>> we want to get an update on a developing story from baltimore city. a woman was killed around 3:15 this afternoon after an accident near north calhoun and lexington street in west baltimore. john sherman is following the story. he is live from the scene with the late breaking details. >> this is the intersection where the accident took place, and off to the left is where the suspect vehicle ended up, almost 50 or 60 yards away from the accident. police said that car had just been involved in a carjacking and was spotted by members of the regional of a task force. the pursuit was called off because the car was behaving to radically. >> officers were not pursuing the car at the time of the crash. they got the alert that there was an armed carjacking, but based on the way the driver reacted when he saw the police, he drove erratically and out of

control. they broke it off, but he continued on, and it ended in a fatal collision. >> this is what was left behind when that in affinity that was being pursued by the police smashed into of car being driven by a woman. they estimate it was going 80- 130 miles an hour just before the impact. the woman's car flipped several times. the suspect was originally spotted near m.l. k and mulberry street. the suspect has minor injuries and is in custody. the woman who randomly drove into this is dead. >> center barbara mikulski was one of the eight votes for just sotomayor it this afternoon. she sent -- she returned to capitol hill after breaking her ankle two weeks ago. melissa carlson joins us with more. >> she spent most of our time

about. $4 billion is in the pipeline for maryland. yours ask us to look at how many jobs have been created from those funds. david, what did you find out? >> according to figures just released by the o'malley administration, recover money has created 2246 new jobs, prompting some to say, why not more? although $4 billion in the pipeline, the state has only received one-third of that amount. >> this is one of the shuttle ready projects -- shovel-ready projects. >> jason believes the money is working. >> the father of three had been unemployed until this job recently came through. he and at least 20 others on this project are bringing home a paycheck instead of collecting

unemployment. still, many question whether the stimulus money is actually helping. we asked an adjunct professor of finance at johns hopkins to review stimulus money tracking data provided by the o'malley administration. >> it is helping the maryland economy. though we still have unemployment rising, it is rising at a reduced rate. >> as of july 31, a stimulus funds helped create to thousand 264 jobs in maryland. the problem is, the number of new unemployment claims as of july 25 is much greater, at 5023. >> even with 5000 new claims, the politicians and the government will argue that it would have been 10,000 without the stimulus. >> state officials say there were 115 highway projects. 97 are open for bids. 73 have been given notice to proceed, and 29 is under -- are under construction.

money to go to college. not stimulus money, it all comes from private donations. >> this story really shows that despite what is going on in the economy, miracles continue to happen. students who normally would not be able to go to universities gotowson are now being given the chance to pursue their dreams, thanks to some very special dollars and an organization. >> thursday afternoon there were plenty of reasons to celebrate at a luncheon for that central scholarship bureaus anniversary. these 200 students are splitting $1 million in grants and interest-free loans, thanks to the bureau. >> it would not be for these organizations, i would not be able to go at all. >> zachary says his parents have been working double shifts to cover his education, and thanks to his grants, he will be able to graduate. >> between that and the other
