great to have you here. >> great to start the week this way. >> we have a lot coming up including a lot of us thinking about michael jackson, the legacy of the pop icon of last week and a half and stunned nation that's been paying respects to him. they're not done because tomorrow as many as 750,000 people could line the streets of l.a. to remember the king of pop. this morning we're going to take a look at a unique tribute to michael jackson. >> not to lose sight of another icon that passed away the same day as michael, "people" magazine released a special book on the life and legacy of farrah fawcett. we'll give you a sneak peek. >> a punch line for so many bad jokes but mother-in-laws are a sticking point. we'll help you diffuse the tension in your marriage if you have tension over your mother-in-law. gets get a check of the top stories once again. ann curry is off this morning but hoda kotb is filling in. >> president obama is in moscow

for a two-day summit hoping to warm what has become cool relations. talks are focusing on a new treaty. the u.s. is trying to persuade russia in developing a missile defense system. robert macnamara died this morning. five murders in gaffney, south carolina. funerals were held for two victims and officials believe it's a serial killer. a sketch of the suspect was released believed to be in his 40s. police in los angeles are bracing for huge crowds expected to gather tomorrow for the public memorial service for michael jackson. nbc's jeff rossen is at the staples center. good morning to you, jeff. >> reporter: good morning to you. and really when you hear about the plans for this memorial service it's sounding more like a rock concert.

fans flying in from all around the world. celebrities flying in to rehearse and perform ahead of the service and here we are one full day out and this entire area is already on lockdown. it is the hottest ticket in the world. the michael jackson memorial service and the guest list is coming together. nbc news has learned possible performers include stevie wonder, ma rriah carey, lionel richie and jennifer hudson. diana ross will attend the service as well. jackson named her in the will as a backup guardian for his three kids. >> we've never seen anything quite like this. potential of a billion people watching and certainly hundreds of thousands of people that will be in and around the district. >> reporter: 1.6 million people registered for tickets online but organizers are only giving out just over 17,000 of them. this e-mail notification went out to all of the winners sunday night. congratulations it says. from there you enter a special

code and download the ticket. what was it like the moment you got this e-mail that you're in? >> the moment i got the e-mail i freaked out. >> reporter: los angeles police urge the ticketless to stay away, up to 750,000 people are expected to ignore the warning and show up any way. >> i'm coming with or without a ticket. >> reporter: before the service starts, michael jackson may already be buried. nbc news learned he'll be laid to rest at the forest lawn cemetery in los angeles. sources say it could happen as early as this evening. over the weekend investigators made some progress hunting down the doctors who supplied jackson with pills. according to published reports, they're looking at five doctors possibly involved. nbc news learned members of the jackson family were so worried about michael's health just weeks before his death they contacted dr. howard samuels to lead an intervention. he runs a well known rehab center and says jackson's death exposes hollywood's open secret. celebrities paying cash for

"people" magazine is remembering their lives with special tribute edition. remembering farrah is available now. remembering michael is available on friday. good to see you. a lot of people getting ready for the public memorial tomorrow at the staples center. it will be a mob scene. this tribute book, the remembering michael tribute, there's a great photo of michael sitting in this throne and a quote under it from his book is printed which says often in the past performers have been tragic figures. it's so sad.

you feel cheated as a fan that you don't get to watch them evolve as they grow older. >> it's eerie. >> what does it mean now? >> i think he was very self-conscious. he was aware in many ways of his place. there was a quote early on when he died last week where lisa marie presley said she had conversations with him about her father. he had almost this -- i don't want to say obsessive but sort of self-awareness as if he had to fulfill what would happen to him. and i think as you go through the book the photographs are astounding. we did an issue when he died, current issue of weekly but there were so many photographs to talk about. we really wanted to get to. what you see up there now -- >> him on top of the cadillac. >> it's in london. you realize that he looks very happy on one level and excited but there's also an incredible

loneliness about all of that. that is what his life was like. >> there's so many people quoted in this book. so many people paying him tribute. he's the only reason i do what i do. gladis knight said he had an incredible gift. where will michael jackson stand in the scheme of things? >> he's near the top. no question about it. listen to the radio now. listen to any artist. you can hear his voice in these recordings. my kids are 10 and 12 years old and they have been amazed by the music. shocking to see how they react to it. it's almost as if it's 1983 again. no recognition that he looks old or dated. it's timeless. that's just testament to where he'll be. >> another quote in the book from sammy davis jr. talking about michael jackson's dance move signature and he says he takes a step that you've been doing and by the time he

switches it around, you don't recognize it. we know how incredible he was with his music but when it came to his moves, how much of that was michael jackson putting his stamp on that move and that song. >> it's probably in some ways more than the music itself. when you see that moon walk and you try to -- all over america this weekend there were kids trying to do that in their socks. everyone was trying to recreate that. >> i remember motown watching that on tv. >> when people ask will there be another michael jackson, the answer is probably no because the culture was so much more unified then. 47 million people watched that show. you don't get super bowls with 47 million people watching it. that moment was seen by tens of millions of people and the next day things had completely changed. >> so many people are wondering about his children and there's a great quote apparently when michael was interviewed by "life" magazine saying i wrote

