in norfolk, and
