a spot so good everyone missed it, everyone but one member of the family. we'll tell you who and meet them, coming up. then, if you're feeling lucky, you're going to want to see this. we have some ladybugs in the studio. we were inspired by the story yesterday, the millions of ladybugs that invaded one colorado community. the spot residents are hoping will remain a well-kept secret. that's not red tree or red bark, that's a gazillion ladybugs. >> 10 million ladybugs and they brought four back. >> times are hard. a busy week in washington. we'll check in with david gregory in just a moment. first, big developments in the investigation of a shocking murder of a florida couple. they were the parents of 16 children, many with special needs. mark potter is live in pensacola with all the latest. mark, good morning. >> good morning to you, lester.

investigators say they found the van that they believe was the one spotted entering and leaving the crime scene and ininterviewing two persons of interest and one question they can't answer is why were these crimes committed. at the county sheriff's office police escorted one of the persons of interest from the building, officials say they're getting closer to solving the case. >> we have some very, very good leads that we're currently pursuing. >> reporter: their big break came when a tip line caller told them where they could find the red van that was seen by the home security camera at the scene. >> once we located the van and developed an address where the van was registered to and interviews with the friends and family then led us to two persons of interest. >> reporter: cameras capture the van approaching the billings

house at 7:00 and then seen leaving the house just five minutes later. >> i will share this with you, i think we were surprised with the repidity of the crime. >> reporter: investigators have still not developed a motive. >> i'm there to burglarize you, i could know that you have prescription drugs or large amounts of jewelry or cash. >> reporter: meanwhile in the community, an outpouring of sympathy for the eight adopted children, some with special needs, who were in the house. they were unhurt physically, but one of the children told a school bus driver he missed his mom and dad. >> any time you want to talk to him, just look up to heven and they'll always be there, but they'll be there in spirit always watching out for you. >> reporter: those children are now being cared for by relatives at an undisclosed location. back to the investigation, detectives say they are also

looking for a third man believed involved in the killings. he has not yet been identified. >> thank you very much. that sheriff is david morgan and joins us now. sheriff morgan, good morning, thank you so much for being with us. >> morning, mr. holt. >> let me begin by talking about the red van that seems so crucial to the investigation. any doubt in your mind that that van is linked to these crimes? >> at this point we have confirmed that, yes, it is the van in the video. >> the individuals you had in custody, were they associated with the van? >> well, again, i want to be correct here, mr. holt. we do not have anyone in custody at this time. we still have a couple people of interest that we're interviewing. >> i'll rephrase the question. have the people that you have questioned, are they associated with that van? >> yes, sir, that is correct. >> and are we talking semantics now, people of interest versus

suspects here? are they, in fact, suspects in these murders? >> as you well know, mr. holt, we have to be very careful as we progress through this investigation and we are taking our lead through the state attorney's office. when we bring in individuals for interviews, we cannot be too accusatory. there is a tremendous difference between an interview and an interrogation. >> how close to an arrest are you? >> we believe, sir, that we're very close. the evidence as i said yesterday, the dam is sort of broken. we're continuing to get calls from neighbors and family members and so we believe that we are currently on the right track and we hope to have some arrests very, very early. >> the home this family lived in was wired with pretty sophisticated camera surveillance system. how helpful have those images been in your investigation and have you learned some important evidence from those pictures? >> yes, sir, they have. at this time, of course, because of the ongoing investigation, we

can't release them. we hope at some point to release much more information to the press. before i forget, mr. holt, please let me thank nbc and other media outlets for assisting us in this case. >> i know you've gotten a lot of important leads and that's gratifying to hear, but in terms of your investigation right now, what happens, are you able to talk to any of the children or were any of the children useful witnesses? >> we have spoken, of course, extensively with the family and, of course, the children that are present. using children as witnesses and because of their age can become problematic and we're coordinating that through the state attorney's office. >> those images of the red van, the red van was there only a short time and you have made remarks publicly that whoever did that was experienced. talk about that timeline and what it may say about how this all went down? >> well, again, it indicates to us, mr. holt, that it was a planned operation because of the quickness of it.

