says an air traffic controller who was handling the small plane was apparently involved in a quote inappropriate phone conversation at the time of the crash. but the f.a.a. say the employee's actions don't appear to have contributed to the accident itself. more than 20 years after he was convicted of the bombing of pan am flied 103. he could have released from jail. he was sentenced to life in prison for blowing up a pan american airliner over scorled as it flew from london to new york on december 18, 1988. all 259 people on board that 747 were killed along with 11 people on the ground. several people from maryland died on pan am flight 103, and the idea that he may get out of prison is not welcome. including the mild family of

will have a ruling by the end of the month. >> and now back to the breaking news we first told you about at the top of the newscast. michael phelps was involved in a two-car accident just about two hours ago. police were called to the intersection around 9:00 tonight. what we do know is phelps was not injured. the person in the vehicle in front of him was taken to the hospital for treatment. >> we had a traffic accident on val kert and fiddle street. one driver was michael phelps. another was a female driver who was transported to an area hospital as a precaution. mr. phelps did not complain of any injuries. we have asked our people to investigate this, and they are literally interviewing mr. phelps, passengers and witnesses right now. >> tonight people tell us they do know that alcohol was not involved in that accident.

on a firearm charge. a federal grand jury in nashville arraigned aid ran gill jam jr. with one count of being a fell on in possession of a firearm. he sold a weapon to mcnair's girlfriend two days before he was shot. he faced 10 years in prison if convicted. >> we have updiets for you tonight on two i-team investigations. the first involves an unlicensed contractor who was accused of bilking a home owner out of thousands of dollars. he was accused of taking the money for work he never completed. they say he did not have permission. he was ordered to play -- to pay $4,000 by his february

date. also tonight, earnest lewis the man convicted in a scheme to defraud homeowners will spend more than four years in yale. the i team first vafed him and his brother back in july of 2007. the lewis brothers offered to help financialally vulnerable homeowners to avoice foreclosure, but instead sold them services and charged fees and didn't do anything. the brother is scheduled to be sentenced next month. >> the purple pride in full force. >> the ravens certainly took on the redskins in tonight's first preseason game. we have team coverage of that game. john sherman is live downtown. he has been talking with the fans tonight, sharing the game with them. first we begin with pete gilbert with a quick recap of the battle of the beltway.

>> it turned out to be not much of a battle as the ravens blew the doors off the redskins. it's a preseason game. you can't say they are going to win the super bowl after this, but as far as things you wanted to see, you see a team that didn't turn the balance over, didn't allow any point and put up 23 themselves. it was impressive indeed. here are some highlights. ray lewis didn't have much to do with this game. he played one serious and was done. that was ok with him. but the offense got things going. joe flacco to ray rice. a little bit of a stumble. many plays over 35 yards for the ravens tonight. they also got it done with troy smith to r.j. smith. the smith connection impressive. troy smith threw the ball 30 times. he was the player of the game, completed 14 passes, should have completed many more, several were dropped by harper,

but one was caused. harper caught the pass for the only receiving touchdown of the game. joining me now is michael oher, the first round draft pick, after your first game, how are you feeling? >> it was a great experience. i was excited, but i have to get back to work and work on my technique and fundamentals saturday. >> we talked about the lasting image from the game had to have been the bloody face after a pancaked a redskins' player, you were bloody, but you didn't look like you cared at all? >> it is part of football. it is a tough physical game. that is what being a raven is all about. >> was the experience what you hoped it would be? >> it was a great experience, exied, all the fans, and you are in the -- excited, all the fans. it was great. >> are you in any pain right now? >> no, i am good. i don't even feel a thing. >> thanks for joining us. >> thank you for having me.

early evening. some locations got heavy downpours. this is the way the radar looked from about 11:00 in the morning through 8:00 in the evening. you can see that batch of showers that rolled down out of pennsylvania through baltimore county and baltimore city. there were some heavy rain at m&t bank stadium before everybody started getting into it and arriving. those showers worked their way to d.c., down the i-95 corridor and have now moved out of the region. they blossomed during the heat of the day, moved to northern virginia and dumped about a third of an inch at w.b.i., and a half inch at inner harbor. high temperatures ended up a couple short of the normal 86 and way short of the record high set seven years ago in 2007. temperatures have cools into the 60's in southern

over the redskins. i would say mission accomplished, pete. >> major guys did not get hurt. the defense didn't allow any points, and there were tons of big plays from the offense, something to which we are not terribly accustomed joe flacco was not exceptional, but he didn't get enough time on the field. >> he hooked up with kelly washington, a 17-yard game. washington, a big find for the ravens in that slot position. michael oher, looked extremely impressive. suffered a gouge on his forehead. the cut forced oher to leave the game to get stitches, but he came back and played well. you saw everything you could home hope for. second quarter, troy smith in another quarterback. closing minute of the half find justin harper, a 19-yard touchdown strike, giving the ravens a 13-0 lead at the halftime.
