we saw some really strong storms last night. huge hail around the timonium area. this morning things are still active. really in southern maryland and around the ocean city area. let's take a full look at h.d. doppler. still a massive showers and storms. none of them are severe but strong storms just south of annapolis and around ocean city. let's switch our focus and look at the severe storms last night that rolled through. whenever you see purple on h.d. doppler, that's intense. one little section just to our west around frederick and the other to the north around timonium. today partly cloudy, 87 to 92. out ahead of that front, the humidity. and the front's not through here yet. that's why we're remaining unsettled. i know with those storms that we have some reciprocal effects with traffic. what's the scoop? >> the cleanup is going to probably last for a while. we're dealing with downed trees in many locations. morgan station at route 99. we have lanes closed with a downed tree there. also eastbound i-70 at 32 we

have an accident with a single vehicle involved if you're heading out in reisterstown, a downed tree with lanes closed. also a problem at cranbrook and york. at park heights and green spring valley, right in stevenson, we had some downed wires to report. so a busy ride this morning. let's check on the major roads. the beltway at baltimore national pike, west side. so far looking pretty good. we're also moving quite well on the north side. no problems to report on the j.f.x. this morning. 895 approaching the harbor tunnel. we'll keep you posted on those problems this morning. that's the latest on traffic pulse 11. stan and mindy, back to you. >> good morning. thank you. a dozen people are shot when gunfire erupts. >> among those injured, a pregnant woman and child. jennifer franciotti has the latest. >> good morning. police tell 11 news the shooting happened just before 9:00 last nights in the 2600 block of ashland avenue. they say there was some sort of a cookout or a gathering when someone walked into the crowd and started firing.

at last count there are a dozen victims. the injuries range from shots to the shoulder, to the back, to the arms. we're told mostly leg wounds. among the victims a pregnant woman and a 2-year-old child. >> a female sustained a gunshot wound to the left arm. we also had a pregnant young lady who was shot as well. she sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. all of the injuries sustained by the victims at this point appear to be nonlife-threatening. >> there's no update on the conditions of the victims. we do know police are still looking for a suspect in this case. live downtown, jennifer franciotti. wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you. a family of an 11-year-old girl is coming to terms with her death this morning. maryland natural resources police say they recovered the girl's body early yesterday morning in the sassafras river in kent county. rescue crews are been searching for her since friday when she fell off a boat into the river. sky team 11 was over the scene last week.

police found the girl's body about a half a mile with a from the accident scene. >> the state fire marshall's office says a 57-year-old woman intentionally set a house on fire, injuring herself and another person inside. the fire broke out just after 10:00 saturday morning at a home on hillman court in aberdeen. investigators say the woman set fire to a sofa in the basement. she suffered burns and smoke inhalation. a 60-year-old man who lives on the first floor was treated for minor burns to his face. the aberdeen police department is now assisting in the investigation. despite promises from the owners, it seems the chronic carbon monoxide problem continues at the cove village apartments in essex. just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon emergency crews were called to the complex once again for reports of c.o. poisoning. at least three people who live in barnacle court were taken to the hospital when dangerous levels of carbon monoxide were discovered in their home. >> we're not exactly sure exactly where it came from. bg&e did come out and shut off and secure the gas to the home.

>> in the last two months fire crews have been called to the complex several times for c.o. scares and several residents have been hospitalized. >> thousands of baltimore county residents are still without power after a line of strong storms last night. you can see the damage done -- done to this neighborhood. for some residents, just one look out the window was all they needed to send them running for shelter. >> pounding rain, hail, banging on the windows. we saw all of these starting to swirl. we went to the bathroom. >> i heard a loud snapping noise. it was real loud. we saw a swoosh going around our house. >> i was really freaked out. it was really frightening. >> so far there's no word of any tornadoes touching down in the area. you can see more dramatic images of the storm damage on the homepage of our website,

spending o would only save a modest $2 billion over the next 10 years, but the white house is hopeful a bill will still get done. >> the president believes we're making progress. and as long as we're making process, that's a very good sign. >> we don't want the process to bog down. we want to keep moving forward. and i believe we will. >> well, maryland will hold a swine flu summit in annapolis today. state health official and school leaders will discuss immunization, surveillance and reporting of the virus. leaders will discuss emergency preparedness. this after state health officials announced maryland's fourth swine flu death last week. well, goodbye, sarah palin. former alaska governor sarah palin said goodbye and washington's lieutenant governor shawn parnell took the governor's oath of office sunday. palin announced her resignation earlier this month pledging to continue to fight for alaska. in a speech palin said part of her reason for leaving was to avoid the unproductive typical politics. that brings to us our "watercooler question of the day."

