live, local, late breaking. this is wbal-tv news in ht. >> it was like a movie. he walked up to the driver and just let loose. two baltimore police officers are recovering after a suspect opened fire while being taken into custody. that is our big story. i am kate amara.

the situation erupted just before 11:00 this morning. the suspect was also hit. he is in shock and trauma. that is where we find kim dacey. >> one police officer has been released. the other is in good condition after surgery. the suspect is also in stable condition here at shock trauma. all three are expected to be ok. the police commissioner is calling the suspect a maniac and the police officers he rose. >> he started shooting and people started running. we laid down on the floor and called on jesus. >> issue out disrupted the west of corn neighborhood around 11:00 this morning. the 34-year-old man was involved in domestic disputes in the north and west of the city. one officer was with the victim in that incident. the suspect returned and fired

on the officer. >> the officer got to cover and immediately broadcast a description of the suspect. the suspect fled in the vehicle. >> before the 4-year-old officer -- 844-year-old officer found the suspect. the suspect got out of the car and ambushed the officer. >> he fired several shots through the driver's side of the police vehicle, striking the officer while he was still in the car. our officer was able to get out on the passenger side of the car. he engaged a suspect in a gunbattle. >> the suspect was shot in the leg. >> the officer took solace to the chest and arms. all three were rushed to shock trauma. other officers and police

commissioner spent the day they're hoping for the best. >> i thank god for their heroism. if our men were not there to stop this maniac, who knows what he would've done to innocent people on the street? >> police say a litany of charges will be forthcoming for the suspect. we will have the latest on this story tonight at 11:00. kim dacey 4 wbal-tv 11 news. the baltimore mayor has released a statement about the shooting. she says the incident is a tragic reminder that we must treat our city of illegal guns. i thank god that our brave police officers are in stable condition. i encourage everyone to pray for the recovery. we expect to hear later -- more later from the mayor tonight. according to baltimore county fire department, the fire started around 8:30 p.m. last night at the warehouse in essex. neighbors reported hearing

explosions as the fire spread through the building. >> we saw the smoke. we were coming from the mall. the closer we got, we realized it is getting close to our house. when we got here, we saw the flames shooting about 100 feet in the air. >> one person was injured. the facility is a complete loss. there is no word on the water main burst. it sent water rushing into three homes. the service has been shut off to 22 homes in the area. this is the second water main break in the area in three months. it is blamed on an aging infrastructure. >> the efforts to fix another water main means some residents will have to use less water. mandatory restrictions are in effect for northwestern baltimore city and baltimore county. that means no watering lawns, and a washing cars -- and no

washing cars. restaurants are prohibited from serving water unless it is requested. the managers say about 150,000 people are impacted. manic -- residents to the south may experience low water pressure. the nation is mourning the loss of walter cronkite. he gave up his television see years ago, but still holds a special place for many americans. we have the story from washington. >> it should not come as any surprise that his death is front-page news. to many americans, he was the news. >> you felt like you could tune in to him and he would tell you the truth. >> at the news museum in washington, a quickly-arranged exhibit honored the legendary anchorman. visitors remember him and his stories. >> he was great when president kennedy was killed.

the red line metro service should be up and running again in about an hour. the ntsb suspended service to run tests after the deadly crash last month. the crash killed nine people, including the operator. 70 other people were injured. investigators believe a trailer -- if though you're in the signaling system led to the crash. the exact cause is not known. a fire in prince george's county is being ruled an accident. fire crews responded around 5:15 p.m. yesterday. investigators say the father left food cooking on the stove. his sons were inside the apartment at the time. the 5-year-old died a short time later at the hospital. the 7-year-old is in critical condition. the father is also recovering from injuries he received while trying to rescue his children.

here is your weather forecast with john collins. >> here is a check on the radar. there are not many clouds over us. most of them are off to the northwest. there is some shower activity in pennsylvania north of pittsburgh. the rain is not a big factor in the weather today. there is sunshine. the humidity went down. that gave us a pleasant day.

the high temperature was 84 at the airport and the inner harbor. 88 would be the typical high and more humid. it was almost too perfect to be true. it will probably be colder tomorrow morning. there is no precipitation. things are dry for the month of july. we're beginning to use up some of the excess we got in the spring. we have used up half of that and the last month because of the lack of rain. ñrit is 81 on the west side of e bay. it is a little cooler in the mountains to the west because of the cloud cover. the front that went through overnight has almost stalled off shore. it is going to be a feature in the weathercock the coast for the next few days. -- it is going to be a feature in the weather off the coast for

the next few days. we will get cooler air from the south. the chances of rain could come back. it will not be tonight or tomorrow. it will be clear tonight and cool. there will be light wind from the north and northwest. it will be partly cloudy tomorrow. it will be pleasant because of the low humidity. the high temperature range will be 83 to 87. the wind will be no. 2 nw. the bay water temperatures are in the upper 70's. tomorrow will be a good day in ocean city. the high temperature will be about 82. it will be breezy on monday. the front will help to generate a chance of rain.

there will be high temperatures in the upper 70's. there are a few showers to the northwest. those will dry up overnight. tomorrow evening, there may be clouds out west with a few showers. it will stay dry here. on monday, we do see more rain developing in the forecast. there will be a chance of it. our seven-day forecast has a high temperature at 85 tomorrow. the humidity will begin to rise next week. there is a chance of rain almost every day next week. it is then on and off again kind of thing. i will leave wednesday dry. keep your fingers crossed. on thursday, friday, and saturday, there is a chance of scattered storms. it is time for sports.
