court. the committee vote follows the senate's failure to elect court of appeals judge rossie alston to the high court. cuccinelli served as attorney general from 2010 to 2014. he ran for governor in 2013, he lost to govrnor mcauliffe. families of two portsmouth murder victims will have to wait a little longer to get justice. today the trial of a man accused of stabbing a woman more than 100 times was continued for the third time. to make things worse- the person who killed her friend that same day has never been charged. 10 on your side's jason marks was in court this morning. jason this all happened back in 2012. that's when we told you a man was found dead in a buringing car in the port norfolk section of portsmouth. just hours later a woman was found dead inside his apartment. this is what the scene looked like back in 2012. police first discovered david gough body in the burning car. he had been killed. they then found the body of his friend anne gilkerson in

street. she was stabbed 123 times. years went by without any arrests but last year a grand jury indictied keonte key and charged him with gilkerson's murder. the trial has now been continued three times after today's continuance. agonazing for gilkerson's family. it's also been hard on gough's family because no one has ever been charged in his death. police say they just don't have enough evidence to charge anyone. "it is hard going on with your daily activity this is something she thinks about everyday you know she misses seeing her son he did a lot for her he was very loving" police do believe that the two crimes are intertwined. coming up tonight at 5 we'll explain why key's case was continued again and what procecutors think happened to gough. jason

gates county officials will not say much about why a middle school principal is on administrative leave for the next 30 days. we first told you yesterday that central middle school's principal - james woods - was put on leave, friday. and parents say - they weren't notified, and they haven't heard a word about why that happened. 10 on your side's lex gray spent the day in gates county working to find out more. lex? stephanie, parents tell me they're frustrated that the school board isn't giving them more information -- especially since it seems principal james woods is respected and well-liked. superintendent barry williams confirmed to 10 on your side yesterday that woods is on a 30-day administrative leave. but that's about all he'll say. the gates county sheriff tells us they're not involved - that this is a school administrative matter. i tried to reach all six school board members today. only one answered the phone. i asked board member leslie byrum if he was aware of a misconduct investigation involving

he said yes -- but told me he can't talk about it until it's resolved. he and the superintendent say information about employees is protected by state law. but parents tell me - the damage to woods' reputation may already be done. deanna wright/gates county parent i hope they're wrong and they're trying to get things straight for him. but other than that, it's just disgraceful the way they're doing him. waiting since friday to hear what's going on at her daughter's school. live in the newsroom, lex gray, 10 on your side. traffic troubles today in chesapeake because of a gas leak. capostella road shut down between diamond hill and battlefield boulevard will crews made repairs. the area has since reopened. the fire department says a contractor was digging and hit the gas line. no one was hurt. there were no evacuations. norfolk police say a driver faces charges after a car hit two people on the sidewalk. it happened around 8-30 this morning at the intersection of hampton boulevard and 26th street. police say a jeep and a nissan crashed into each other at the intersection. one of the cars spun around and hit a mother and a child standing on the corner. they were taken to the hospital to get checked out. we're told they will both be okay. an overwhelming show of support on paper-- in the appeals process for bob mcdonnell. it all comes from 13 different sources ahead of the former

time on the interstate. here's a live look from our wavy traffic jam cams of interstate 64 westbound at bay avenue in norfolk. all westbound lanes are closed because of a crash. there's a big backup. so you can expect delays. work is underway on a brand new bonner bridge on the outer banks. it's a project several years in the making. there was a groundbreaking ceremony this morning. and 10 on your side's erin kelly was there. the more than 50 year old bridge far from here, earlier this morning. there was a big turnout for this event. governor pat mccrory told the crowd this was personal to him. it's a $246 million dollar project. the new bridge is designed for a 100-year lifespan. it's expected to open in the fall of 2018. instead of one navigational span, the 3.5 mile project will have seven spans. we talked to residents who depend on the bridge.

holding a public input session tonight. leaders want to know how you think the city should spend money next year: schools, public safety, developement, taxes, whatever's on your mind. the meeting starts tonight at 6:30 in norfolk council chambers at city hall. tonight in newport news --- the school board wants your thoughts on next year's budget. there's a public hearing about the proposed 2017 operating budget at the administration building on warwick boulevard. it starts at 6:30. if you want to speak in person you'll have to fill out a request when you arrive. hampton roads is getting more than six-million-dollars to combat homelessness. u.s. senators mark warner and tim kaine of virginia made the announcement today. the money is coming from the the u.s. department of housing and urban development's continuum of care program. the money will go to local and non-profit organizations. more than 23-million dollars will be split among cities across the commonwealth. a close call caught on tape in colorado. a semi

we're on your side with information about the recalls of two brands of popular food products for children. the makers of gogo squeez are recalling certain pouches of their non-organic applesauce. the company says food product residue may have made it into the product. it's recalling

