it's a really bad hair day today. i know you don't have to worry about it. but the rest of us -- >> we've been holding all summer. it's finally here in full force. we are going to remain humid almost to the point of tropical humidity all week long. certainly it's very steamy this morning. we are also dealing with the aftermath of some severe weather that rumbled through the area early last evening from about 5:00 to 7:00. strong storm cells especially around the timonium area. this morning the bulk of the showers and storms are on the eastern shore and southern maryland. it looks like that could be the case later this afternoon as well. let's take a look at our current temperatures. we're knit mid 70's. these are the storms that rolled through last night that caused all the heavy wind damage. we saw very large hail associated with that. today, again, the risk for isolated severe storms. i think of late-day storms once we get through this morning batch. it's going to remain hot all week long. >> we're dealing with several problem spots related to the

storm. we have downed trees in many areas. we're also dealing with an accident. we're hearing it's a fatal crash in white marsh. we've updated this location originally thought to be at campbell and honeygo. but, yes it means it's a very busy intersection. lots of police and rescue on the scene amount void that intersection if you can. we have some debris to watch for left over from the storm in cockeysville at cranbook and york. also blocked in the area of stevenson due to downed wires. nicodemus, a downed tree belong -- blocking some lanes. and problems at howard county, morgan station/route 99, downed tree. environment bound 70 at 32 a single-vehicle accident involved there. we're looking at a nice ride as we give you a look at the white marsh area. 95 running smoothly. but, again, white marsh and

honeygo intersection, watch for lanes closed due to a fatal accident. >> thank you. a weekend cookout ends in chaos when a shooter opens fire, injuring 12 people. >> among the injured, a pregnant woman and a young child. 11 news reporter jennifer franciotti joins us live outside city police headquarters with the latest on the story. good morning, jen. >> good morning. police say at this point it looks like all the injuries are nonlife-threatening. this all started just before 9:00 last night when police say a gunman opened fire in the 2600 block of ashland avenue. >> there was a cookout or gathering going on in one of the backyards in the 2600 block of ashland avenue. someone walked into the alley and basically opened fire. >> and when did he, police say a dozen people were injured when officers arrived on the scene, they found 12 people suffer from gunshot wounds, mostly to the legs. some had been shot in the shoulder, arms and back. among the wounded, a pregnant woman and a 2-year-old child.

>> a female sustained a gunshot wound to the left arm. we also had a pregnant young lady who was shot as well. she sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. all of the injuries sustained by the victims at this point appear to be nonlife-threatening. >> and as of last night, police were gathering evidence. they were still interviewing witnesses. at this point they have no description of the suspect, but that is likely to change by later today. reporting live downtown, jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you. police in anne arundel county are searching for the person or persons who broke into a brooklyn heights hair salon, cover it had in racist graffiti, then tried to burn the place down. investigators were called to the heavenly hand salon. officers discovered four swastikas and racist comments aimed we black and asian communities spray painted inside the shop. police say a computer and other equipment was stolen, gasoline poured all over the furniture and floor. the owner tells 11 news she's

confident justice will be served. >> hurts more than your actions on me because what comes around goes -- goes around comes around. i can't wait until they get their back. if the law doesn't get them, god will. >> the owner says someone tried to break in a couple of weeks ago as well. meanwhile, police arrested a man they say was carrying a loaded pistol at anne arundel mall. barns was rested saturday. -- arrested saturday. police were called to the scene after a security guard spotted barns spraypainting his own car. during the investigation a county police officer says barns made threats saying he should just kill everyone. police say a search of bearn as backpack turned up a loaded gun and marijuana, also a loaded shotgun inside his car. >> a year after the government scientist killed himself while under investigation for the anthrax mailings, the justice department says it could soon close the case. according to the associated press several law enforcement officials say the department had planned to close the case last week. government lawyers needed more

time to review evidence. it was the fall of 2001 when the anthrax spores killed five people and sickened 17 others. the white supremacist accused of shooting and killing a security guard at the holocaust museum is expected to face a judge this week. earlier this month the attorney for 89-year old james von brunn told the judge his client was not well enough to appear in court. doctors told prosecutors von brunn would be able to travel to court later in the month. von brunn faces a first degree murder charge in the death of museum guard stephen johns who he allegedly killed adds johns opened the door for him. other guards fired back striking von brunn in the face. >> health care reform continues to top attendance this week on capitol hill. today law makers are back at work, trying to resolve their differences. 11 news reporter tracy potts has more from washington. >> one democratic plan to get everyone to a doctor is so complex, 1,000 pages that lawmakers booked a five-hour briefing today to explain it. republicans say let's go back to the drawing board.

