" >> first let's check out the forecast with sandra shaw. >> we'll be about 10 degrees above what is normal. if you thought yesterday was bad at the airport, it will be much worse today. with that said, cooling centers are open around the area. they are located in all community centers and senior centers. you can always call 311 or visit our web site at wbaltv.com and there you will find tips on how to beat the heat and the locations of cooling centers. today is the day you want to take advantage of it. right now, current temperatures, we are in the mid to upper 70's. a 79-degree reading. that high anywhere from 95 to 98 degrees today. sunny and hot. it is going to feel much worse with the humidity. the real temperature around the metropolitan area, 100 to 105. and with that said, it is easy to understand why the national

weather service has issued a heat advisory going in effect from noon today until 8:00 tonight. let's go to sandra. >> 70 miles per hour, according to our speed sensor, on southbound 95 as you make your approach to 100. we had a medical call in that area. that is now clear. looking at the rest of our speed sensors, we are up around the area on the beltway and the major roads leading up to it. i want to tell you about police activity on herring street and prath -- pratt street. a quick live look at traffic shows not a lot happening in the white marsh area. no official delay there. let's turn to a live view of traffic where -- of traffic at harford where wever we are running well. >> police questioning a pair of men in connection with a murder

over the weekend. >> officers arrived on the scene on the 600 block of cherry road to find an unidentified victim suffering from multiple gun shot wounds. he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. they have two men in customer ti but have not identified nor charged them at this hour. >> meanwhile, police are looking for the gunman responsible for a shooting last night. the victim was hit in the leg and abdomen at the intersection of baltimore street and highland avenue. he's listed in critical condition. >> a search for the remaining two bodies yet to be recovered from this year's midair collision from a sight-seeing helicopter and a small plane in new york city. so far seven bodies have been pulled from the hudson river. recovery teams have pulled the wreckage from the helicopter out of the water, too, but they are still trying to locate the remains of the plane. both planes were flying below 1,100 feet and by law were not required to have contact with air traffic controllers.

>> it is very busy here. i've been in that air space. you have to watch. >> the accident has renud debate not just in that business -- renewed debate not just in that busy corridor, but whether new regulations are needed to avoid another tragedy. >> a plane went down over the weekend. there were two victims. family members are mourning their losses. >> letty williams died when the plane she was riding in crashed in carroll county saturday just minutes after taking off. she was traveling with 61-year-old robert kociemba who was the pilot of the two-seater plane. eric says bob and his mom were close friends. he said they enjoyed living life to its fullest flying, scuba diving, and traveling. at 66, letty williams was working on getting her own

pilot's license. he said she had a -- an adventureous spirit and will truly be missed. >> she was professional, she did a lot of good things. she had a lot of people that loved her, she loved a lot of people, and she's going to be missed by a lot of people. >> williams leaves hyped two sons and five grandchildren. federal investigators have not released information on what caused that plane to go down. jennifer franciotti reporting. now back to you. >> clinical trials begin today on a vaccine for the h1n1 or swine flu virus. volunteers will begin receiving shots today at the university school of medicine as part of a nationwide attempt to find a vaccine for the illness. fran phillips from the

department of health and mental services says they hope to have a flu vaccine by the fall. >> it will be after school starts. so what is important is that parents get ready for an unlikely flu season in making sure that students have all of the things they need to keep themselves healthy in the classroom. >> so to help keep students healthy, officials are asking parents to keep children home if they aren't feeling well. don't send them to school sick. they also should remember to cover coughs and sneezes examine wash their hands. >> train operators narrowly avoided a similar crash on march 2nd only after the train's operator pulled an emergency brake. there had been a problem with the train's automatic protection system that keeps a set distance for trains. the ntsb says investigators looking into the june 22nd crash

learned of the march incident last week. >> president obama is in mexico for a summit with the leaders of canada and mexico. the meeting comes as the president's health care plans come under attack here at home. brooke hart has more from washington. >> as barack obama's trip abroad began, his domestic priority, health care reform, faced criticism. >> this is not health reform, this is control! >> health care town halls are being called "town brawls." >> no one sent me here. i sent myself. >> tom harkin got an earful from opponents. there was a rowdy overflow crowd outside. inside, people bumped lawmakers from the spotlight. >> you have no ideas. you're typical, man. >> they got wind of the project

take-over of health care. >> liberal groups are also organizing supporters. he plans to conduct his own event tomorrow in new hampshire to correct what he calls misleading information. brooke hart, wbal-tv 11 news. >> we've seen naming rights for baseball stadiums, but a mother to be is hoping to receive money for giving up the naming rights to her unborn child. she says the idea is to raise money for herself and her six other children. family meaps members oppose the idea, but she said she's optimistic it will all turn out ok. >> i'm excited to see what name will actually be chosen, you know? hopefully not hershey or pepsi. >> corporate sponsorship does not appear to be in the cards for lavon, however. right now bidding is just at $445.