if you note the time span on that video is less than 10 minutes from the time the van enters from the time it leaves. again, all of us, upon viewing this tape from the home were shocked because it was in and out and very effective. >> do we know if the couple country fronted their killers, if there was a struggle? >> we do, sir, but we can't release that at this time. >> all right, i know you have a lot to do and we'll get back to you with more information as this progresses. our thanks to you for spending time with us this morning. >> thank you, sir. >> all right, now, here's jenna. switching gears now, president obama and family are back at the white house. they returned to the white house overnight from their week-long trip to europe and africa. savannah guthrie has more on the president and his trip. h >> reporter: the african nation of ghana embraced president

obama like a native son. in an address to ghana's parliament, the president traced his own father and grandfather's footsteps on the continent. >> after all, i have the blood of africa within me. >> reporter: and challenged the youth here to build a better future. >> you can conqur disease and end conflicts and make change from the bottom up. you can do that. yes, you can. because in this moment, history's on the move. >> reporter: wherever he went, throngs gathered hoping to catch a glimpse of the american president. mr. obama's face seemed to be on everything here from t-shirts to billboards. touring a clinic for new and expectant mothers. >> nobody is going to have a baby right now, are they? >> reporter: mr. and mrs. obama seemed to relish the moment. later, an emotional journey. the first family traveled to ghana's coast to explore a

message? >> you saw the reaction in savannah's piece from ghana, treated like a native son and he has a personal story of african roots because of his father. it is also a message that an american president has always wanted to send about the level of corruption in a lot of these african nations in the governments at a time when america is pledging an unprecedented amount of aid to affcuruand combat illiteracy and some of it was certain lestarted under president bush at historic levels and continue and taken to new heights under this president. >> big week coming up and that gets started tomorrow with the confirmation hearing of nominee sonia sotomayor. she is expected to be confirmed but it will take several days, will we see stumbling along the way here? >> make the case that she's an activist judge whether it's on the case out of new haven where

the chief plaintiff will be called as a witness by the judiciary committee or others that will press her on her views and whether she has an activist past. certainly within the white house there is a high degree of confidence that this will go along without a whole lot of controversy and then confirmed easily. >> i want to switch gears "the new york times" is reporting that dick cheney withheld important information about a counterterrorism program both from the cia from the last eight years and now eric holder is saying he may launch a probe into the administration's torture policies for the obama administration? >> the legacy of the bush/cheney era still very much with us in this government and this administration. if the attorney general moves forward, something that seems to be at odds with what the president wanted by putting all this torture business behind them, that would be striking. with regard to former vice president cheney, according to their report in "the new york

times" he ordered the congress not be in charge of this covert program and panetta stopped the program when he learned about it. that's when it started this real fight on capitol hill gone public where they said there was a program they were not told about in 2001. a lot more questions about this when they go forward. >> what else do you have on the program, dave snud. >> john mccain and also the future of the republican party and the future for sarah palin, his former running mate, also senator chuck schumer from new york to talk about all those issues, as well, including judge sonia sotomayor. >> david gregory, thank you so much. now, let's get a check of the morning's top stories from peter alexander. >> good morning to you and good morning to you at home. hundreds of relatives showed up saturday at a chicago area cemetery to give police information about their loved ones burial plots.

investigators exhumed one grave at the historically black burr oak cemetery where four former workers are now accused of digging up at least 300 graves to resell plot. authorities say making their job that much tougher the fact that there are no maps for large sections of that cemetery. nearly 5,000 people packed a coliseum in southern mississippi on saturday for the funeral of former nfl quarterback steve mcnair. the former tennessee titan and quarterback was remembered for his toughness on the field and his off-field generosity. the 36-year-old was shot and killed last wednesday by his 20-year-old girlfriend who then killed herself. she's the size of a stuffed animal, but a whole heck of a lot cuter. this is a 4 5-day-old panda cup from thailand. just opened her eyes up for the first time. she doesn't have a name, but sure to be a star at the zoo where her mama is back on display after giving birth. she is going to be 200 pounds a

they're questioning two people of interest in the killing of a couple that had adopted a dozen, more than a dozen, many with special needs. byrd and melanie billings were killed at home thursday as some of the children were sleeping. investigators have also impounded the red van that they believe was caught on camera at the crime scene. the couple had 16 children in all. they're said to be staying with relatives this morning. other news now, search teams are looking for three people believed to have been married by a mudslide in utah. authorities fear a mother and her two children may have been killed after the slide destroyed their home in logan. 15 homes were evacuated after an irrigation canal collapsed, possibly causing that slide. nasa's second attempt to launch the space shuttle "endeavour" into orbit will hopefully happen tonight. saturday's launch was scrubbed because of bad weather and lightning in the area. "endeavour" is head unded to th

international space station. the class action lawsuit was filed by an african-american mother who said her four children were turned away at the valley swim club because of the color of their skin. the club has apologized saying they simply couldn't handle the size of the crowd. state regulators are now investigating. and, finally, she may not be old enough to drive, but a 15-year-old california girl has become the youngest african-american female pilot to fly across the country. kimberly landed a single engine plane saturday with one of the famed airman by her side. kimberly's trip took 13 days to complete with a little turbulence along the way. next on her flight list, doing it all by herself, going solo. now back to lester and jenna. she doesn't want to be a pilot at all, she wants to be a heart surgeon. she has a big career ahead of