getting some strong storms as well. there's a little patch of showers near gaithersburg and d.c. that's headed in our general direction. so today unsettled. 40% chance of scattered showers and storms statewide. we're going to get up to about 88 degrees in central maryland today. 85 for ocean city. we're going to remain quite humid tonight at 66 to only 70. scattered thunderstorms a possibility. there's a cold front to our west. it is slowly approaching the i-95 corridor where it's going to stall out tonight. more in your forecast coming up. >> thank you. "covering the nation" this morning, just a horrific story out of san antonio, texas where a woman decapitated her own newborn baby. they say the woman used a steak knife to decapitate her 3 1/2 week old son. investigators say the woman stabbed herself in the stomach and chest after admitting to what she did. she told is police the devil made her do it. according to police the child's aunt, grandmother and two other small children were in the home when the crime was committed.

family and friends are mourning the loss i've world champion box eastern humanitarian. vernon forest was shot and killed late saturday night in atlanta. his manager says forest stopped at a gas station to put air in his tire. one person helped hip. and just as he was about to give that person money for their help, police say several robbers snatched his wallet. forest gave chase, but after he gave up he was shot several times and killed. >> eight people, including four children under the age of 10 were killed in a horrible crash in new york. authorities say a family a minivan was going the wrong way on a parkway in westchester county on sunday when it crashed into two vehicles, rolled down an erchg baxment and burst into flames. a 5-year-old child was the only one in the minivan who survived. two people in the car were hospitalized. police say this was the second wrong-way crash on that same highway on sunday. the earlier incident sent five people to the hospital. >> 5:12. coming up, are you or someone you know paying a lot of money

wbaltv.com. it's really impressive. if you were in the midst of those storms, you know how intense they were so what we're dealing with this morning, just that tropical feel to things. we're looking at 75 to begin things downtown. very balmy. 72 at the airport. 72 in easton and st. michaels. 76 in ocean city. dew points, that is a measure of the moisture. anytime we're dealing with upper 60's, we're dealing with a very unsettled air mass with an immense amount of moisture around. that's going to be the case not only today but the entire rest of the week. welcome summer it took us a while to get there this week we're going to be following suit. it looks like 88 our forecast high which is really generally where we should be this time of the year. chance of scattered showers and storms this afternoon. not only in baltimore but statewide. we also have a southerly wind flow that will pull in more heat and humidity from the deep south. so south-southwesterly flow. waves one to two feet. as far as the records go, 101 set as the record high in 1940.

on the july 27, 1962, 52 as the record low. last week in july and we're going to feel like it. 66 to 70 our temperature range. mostly cloudy. still scattered showers and storms. the reason for all of this is the movement of this front. the trough out ahead of us this morning. all of this humid air is serving as a trigger for these showers and storms. front will approach the i-95 corridor. we'll probably be around -- it will probably be around the vicinitiy by early this evening. so front will stall out overnight, leaving us unsettled. then wheel clear out tomorrow, a chance of isolated storms but then yet another front gets through by wednesday. and another approaches the area on friday so all week long we have a chance of late-day showers and storms. we're going to remain in the upper 80's. >> in this morning's "consumer alert," in the down economy many

consumers are beginning to wonder why rent when i can buy? according to the associated press, the mortgage payment for a medium-priced home in 45 metro sears within $221 of the median rent. that's close enough for many people to choose buying other renting and turn the housing market around. when perspective buyers couple their lower costs with low interest rates and add tax incentives, buying becomes more attractive than ever. solo powered public trash compactors are catching on. philadelphia is the latest city to roll it out, putting 500 compactors on the street. big belly senses when the container is near full then uses solar power to squeeze the trash inside to make more room. the city of brotherly love says it can reduce collection trips up to 75%, save almost $1 million a year. other big cities using big belly include boston, chicago, and new york. you pay tax and expect certain services. but if you have a crash on the state road, your taxes may not cover the state's expenses.

look at that story and the rest of the day's business news in the "bloomberg business report." good morning. >> good morning. the u.s., the world's largest economy, may be about to mark its longest losing streak since records began. but it might not be as bad as everyone thought. economists surveyed by bloomberg ahead of a report from the commerce department saying gross domestic product or g.d.p. is an overall measure of economic activity, probably shrank in the second quarter at a pace of 1.5%. that's much better than the drop in g.d.p. in the first few months of the year. economists say this is a sign that trade and government spending. one leading economist tells 11 news, "the recession is in its final hours." the g.d.p. report comes out on friday. now let's get to the markets where we saw a mixed close friday but an increase in home resales which helped the dow complete the two-week rally. we're watching what shares of citigroup do today as well.