dates between december 4, 2015 and march 4, 2017. if you bought them --- you can go to the gogo squeez website to fill out a replacement voucher. that information is on wavy dot com. perdue foods is recalling 45-hundred pounds of chicken nugget products produced for applegate farms. they could be contaminated with plastic. the 8 ounce boxes have a best before date of september 27, 2016. information about this recall is also on wavy dot com. click on the "news" tab, then "on your side" cigarettes may not be the only things that could lead to lung cancer. researchers at the university of texas m-d anderson cancer center compared about two-thousand with nearly 25-hundred others. those with diets high in carbs like those found in white bread and bagels were more likely to develop lung cancer. those foods raise blood glucose levels quickly --- which in turn

about increasing crime and distrust among the public. mark herring is traveling the state as part of his public safety tour. the focus is to promote trust and respect between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. we want to ensure that police can safely and effectibvley protect our commuities and we want to make sure evedyone is treated equally and fairly the a-g's office has develped initiatives to help accompish those goals. i'll tell you more about that coming up at 5:30. now an update on some pieces of legislation making their way through the virginia general assembly. the virginia senate has approved a bill that would allow the state to execute condemned inmates in the electric chair when it can't find lethal injection drugs. the house has already approved the bill. the bill faces a final vote in the house because of a minor amendment before going to governor terry mcauliffe. virginia gives inmates the choice of lethal injection or the electric chair. if they don't choose, they receive the injection. like many

struggled to obtain lethal-injection drugs in recent years because drug companies have protested their use in executions. governor mcauliffe has vetoed a bill that would allow the sale of drinks with high alcohol content like everclear . mcauliffe says he's concerned about the impact the bill could have on binge drinking on college campuses. in his veto message : the governor said the state needs to study the issue further --- with focus on the restrictions and strategies by other states to reduce potential abuse of such products by young adults and youth. a bill heading through the general assembly would allow some students to use public funding to pay for private school tuition. the virginia senate approved it monday. it would allow parents of students with disabilites to use state money for textbooks and tuition at a private school. opponents of the bill say allowing taxpayer dollars to fund education costs at religious schools violates the state's constitution. a fire today in chicago

this was the scene as crews battled the fire at a flea market. thick plumes of black smoke went into the sky. firefighters r rcued one person from the flames. no one was hurt. the building's roof parking deck collapsed --- and sent cars crashing into the fire below. nine people are hurt -- four seriously --- after a commuter train derailed in northern california. union pacific believes a mudslide swept a tree onto its tracks. investigators say the train may have collided with that downed tree before tumbling into a river. it happened around 7-30 last night about 40 miles southeast of san francisco. the four car train was carrying 214 passengers between san jose and stockton on the last run of the night. two of the cars derailed. one stayed upright --- tethering on a ledge. the other car fell into the creek. rad akhter/passenger: it just shifted the gravity all of a sudden, and you know we were all just panicking." kathy heilmann/passenger "well i was in the middle

jerk and a very abrupt stop and didn't realize until later that the front car had derailed." train was going. since the disappearance of malaysia airlines flight m-h-370. the wife of the in-flight supervisor held a small memorial today at a church in malaysia. friends and family prayed and lit passengers and crew . chinese relatives of the m-h-370 passengers marked today at a buddhist temple in beijing. they came together for emotional support and to pray for their missing loved ones. investigators still haven't come to a conclusion about what happened to the jet. the international team looking into the aircraft's disappearance says it is still reviewing key information. the team is led by malaysia and includes investigators from the united states, britain, china, france and australia. investigators believe the plane flew thousands of miles off course before crashing into the ocean off australia. malaysia's prime minister

an 8-year-old florida boy says his father is a hero who saved his life. the man's quick reflexes stopped a baseball bat from hitting his son in the face. and it's all in pictures. a newspaper reporter captured the exact moments firefighter shaun cunningham stopped a flying baseball bat. they were at a spring training game this weekend for landon's birthday. landon borrowed his dad's phone to take pictures and he looked down for a second. that's the exact moment the bat slipped out of the hitter's hands. shaun cunningham, 37/landon's father "i saw the bat heading toward him. i didn't really

she's working on tonight, liz? stephanie - in the last two weeks, the president of the firefighter's union was suspended for doing an interview with ten on your side. and a city councilman was fined 15-hundred dollars for violating the closed meeting rule. neither of these issues are on the agenda for tonight's meeting. but that doesn't mean they won't come up tonight. we do know - the issue of retirees' healthcare will be spoken about during the non-agenda speakers. this is after retirees received letters saying the city would no longer continue a health reimbursement account as part of their yearly coverage plan. this is also the first meeting since he was fined 15-hundred dollars. in a letter, council members say he violated their new rule that you can't talk about business that came up during a closed session. meeks denies he ever did that - and is fighting the claim. another group fighting recent action by the city: the local firefighters union. saying their president, rusty

