street closed between center street and reid street all weekend. so be aware of that. speed crenscrers show everything is moving censors show everything is moving just fine. drive times this morning the joiter loop of the beltway 11 minutes. 95 southbound between the beltway en route to the city 10 minutes there. 95 southbound between the 895 harbor tunnel thruway and the fort mchenry toll plaza is five minutes, so we are looking great. that's the latest on traffic pulse 11. stan and mindy? >> thank you. new this morning city police officer is crfercroing from injuries after being struck by a car in east baltimore. >> officers were called to the scene just before midnight the 3,000 block of cavalry street reports an officer and woman were struck. the woman who was a passenger was dragged when she tried to

get out of the vehicle. the woman was taken to hopkins for a treatment. >> police discovered a carjacking. >> and within moments they became witness to a deadly crash as the suspect tried to flee. jennifer franciotti joins us live from city police headquarters with more on this tragic story. >> police say the suspect was traveling at a very high rate of speed when he hit a nissan, caused it to flip over several times, killing the woman inside. this all unfolded about 3:00 p.m. when the alleged carjacker was spotted at mlk and mulberry. police went after the vehicle but they called off the pursuit for safety reasons. the suspect continued on and collided with the nissan. that car flipped and was knocked more than 60 feet from the intersection. witnesses describe what happened. >> flipped several times then snashed up against the wall. sounded horrible.

it just a big crash. just like that. i mean, i didn't even get a chance to blink my eyes. >> it was real loud. it was like a boom, loud. >> now the victim was taken to shock trauma where she was later pronounced dead. suspect also taken to shock trauma but he suffered only minor injuries. jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you, jen. meanwhile until baltimore county a 7-year-old is being treated this morning for injuries after being struck by a car along dun dolph road. the child was hit around 7:30 at the intersection of ray button and j.d. avenue. the child's identity has not been released. no word on the child's condition this morning. >> baltimore city police have a pair of multiple shootings on their hands the first happened around 11:30 last night bringing investigators to find one victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the back and foot and moments later they found two other victims that

had been wounded in the legs. one was taken to bay view and the other to hopkins and under an hour later police were called to the scene of another double shooting and police found two men shot one in the face the other in the foot in the 200 block of dallas court. no word a suspect or motive in either of these multiple shootings. >> and animal control is investigating animal abuse. a warning this could be very disturbing. a group of kids found this kitten and tortured her hitting her with rocks and setting her on fair to twice. it wasn't until a week later that the injured cat was able to be located and treated by vets. >> it says a lot about her. she's a very strong kitten and had the will to live and make it through it. and she hung there in there. >> the cats are so vulnerable because there's so many to be streets.

four cats have been tortured and killed. this is the fifth cat. >> beautiful little kitten. the rescue group recycled love will take over the kitten's care and she is counterly on painkillers and they think she will recover as long as she can fight off infection. >> this morning we're expecting jobs news out of washington. the labor department will tell us how many workers got slapped with pink slips during the month of july and will signal whether hireing is on the rise. brook hart has more from washington. >> president obama looked like he was campaigning in virginia last night, and he was. not just for the democrats for governor but for his handling of the economy. >> we're losing jobs at half the rate we were at the beginning of this year. >> reports show americans are still losing jobs but not as fast. >> i think we're going to be on an improving track.

after we only hit 78 with all the clouds around. we're seeing a clearing trend. high pressure that's centered takeover upper midwest. our winds today are going to be out of the northwest, and that's going to help keep us quite pleasant with lower-than-normal dew points and fresh air over us in august. 60 out at the airport and low 60's on the eastern shore and only in the mid 60's in york, pennsylvania. so taking the statewide tour. almost a spring-like day out there. plenty of blue in the skies. here in baltimore up to 85 as is typical around the bay today but absolutely nice day for you this friday. one of the nicest we've seen so far this summer. surf temperature has dropped to 69 but temperature will be rising by the second half of this weekend. balmy in the waters, 71 in the

harbor. and winds on the chesapeake at 10 knots. the record for this date is 105 set back in 1918, record low set in 2004, and both are secure for yet another year. partly cloudy skies , 64-67 for a milder overnight low. move offshore tomorrow, and that will allow a front from our south to re-emerge as a warm front. a warm front is not really good in august because it's going to allow a deep high pressure ridge to form over the entire area so by sunday triple h threat, hazy, hot and humid. the combination of the heat and humidity the heat index will feel more like the low 100's. sunday more of the same. may be heat advisories issued.