>> and, dennis, you were on your way home when michelle called you to tell you what's going on. what was your first reaction to this your 2-year-old was missing, what was your reaction here? >> i was hoping she didn't fall down the hill towards the highway. >> you guys, if natalie's not comfortable there, she can walk around. i don't want her to be upset. it's only her national tv debut. michelle, you decided to call some neighbors to help you guys with your search. when did you decide if was absolutely necessary for you to call law enforcement officials to come help snout. >> i was looking for about 20 minutes by myself and the other kids finally jumped in and their went ahead and started walking down the neighborhood road and everyone just started looking with us. we must have picked up, i don't know, probably close to 50, 100 people looking and then we still

couldn't find her, 45 minutes into the search i went ahead and decided, had dennises tell me go ahead and call the cops. >> you had cops there, firefighters there, all your neighbors looking, you and dennis were looking but it was copper, the only comfortable one right here that looks like he'll take a nap, that actually found natalie. >> yes. we even had the canine unit here and they were fixing to call the medivac helicopter, too, in case she had fallen in the woods. >> where was natalie after all this. where did copper end up finding natalie? >> we found her in the washer and dryer and she was in the drawers underneath. they have, what do they call them, dennis? >> the pedestals. >> when she went to hide underneath there she fell asleep, right? >> yes. she woke up in a daze and sweet

because it gets hot when you're stuck in a drawer. >> there's a whole house full of people and she has no idea what's going on. what was her reaction to all of this? >> she just walked out and when we said, where have you been? she told us all these people and all she could say was, i'm sorry. >> she wanted some kudos to be the best hide and seeker ever. how is she doing now? was she traumatized by any of this? >> no, she's her same little wandering little girl there. >> she's doing okay. >> nothing's phased her. >> well, at 2 you pretty much hope -- i do assume hide and seek is now banned from your household, is that what i understand? >> absolutely. absolutely. it hasn't been the first time it was banned, either. >> this will be the last time. it's definitely done, correct, you guys? >> oh, gone. no. >> definitely.

and the fact that it's easy to disagree about what you want to decide to eat. >> cynthia, we heard a little bit in that tape about eventually one part of the couple, one half of the couple becomes the food cop, the food police. what's going on there and how do you deal with that? >> you know, in my experience, food cops aren't out to be controlling bullies, they feel they're saving their partner's life. they feel that's their job. it always backfires. you can't force your partner to be ready before they're ready. you have to let go. the best thing you can do is ease up a bit because they're going to start resenting you and maybe sneaking food behind your back and it's never going to work. >> sometimes food is a gesture of love. one half of the partner who wants to shower you with food to show you love and affection. >> i have experienced this myself. mom and grandma showed you love with food and you passed that on. i recommend a no food gift

policy whether it's special occasions or just because. you have to talk about alternatives. for example, i have been married for a long time and i have to let my husband know i feel a lot more loved and supported when he gives me a back rub or does the laundry or just listens instead of bringing home chocolate. >> no chocolate around valentine's day in your household. janet, if a loved one is showering you with food, maybe there's some other issues going on there? >> as cynthia said, communication is key and as the tape showed, cupicals fight about anything, but with conflict it's an opportunity to talk about what your goals are and motivation and what pathways you can go to really achieve a healthier marriage and healthier eating patterns. >> cynthia, how common do we see sabotage at work when one member of the couple is trying to lose weight and the other is trying to do them in by putting temptation out. >> number one reason is insecurity. you find your partner becoming more attractive to other people

and you may knowingly or unknowingly start bringing home krispy kreme donuts or not about losing your partner in crime because you're eating with that person. you don't want them to change because you don't want to change. that requires the communication because this is one that can really interfere with a marriage and start building up a lot of resentment. they may not even know they're doing it or they may not understand why they're doing it. >> how do you deal with it when you have jealousy at work? >> internal resentment is a cue for you of some external conflict. just being aware and really separating from what you're feeling to what you're thinking. >> forget about the two of you, when it comes down to feeding children and pets, sometimes that can be a source of disagreement, too. >> if you have kids and pets, ask you to feed them. the key is to anticipate what you need to do and maybe together you can decide what you'll feed them and what you're going to spend, novel idea, go shopping together and figure it

out. >> you'll find compromise here. >> cynthia, what other issues does that bring up? >> some people think you are what you eat and others think it is in your genetics. when two people like that fall in love they are bound for conflict when they bring new members into the family or have pets. you have to come to a middle ground that you can agree with and make peace with. >> janet, food sometimes is easy to fight about, but sometimes is it masking a bigger issue in a relationship? >> couples can fight about anything, but take the time to work it out and spend time not at meal time to really identify what the plan of action needs to be so that you can have a healthy, thriving relationship that's just not centered around conflicts around food. >> good discussion, nice to have both of you this morning, appreciate it. a new airline just for pets. but first, these messages. a real onion...there's a real onion in my onion strip.