without pay for doing an interview on staffing. we will be looking for response from the city tonight. liz palka, 10 on your side. scary moments this morning for the children on this school bus in texas. the bus was stranded in three feet of flood water. this is in denton ---- north of dallas. fire crews carried the six children to a boat nearby. the boat was on a trailer and hitched to a truck. the bus and the truck drove out of the water and onto dry land. the children got on another bus and went on to school. a driver is cooperating with state police after they say she hit and killed a new jersey state trooper. this story first broke this morning during wavy news 10 today. investigators say 31-year-old trooper sean cullen was at the scene of a car crash and fire on the interstate last night --- when a passing car hit him. trooper cullen died at the hospital this morning. cullen had been a trooper for about two years. state police are still

have been filed. a close call caught on tape during a traffic stop in michigan. a driver shot at a police officer. "what's up man?" gunshots this happened saturday. after the driver fired a gun --- he took off --- and sparked a high-speed chase through a neighborhood. officers eventually arrested the driver. the 21-year-old suspect faces a long list of charges including attempted murder. the officer he shot at wasn't hit --- but has temporary hearing loss. a woman driving a "scooby-doo mystery machine" led california police on a chase! and she's still on the run this afternoon. don't believe us? here's a picture of that suspect vehicle. the driver wasn't scooby or shaggy. it was 51-year-old sharon turman. police say she tried to make a run for it during a routine probation check. her probation officer called 9-1-1 with a little humor.

this our 12 on velma or daphne? i think it's on scooby" natsot/police radio: "it's almost a teal green 90 dodge caravan it had yellow paint splattered on the side, look for scooby doo nonsense" police say turman ran several cars off the road before she vanished like a ghost in the cartoon show! officers called off the chase because of safety concerns. this morning, she's still on the loose. if you think that's crazy, check this out. police in illinois are releasing pictures and video from an unbelievable traffic stop to deter people from drinking and driving. an officer pulled over the driver of this car in january because they were driving down the street with a 15-foot tree sticking out of the grill. police say the driver was also on the wrong side of the road. police charged the driver with d-u-i. some questioned the authenticity of the photos, so officer released this footage of the traffic

message saying "don't drink and drive". the florida highway patrol has released footage of the moment a garbage truck fell from interstate 95. it happened on president's day. you can see kaseem smith driving the city of miami garbage truck. all of a sudden --- he loses control. the garbage truck falls 100 feet off the side of the interstate --- and lands in a park. troopers say it's an absolute miracle the driver survived. . (trooper joe sanchez/fl highway patrol ) "in the video, you see him hitting the left guardrail twice and then overreacting and going off i-95. it's a miracle that he survived." the driver is out of the hospital. the florida highway patrol is still investigating the crash. check out the aftermath of a crash in pittsburgh. that's a car on the roof of a grocery store. the car didn't really fly through the air. a nearby road is parallel to the roof. the car crashed through a barrier and stopped on the roof.

check out this surveillance video of a plane falling from the sky in new york. this happened saturday afternoon. the tail of the plane goes up, then dips down. the plane hit the ground with the parachute attached to it eventually draping over the building nearby. the chute helped glide the plane down. seconds later the father and daughter on board walk away. the father --- also the pilot --- says the engine died. and get this...the man received only a scratch to his forehead. his daughter was not hurt. a 10 on your side follow up. the two stafford county volunteer firefighters who were suspended for taking an 18-month-old girl to the hospital in a fire engine have been reinstated. as we reported yesterday at 4, the two volunteers were the first on the scene of a fire, when a little girl was having a seizure. captain james kelley, one of the reinstated firefighters, says he would not change his decision. he's received a lot of support from the community.

believe is standing on borrowed time. those headlines in just minutes -- but first at five we're following breaking news in chesapeake. you're looking at the scene above cozy corner from chopper 10. flames broke out just before 2 this afternoon, and firefighters labored for about an hour before it was under control. 10 on your side's liz kilmer is live at the scene. liz it looks like that fire did a lot of damage. it sure did, tom and anita. if you take a look behind me you can see this apartment here is entirely destroyed -- fire damaged three attached apartments. the good news is -- no one was hurt when the fire broke out. although three people were inside three separate apartments. take a look - viewer video captures the intense smoke and flames shooting into the sky. firefighters spent about an hour getting the fire under control. flames melted the siding from two nearby buildings. witnesses feared the fire

back open after a multi vehicle crash. we are following developing news in portsmouth. a family is still waiting for justice after the death of their son in 2012. the accused killer of his friend was in court today for a motions hearing. -- but no one has been connected to the death of david gough, jr. gough and his friend anne gilkerson were murdered in 2012. gough's body was found inside a burning jeep in port norfolk. later that same day police found the body of gilkerson in gough's home. 10 on your side's jason marks spoke to family members pleading for answers. this is a very complicated case. a lot of moving parts as we found out today in court. gilkerson's alleged killer has been caught and will soon be on trial.. but gough's case remains unsolved.