more songs in my life because of him, speaking of his oldest son, more than any other inspiration. what will kids learn from their father about his music? >> you have to imagine kids now, older ones, are probably going to youtube and downloading his music. they're aware of the impact of who their father was. i think only they really will know what that's like. to know him as a private person and to be born after his massive fame will be one thing but i think if they listen to what people are saying and go to youtube and hear the music, they can't help but be moved and impressed. >> another icon who we're remembering passed away the same day. you put out a beautiful tribute remembering farrah. the image that we have burned in our brains is her as a "charlie angel." how much of her legacy will be that world even though she was

only on the show for a year? >> 60 million people watched that show every week. it was a brief period of time. it's what america was like in the mid '70s. fresh. young. a certain kind that snapshot in time nobody saw it coming. no one could recreate it. if you look at the photographs in the book, it's bean amazing testament to what we were like in that era. >> the pinup posters and jeans and skateboard. all there. >> we'll remember her relationship with ryan o'neil and her battle with cancer. >> it's been astounding. she was one at the end of the day where she was one very, very tough woman. that's going to be her testament. >> there with her son as a young boy there. thank you for sharing these

someone else is now his next of kin? will i still be as close to my child as i feel i need to be? will i still have the influence i would like to have? will i still have respect in the family? >> i know your book offers guidance and you have very dramatic examples. one of them really touched me in the heart and that is the one about a lady who was banned by her daughter-in-law from seeing her grandchildren. what can the grandmother do? >> this was a tragic case. she said to me, look at me. i'm a harmless woman. no one else hates me. and yet my daughter-in-law has said i'm not fit to see my own grandchildren. i think in a case like that, a woman has to sit down with her son and her daughter-in-law and say, you know, this is giving up too much. it's not only a deprivation to me, a loss to me, it's also a

loss to my grandchild because grandparents play an enormously important role in children's lives. she could say, you know, i'll listen to you. what is it you're afraid of? what is it -- i'll respect your views on parenting but this is a very primary bond and we've got to find some way to work it out. >> do the relationship between mother-in-laws and daughters in law begin rocky and gets better or vice versa? how does it work? >> there are many different ways. the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law both want to be the primary woman in their family with the say over how the family is run, child rearing, whether the home is neat and tidy. sometimes there are different views that come off as competition. each feels as though the other is undermining her and sort of marginalizing her. now, sometimes that can get

better as each earns the respect of the other. it is very important to try to settle and get off and start things well because negative patterns of interaction can become like really bad habits and they're very hard to break. >> i think this has a lot to do with insecurity. both are trying to mark their territory and not lose their son/husband. >> it has to do with fear that you're going to lose something that you really value. the best way to make the relationship better is to address that fear and to show the mother-in-law or the daughter-in-law i appreciate what you're bringing to the family. i do value you. it's much easier to set those boundaries that you need to set between you as a couple and

in-laws if they feel secure they'll remain a part of that family that they're not going to be excluded. >> i have a great relationship with my ex-mother-in-law. i think it's because from the very beginning i thought it was important to validate here. that's a key thing. >> it is. we need recognition and respect and assurance that we will continue to be part of the family. >> okay. i imagine the son/husband is key. he can do a lot to help the situation. >> the son's role is crucial. first of all, he can act to reassure his mother that even though he's changed and he has a primary person in his life, that he still values his mother but he can also show his mother that he is part of a couple and that he values his wife and that he sees her as part of his life and in order to continue the close relationship with his mother he needs his mother to respect him

can accomplish the world really. >> even playing golf as we see there. nice shot. very good, bill. >> magic of tv. >> was there any concern because as you know with so many reality show couples, the minute they decide to play out their lives live in front of tv cameras or as close to live as possible, there's that reality show curse. did that enter your mind at all? >> i think we kind of -- we're pretty set in our ways. when we met, you know, my character is my character. she's who she is. i think we're pretty settled. we won't change much. >> this is about following you two as real life we see this is you all in hawaii celebrating your first anniversary, right? that's from this season here. what else are we going to see? part of the season is you two trying or thinking about starting a family, right? >> yeah. >> that's exciting. >> building a family is another big part of being married and

we're not getting any younger. we want to start the process sooner rather than later so we can enjoy our kids. >> you two talked to doctors about the reality of that and genetics. being a doctor, what's the reality of having a child together? >> well, i mean, there are two things to consider. our genetics and chances of having another person versus an average size baby and also the risk of health for me and the baby in terms of pregnancy or not. we're trying to figure out what the best way is to go about starting a family because we want it to be safe for everyone. >> absolutely. we do, too. we wish you so much luck and success with the first season of "the little couple." great to meet you both. thank you for being here. you can catch "the little couple" on tlc. away we go. should you put it on your must see movie list? we'll talk about it next. what do you feel? sadness. loss of interest.