>> welcome back to "11 news today." 80 degrees now. once the sun goes up, we'll see the mercury rise higher and pretty quickly. it could be the hottest day of the year. 80 downtown. 74 at the airport. even 71 at york, pennsylvania, where we're usually much cooler. strong areas of high pressure extending its reach all over the east coast today. so incredible readings. looks like 89. even the upper elevations of the mountains, it will be warm there. it looks like winds will be out of the west at 5 to 10 miles per hour. here a lot worse. 96 degrees the forecast high. we did hit 96 yesterday at the harbor. we were 92 out at the airport. light westerly winds, and it is going to be a steamer with high humidity, as well. a scoff mucher in ocean city with a 95-degree high. the real story is 105 in this

metropolitan i-95 corridor. this is the most dangerous location. we have poor air quality out there and a heat advisory in effect from noon until 8:00. that means it is dangerous heat we're contending with. certainly the hottest day of the year. orange means poor ear quality around the area. yellow, if you are sensitive to pollutants, not a good day either. even though we will be hot, 100 is the record high today. 1900 that was set as a record high and in contrast, the record low was set in 1959. mostly cloudy skies in for us. looks like this ridge and high pressure will dictate our weather pattern. it will hold up for another day. it will weaken tomorrow. a front to our north and west will zip in here. a weak cold front, but enough to get us out of the extreme heat.

outside baghdad killed 16 people. american officials claim attacks like these could become more commonplace as u.s. troops scale back their presence in iraq. >> a group of teenagers in florida are lucky to be alive after a drive with an apparent case of road rage opened fire on their jeep. the 34-year-old gunman stormed out of his house after a fight with his girlfriend armed with an assault rifle, a handgun, and a bulletproof vest. after hitting a teenage driver in the leg, he then shot and killed himself. >> this morning, as the temperature climbs, so does the price of crude oil this summer, which means higher prices for you at the pump. marylanders are now paying $2.56 at the pump. that's up 11 cents from just a week ago. positive economic indexes have forced the price in gas up.

>> a drop in demand for air travel. to make it up, companies -- delta has cut more jobs. the company did not say exactly how many positions will be cut or when, but they will be cutting jobs. >> the latest from wall street where shopping for a job has gone virtual. that story and more in this morning's "bloomberg business report." >> general motors and e-bay are forced to take haggling to a new level. the two companies may announce a partnership today letting customers bargain over g.m. quars and trucks on an -- cars and trucks on their auction web site. >> a darker side to the cash for clunkers program. "u.s.a. today" says the program is sending thousands of cars to the scrapyard even though they

could be re-sold and driven for years to come by lower-income families. as they reduce the use of cars, the price of new cars may go up. >> the unemployment rate decreased for the first time since 2008. gains for the bloomberg index as well. finally, new evidence the recession has many of us turning away from slot machines and unwittingly hurting the state's pocketbooks. revenues from casinos and lotteries is dropping for the first time in years. states watch casino ref news -- revenues dropping. >> well, if you thought spending just three hours in a cramped airplane was tough, imagine spen spending the entire one couped

up in one as it sits on a runway. 47 people spent eight hours locked in a plane after severe weather forced the continental flight to make an emergency landing in rochester, minnesota, after midnight. since all screeners had gone home for the night, the passengers weren't allowed to get off the plane. >> everybody in the plane was kind of moving, trying to find positions to sleep in. there wasn't any room. the plane was getting warmer, there were at least two babies nearby me who cried and screamed almost the whole night. the smells were getting worse, the bathroom was getting worse, the babies obviously started going to the bathroom. >> oh, my goodness. it wasn't until morning when parent staff returned to work that passengers were finally allowed to move into the termal area, and then it took another three hours for the plane to get clearance to leave and resume its flight plan. >> that's some sort of torture.

temperature to rise. we're calling for a high today in baltimore of 96 degrees. the temperature range anywhere from 95 to 98. you combine that with the humidity and the elevated due point and it will feel around the i-95 corridor like 100 to 105 degrees. that puts us in the heat advisory range. so we're talking dangerous heat here. more details on when the heat will go away coming up in your seven-day in a little bit. keith? >> yes, the ravens training staff will keep an eye on the ravens today. you can see it here on wbal-tv 11. the ravens with two practices. only the afternoon session is open to all the fans at 2:45.

their press conference today following their meeting in washington this afternoon. in washington, nicole killion, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the crash of a small plane in carroll county has the family members of two victims in that crash struggling to cope with that loss. jennifer franciotti has that story. >> letty williams leaves behind two sons and five grandchildren and they say her spirit of adventure and love of life will be dearly missed. >> it's devastating. that's my mom, you know? >> eric roth says it is just starting to sink in that his mother is gone. letty williams died when the plane she was riding in crashed several minutes after taking off saturday morning. he wants his mom to be remembered as the outgoing person she was. >> without going overboard, she had a good time.

from noon until 8:00 tonight. we are well on our way to reach that forecast high of 86. the sun has only been up about 45 minutes. here you see the forecast high in central md -- maryland. slight chance for isolated storm. in the mountains and upper he will -- elevations, dealing with high temperatures today. that's up and down the i-95 corridor. it will feel like 100 to 105 degrees today. that's going to be the realistic letter for your -- the real stickler for your forecast today. orange air quality category. that's the measure for the pollutants in the environment. so don't do anything to exert outside if you can help it. we'll keep the heat intact.