>> we'd like to start over with a genuine bipartisan approach. >> the senate has given up on reform by summer break. but on the other side of the capital, nancy pelosi remains confident. >> when i take this bill to the floor, it will win. >> some of her fellow democrats right-hand so sure. >> if she had the votes to pass it. i don't believe so next week. i think the american people want to take a closer look at this legislation. >> pelosi wants to push drug and insurance companies harder to cut costs. one big sticking point in the house is to whether to offer an government insurance plan the public -- public option. instead of taxing the rich, so the-called 40,000 policy carried by goldman sachs. the white house says if that keeps the burden off the middle class, president obama is willing to listen. >> if it meets that test, then he'll certainly give it consideration. >> this week the president makes two trips to push health reform

>> good morning. we're starting out at 75 degrees. incredibly humid. kind of a tropical air mass ahead of a front that is still to our west. already an active h.d. doppler on the heels of some severe weather that broke out last night. the most intense activity on the delmarva. there's some strong cells in southern maryland, south of annapolis. it looks like baltimore is

getting in on the action right now, too, with a little light shower activity. around ocean city some strong storms as well. nothing severe yet. we could see isolated severe cells later this afternoon. we're going to remain unsettled. the trigger mechanism for those storms later today would likely be the movement of that front that's going to stall out tonight. 88, central maryland. going to be a hot one and stay a hot one all week long. more on your return to the summer coming up in a little bit. >> in this morning's "mack lert" pregnant women who survive cancer as a child may need to be monitored closely for preterm birth. researchers in the netherlands studied the pregnancies. they found women treated with radiation directly to the abdomen were more likely to deliver early, were also at a greater risk for hemorrhaging after delivery. older americans who have survived cancer seem to have poor health habits. that's according to a new study.

available? call 866-ride-mta for schedule information. with the m.t.a. transit team, i'm kurt kronke. now back to sandra shaw. >> good morning. probably a good idea today to take the umbrella just in case. already a wet morning commute for people who live on the dell dell -- delmarva peninsula. we saw more intense showers and storms earlier this morning. just around baltimore, on the western side of the city, a little bit of light rain right now as this last batch gets through here. a little bit of a break. very humid today. then another round of showers and storms is likely this afternoon. early yesterday evening, take a look. purple on h.d. doppler and rotation actually detected. you see this cell coming through here. a little hook. that's associated with very high winds. we also saw very large hail. no tornado warning was issued but we saw some i severe weather and dealing with the aftermath.

very unsettled this week. we're humid as a result. 75 downtown. 72 at the airport. it looks like we're starting the day at 76 degrees. across the board, upper 60's to even low 70's. the dew point. that's a july reading. that's an august reading. we are welcoming summer in full force this week. we've managed to evade it pretty much all year long until now it looks like a high of 88 degrees with the humidity, making it feel a lot worse than that out there. a good chance at about 40% of some scattered showers and storms this afternoon. some isolated strong storms as a front which is still stalled out to our west. on the day today, you'll have to dodge those showers and storms later. winds 10 to 15 knots. 101, we have the potential to reach triple digits this time of the year. that was the high in 1940. in contrast, we dipped down to 52 in 1962 on this date. but nowhere near that tonight for sure. 66 to 70 degrees. keeping all the heat and

humidity around with the mostly cloudy skies. a chance of scattered showers and storms as well tonight. and the reason for that, the front will approach us today and stall out right over our area overnight tonight so it's not going to be through here until tomorrow. then we'll have a brief break tomorrow. and then as you see in the seven-day forecast, we'll bring back a very good chance of scattered showers and storms each and every afternoon. 40% and 50% wednesday and thursday. the other thing of note on the seven-day forecast, the humidity stay where's it is. and the temperatures are going to remain constant, too. in the upper 80's, maybe even some lower 90's. in fact, yesterday we did top out at 90. >> thank you. a teen is not letting her physical limitations keep her down. >> a quadruple amputee whose dream trip to the julliard school of dance is coming true. >> she has never considered herself handicapped. >> i am in a wheelchair but it's not stopping me. >> when she was 2 years old, she

caught a deadly bacterial infection. doctors were forced to amputate her arms and legs. >> when she opened her eyes and asked if she could go back to her room to watch "lion king," i'm like, she's still kiara, just a little bit shorter. >> this 16-year-old is not short on her passion for dancing. she choreographs her own routines, incorporating her favorite flips and hand stands. here how her dance teachers describe kiara in motion. >> she said when she dances, she can see her arms and legs, hands and legs. think that's the best way to describe it. >> it was not what i expected. >> the student internship is with a group called dream factory. the organization helps critically and chronically ill children fulfill their

fantasies. kiara's life-long dream is a trip to the dance school julliard in new york city. >> i wanted her to have something really special. ed a feeling she was holding out on me. i pressed her. she said, ok, i want to dance at julliard. >> it's a miracle, honestly. just as a dancer being able to go there, it helps me grow stronger. >> the trip may grow her love for dance but the seed's already been planted. >> what an amazing story. well, kiara and her family leave nor new york city tomorrow during her week at julliard. we'll get a tour, sit in on classes and perform for the students. a wildlife center in virginia took three bald eagles under its wing and now they're taking flight. the wildlife center of virginia has been caring for the birds for more than a month now for injuries that include fractured wings, puncture wounds and damaged feathers.
