thought she had been discharged from the hospital, but hospital officials called her home and said she had left with an ivy in her arm. she said that was not true. when the officers to enter the door, the dog ran out. her husband came out to get it and ended up in a scuffle with police. she said it escalated when officers busted through the back door. police said that he picked up a chair, and that is what led to the >> shooting> at one point, the suspect picked up a wooden dining room chair, raise it up over an officer, who was on the floor beneath him. he was about to strike the officer. the other officer who was there thought that he was in imminent danger, fired his duty weapon, striking the subject. >> she was taken back to the hospital and later released. officers received minor injuries. the officer who discharged his weapon is now on administrative

duty during this investigation. >> we are learning more tonight about the grandmother whose body was found inside a freezer in and around a county. the case sheds new light on how the state handles and reported deaths. officials -- how the state handles unreported deaths. >> reporting a death is mandatory under a hospital setting. police say emt's have reporting requirements, but under current state law, individuals do not have to report a death. >> she was a great woman, the best grandmother you could ask for. >> last weekend, pastured hoover got a call telling him that his grandmother had passed in her sleep. he went to the country club apartments to see her, but she was not in her room. he was told to look in the freezer, and he found his grandmother in a freezer under a beach blanket.

>> family members had actually placed the body in a freezer. >> patrick says he asked why she put her mother in the freezer instead of calling police. he says she told him that she made her promise to keep her away from everybody. family members say doris never fully recovered from a heart attack. >> it was hard for all of us to see her that way. she was such a good person. >> maryland law does not require individuals to report it does. in 1999, while visiting her father, your marshall died from an overdose of cough medicine. no physician reported the incident. her father married her in the

backyard -- her father buries her. >> a health professional or police officer, whatever, they have a reporting process that they have to do. it is an individual, there is really no reporting process. >> although highly unusual, no law was broken by storing her in a freezer. the state medical examiner will determine if any other laws were broken. >> this investigation is classified as a suspicious death. we are working to make a determination on what the manner of death is. >> police said an autopsy was scheduled today, but results on in. family members expect autopsy results to be available by the end of this week. >> turns out it was not carbon monoxide that forced evacuations at the courthouse east building downtown earlier today. according to an internal memo, it was a sulfuric acid leak. firefighters responded around 9:00 this morning.

before they can receive credit. the problem mostly persist at community colleges. the university of maryland says 15 percent of freshmen are forced to take these classes. state education officials said they do not believe any changes need to be made to the state's math standards or curriculum. >> two days after attending the funeral of his close friend, the ravens wide receiver has reportedly decided to retire from the nfl. the news comes as a complete surprise to the ravens, since he first shared his decision with a website that shares and office building with his agent. according to the website, mason has decided to retire immediately from the nfl. mason did not return our calls late this afternoon. the raven's head coach and general manager of both remain on vacation. the raven senior vice president said in a release just moments ago that mason has not file

paperwork to retire from the nfl. paperwork that players retiring must file with the league office. mason did approach the team in the off-season about a longer- term contract but did not receive a new deal. in light of the tragic death of his close friend, it does not seem out of character for the 35-year-old mason to consider life decisions, but it does seem out of character for him to release the news on the website unaffiliated with either the team won the nfl. the retirement leave already experienced receiving corps without its most productive receiver over the past four seasons. more than just two weeks after saying he felt close to a new deal with the ravens, and linebacker has only two days left to decide to take or leave the team's best offer on the table. after wednesday, players like him cannot negotiate for a long- term deal until after the season. sources close to the general manager indicate he has likely made his final offer. he played in his third pro bowl last season, led his team.

as a franchise player, he will make more than $10 million, but without a long-term deal in place, he would almost certainly skipped training camp for a second straight year, which would have a bigger impact since the ravens have a new defensive coordinator this year. year after illness kept him out of the all-star game, the san francisco giants pitcher will make his first start in tomorrow night's all-star game. he does not have a bonus clause in his contract for making the all-star game. his counterpart does have on this clause. he will make an extra $125,000 for making the team and will start for the american league. adam jones, by the way, it's of $25,000 for making it to his first all-star game. forget bonuses, he considers the experience quite thrilling. >> i think tomorrow, the big advantage will be just getting to the field, and after that, just getting on the field.
