we are 91 degrees downtown. when you combine the actual humidity with it, it feels like 97 right now in downtown baltimore. feels like 96 at b.w.i. marshall, 96 in easton, and in ocean city, blazing. heat index is 101 already. the biggest swath is this purple swap here. it will feel like 100 to 105 later on. that is where the heat advisory is in effect. prepare yourself. i will let you know when it some relief is in sight in the seven- day forecast. >> baltimore city officials are helping residents deal with the extreme heat. cooling centers are open around the city for anyone who needs them. barry simms has details. >> there are all kinds of efforts to keep people cool. you mentioned the cooling centers, but the salvation army is also working to give people

and older individuals. >> baltimore city has opened a cooling centers. there are six centers in baltimore providing air- conditioned shelters where people can get water and ice, and the cooling centers are located in various areas around the city. the southern community center is on the 600 block of cherry hill road. the northwest center is on the 3300 block of sheradale avenue, and the west on the 1100 block of pennsylvania ave. the east and center is at the 1400 east federal street. the commission on aging has set up a five cooling centers for the elderly or anyone else who needs to get in from the heat. the mta is working with baltimore city to make bus passes available for one free ride for anyone who may need that because of the heat. those passes are available at emergency department and city far as is. -- city fire houses.

>> we are hoping folks make it ok through the extreme heat. the latest forecast is always at your for -- always at your fingertips wbaltv.com. baltimore city police are investigating a possible robbery at a gas station. david collins is following developments. >> we are on the 5800 block of diller avenue. there are actually two crime scenes. let's start with what brought police here in the first place. police are looking for two suspects to help this gas station convenience store. the store sells everything from t-shirts to eliminate. authorities have not released details of the possible weapon or if anyone was hurt. we are told by a gas station employee that the owner was punched in the temple by the robbers. the neighbors spotted the robbers and they say he on the least three gas stations in the area. according to police, the suspect

fled on foot and entered a home in the 4200 block of mary ave. police believe they are still inside. a city police version of a swat team is in place. the armored vehicle is in place, it sitting there for the past few minutes. belair road is closed. a three-block area from century to the 5500 block, and as a safety precaution, neighbors are being told to stay indoors. about, reporting live, david collins, wbal-tv 11 news. >> investigators are trying to figure out what caused an ultralight plane to go down in carroll county over the weekend letty williams died, along with robert kociemba, the pilot of the plane. the woman had an adventurous spirit and a loving nature. >> she was an accomplished woman, professional.

far has painted a morbid picture of a quick and powerful crash. some of the victims are still inside pieces of chopper pulled from the river late sunday. nine people were killed, including five italian tourists on the helicopter. and family from the pennsylvania on board the plane. pictures obtained by fox news showed the moment of impact, the wing of the airplane ripped off. sources tell nbc that the plane may have been in a climbing right turn when it hit the helicopter. another pilot on the ground tried to warn the pilot. >> i said, "jeremy, you have an airplane off your back. i would do not know if you'll pass off to the left or what." it was a matter of three or four seconds, and i saw the impact. >> the chopper pilot may never have seen it coming. the crash in a crowded corridor of manhattan where aircraft fly under 1100 feet do not have to

>> it turns out that the man who went on a deadly shooting rampage at a gymnasium last weekend in pennsylvania was questioned by police the week before in an unrelated incident. investigators talked to george sodini after a man fitting his description was caught playing with what appeared to be a hand grenade on a city bus. when police cannot positively determined it was mr. sodini with the grenade, they let him go. houses of people packed the steps of the texas state house to protest a national health plan. they are upset over the proposed changes to the health care system, because they say it gives government too much control with a demonstration mirrors many other rallies being held across the country. still to come, you see it in commercial and all over the grocery stores. products with high fiber. but what is the fiber frenzy all about? >> and heat advisory in effect

friendships. consumers are grabbing food off grocery shelves peppered with added fiber. general mills this year spent $560 million to promote its new high fiber products. why the frenzy? what kind of fiber are talking about? >> at utah state university, we tasted pieces of cheese, some made with and without added fiber. fiber is sort of the new fad. for researchers all over the country are experimented with their own products. >> lower cholesterol, lower obesity, the overweight. a different population of the bacteria living in their colon, mediated by components of fiber. >> consumers need to know that there is it of its between dietary fiber and functional fiber, the kinds of things added to the products you see on the

shelves. on like fiber in whole foods, a functional fibers are components extracted or synthesized using bacteria and fermentation. it is pulled from things like chicory root. it is not only a fiber additive, but may be a possible replacement for sugar as well. even a human enzymes cannot digest the chemical bonds used in the additive, it can trigger a good bacteria in most of us that will lower the acidity of the colon, producing a population of harmful bacteria. based on many of our meeting -- eating, is understandable why functional fiber is a marketable right now. >> it averages about 38 grams per man and 25 grams for a woman. we are getting less than half of that. >> he says we are getting a