rampage at the fitness club. and mourners where george sadini wounded many and killed four before taking his own life. >> and a u.s. mistal strike has killed the nation's top taliban leader. pakistan i didn't officials report he and his wife were killed and his body was burried in the village and many say it's a boost to pakistani and american efforts to rid al qaeda. turns out a connecticut woman recently honned as nurse of the year was hiding a few skell to bes in her closet like the fact that she wasn't even a nurse. after investigating a complaint into betty liechtenstein it was given she threw a phony awards dinner in her own hon spending $2,000 of her own money, if

convicted of wreckless endangerment liechtenstein could face up to five years in prison. >> in this morning's consumer alert as parents across the country prepare to stock up for their kids' back to school shopping needs, many are counting on tax-free shopping days to help them but right now only 15 states are offering tax-free shopping on back to school items. back to school items is projected to be down 8% so it gives retailers a chance to boost their sales but not all states are willing to give up that revenue. maryland hopes to reinstate tax-free days next year. if you're all atwitter because you couldn't tweet yesterday twitter away. the social networking site crippled the site and it was shut down for hours. it still may take a little longer to get things done.

hackers also targeted facebook which slowed it down but didn't knock it out completely. a bleak back to school season for retailers, but if you're trying to use the government's cash for clunkers program don't get too picky about the car you're wanting to buy. >> good morning. this back to school season is not looking good for most retailers. many of the nation's retailers reporting declines. several stores including aber crom by and fitch down 8%. however retailers known for bargains jumped. ross climbing 4% and tjx which owns tj max and marshalls rose 4%. and it may mean even though stores have already cut

inventory, they may be forced to cut prices going into the fall shopping season. as investors looked at properties for retailers, a drop as well for the bloomberg maryland index the consulting among the shares weighing on your index. and if you use the cash for clunkers program you may not find the color or amenities you want or a car at all. the clunkers' plan has depleted inventory especially at chrysler and show rooms, automakers need four to six weeks after consumers grabbed just about everything they had on the lots. at the new york stock exchange i'm michele reporting for wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you, michelle. they say everything is bigger in texas and that's especially true when it comes to the cost of eating at the new deloibs stadium.

a fleing carjacking suspect slams into a woman killing her and sending him to the hospital. >> jennifer franciotti joins us from city police headquarters this morning with more details to be story. good morning. >> good morning. police say this suspect was driving at an extremely high rate of speed when he hit the car killing the woman inside. >> flipped several times then smash do so up against the wall. sound horrible. it just a big crash. just like that. i mean, i didn't even get a chance to blink my eyes. >> it was real loud, like a boom! loud. >> this coop was driven by an alleged carjacker. it was spotted and police called off their brief pursuit quickly. >> the officers were not pursueing the car at the time of the crash. again, they found the vehicle, got the alert that it was taken in an armed carjacking but based to be way the driver

reacted when he saw the police, drove erratically, out of control, they were ordered to break it off at which time they did so. however, he continued on. >> they say the suspect was going at an extreme rate of speed just before the car collided with this nissan. the woman's car flipped four times and was knocked more than 60 feet from the intersection. right now the name of the victim is not become released. as for the suspect his name is not being released he they are but we do know he was taken to shock trauma with minor injuries. >> police are still searching for the suspects responsible for killing and shooting liquor store owner and the reward is up to $4,000. police received tips but no arrests. they are looking for two african-american males related to the murder. >> people have suffered.

finance at onhopkins to review money tracked by the o'malley administration. >> it is helping the economy. though we still have unemployment rising, it is rising at a reduced rate. >> as of july 31, stimulus funds helped create 2,2644 jobs in maryland but the number of new unemployment claims is much greater. at 5,023. even the 5,000 new claims the politicians and the government is going to argue that would have been 10,000 without the stimulus. >> state officials say 268 million stimulus dollars went to 115 highway projects of those 97 are open for bids and 73 have been given notice to proceed and 29 are under construction, one has been completed. state and local housing programs are eligible for $236 million but of that only $468,000 has actually been disbursed and of the $102

hazy, hot, humid 95 the forecast high but when you factor in the elevated dew points it's going to feel like the low 100's, so heat advisory may be issued. we'll hang around with the heat on monday as well and a 96-degree high and then we return to the low 90's for the middle half of next week. so all in all true dog days of august headed our way. >> thank you sandra. time for a last look at our story. one dead another at shock trauma after a dramatic accident. jennifer franciotti joins us to explain what happened. >> good morning. well police say a carjacking suspect hit a nissan causing it to flip over several times killing the woman inside. this all unfolded at 3:00 p.m. police spoted the suspect vehicle and briefly pursued the suspect but when it was deemed a safety hazard they called off

>> last week summer arrived and with that comes the exciting sound from west minister mcdaniels college and the reaves are back and preparing for another exciting year. this year's baltimore reaves team brings so much more clarity a quarterback with 19 games under his belt including an afc championship game cannot be considered your ordinary of more. coach john harbaugh who clearly deserved coach of the year awards also has a proven track record of success and understanding from players and fans alike that his system works. the team comes first. hard training camps garner results, discipline is not an option. the definition of ray lewis and others who flurried with free agency or retirement but ultimately decided there's no better place than baltimore to continue their terrific careers.
