9:08 am
to know about merging your bank accounts? "today's" financial editor jean chatzky has always the answers. she writes about marriage and money in this mon's "more" magazine. did you shed a little tear? >> just a little. >> as somebody who just tied the knot you know all about this. >> absolutely. >> how important is it for them to be on the same page financially? >> i think this is a big myth. people think that just because they married somebody they're all of a sudden going to become the same person. what attracted you to each other are chances are the things that are going to continue to exist in your life. and so if you had different money personalities or different money goals going in, you're going to continue to have those. the important thing is just to communicate about them so they don't start to cause problems. >> therapists tell us the number one argument is money in a marriage. and of course, the basic thing is about separate or joint checking accounts. how do you determine what's best for you? >> you know there are some people out there who will tell you that a marriage is not fully merged or fully trusting unless
9:09 am
the money is commingled completely. i totally disagree. i think the system that works best is a yours, mine and ours bank account system, where we've got one account for the house that covers everything that we do together, but she still has some money of her own. he still has some money of his own, so that you can make decisions independently. >> now, let's say you have separate accounts. does that change how you would file taxes or anything like that? >> not necessarily. it really, you can file separately. you can file jointly, and it will depend on your economic situation. >> another big argument, household bills. when you're starting off, what's the best way to set that up? >> if everything is coming from that household account, the way i like to do it is to figure out what your household expenses are. if you are both working, figure out what equal percentage of your salaries you need to cover that amount for the house. and then everything else can stay in the joint -- in the separate accounts. you shouldn't put one person in charge of doing all the bills all the time.
9:10 am
because, whether it's the man or whether it's the woman, it puts the other spouse at a disadvantage. if something happens to that primary bill payer, the other person is going to be at a total loss. so even though one person is likely to take on these things more often, make sure that once or twice a year you just switch it up so the other person actually knows what they're doing. >> all right. so in honor of leigh and nick, let's look at some tips for newlyweds. first of all you say very important, schedule financial dates. >> once a week at a time when you know you are not going to be cranky. after your favorite television show just sit down and talk about whatever is going on in your financial life. if there's a big expense that has come up, with you know something else is coming down the pike, so get it out there, air it and be done with it. >> also you say know what pushes your buttons. >> so i am guilty of this. talking about money can make me a little cranky and a little crazy, it's no accident that i do what i do for a living. you have to know what is going to make you go off the deep end, so that your spouse and you can deal with it together.
9:11 am
>> and you say, know your -- i'm sorry, dream out loud. >> right. we talk about setting goals, financially, and how important that is. because only the people who actually have goals can achieve their goals because they know where they're going. it's just another word for dreaming. you've got to know what you want this year, in five years, in ten years. that's the fun part. talk about what you want together, and then just assign some numbers so you know how long it's going to take you to get there. >> and you say under no circumstances keep financial secrets. >> absolutely not. that's what causes marriages to crater. >> all right. jean chatzky, thanks so much. >> sure. >> and still ahead, looking good on your big day. we've got some wedding-day makeup tips. up next we're going to head uptown to the plaza hotel where the party's just about to get started. customer, you get to use any of our concierge claim centers. so i can just drop off my car and you'll take care of everything? yep, even the rental. what if i'm stuck at the office? if you can't come to us, we'll come to you in one of our immediate response vehicles!
