olence, it could frighten people away. kerry cavanaugh joins us from downtown with more of the story. >> the police presence we have seen this evening is reminiscent of what we saw during the springtime after several people where jump in the downtown area. a lot of foot traffic. that is because of the baseball game. many are concerned about incidences' like this. downtown baltimore had a rebirth several years ago. it the harborplace transformed into a place of culture and leisure. one person watched the vision unfold as she works for the baltimore office of tourism. >> you do not have to sit inside a restaurant. if you were working downtown, you could go outside any outside a cafe near the harbor.

it is a great place to job. >> this past weekend, two people were shot inside of the pavilion. >> we have always had incidences' at the harbor. they were not very frequent. they happen occasionally. they happen in other places it in the city. this is not the first time nor will it be the last. >> some are concerned about the long-term impact of businesses around the harbor. >> we need to make sure that we address this very seriously as we move forward. >> police have stepped up their presence at several checkpoints. they say this is just a result of it some other problems. how to protect visitors from crime? bob he believes part of the solution lies in saturating the area with more people. >> i think the one thing i would

personally like to see is the return of more events that bring a mass of people down to the waterfront. >> officials estimate that more than 40 million people visit the harbor every year. -- 14 million people visit the harbor every year. police will have to look out for trouble makers. reporting live, downtown, i am kerry cavanaugh. >> thank you. a baltimore man accused of rap ing and murdering a woman back in germany was extradited of charges. shoot allegedly -- allegedly she was injured on a military base. there were not able to collect enough evidence until 2002 dna evidence gave them the breakthrough they needed. if convicted, the man faces a

possible life sentence. the family the someone killed in a bombing could find out within the next few days if the man convicted of the attack will be released from prison. he has terminal cancer and was asked to be released on compassionate grounds. they are consulting with the families of the victims in the u.k. and the united states. many of the families here are hoping that he stays in prison. some of maryland homeowners were shocked to find their mortgage lenders were having major problems. the federal government has taken action against a florida-based mortgage company which has about 9000 people in the baltimore

area to has the mortgages through them. >> the federal housing administration stopped the company from writing any new insured mortgages from the fha. now they are wondering who holds the mortgage. questions about the company's practices led to government by the federal government -- led to action by the federal government. >> they have seized files. they do not know what they are after. they pulled their lending license overnight. >> the company failed to smoke -- submit an annual report. there are concerns of fraud. they failed to disclose that they were subject to examination into its business practices of the past year. housing and urban development has proposed debarment of the chief president of the company. maryland and 13 other states sanctioned the company.

they reached a $9 million settlement after questioning their underwriting standards, and internal control procedures. >> they are in no lugger originating or processing loans in any jurisdiction. >> that is what customers get when they call the corporate headquarters. they held the loans of more than 9000 maryland homeowners. those that try to contact the customer service line are getting a dial tone. the company's suspension earlier this month forced about 1000 employees out of work. maryland state regulators say the company still has about 150 people trying to handle calls. >> the company has assured us that no late fees will be charged for the next 60 days and no negative credit reports will be done in the next 60 days. >> attempts to reach them were

the sports spotlight is bracing. there could be an indy racing event. our reporter has more to explain. >> it would be exciting to watch cars raced up and down the street along the harbor. the idea has local hotels, restaurants and businesses excited. it could bring in more than $1 million for the city. >> once i got here and i looked at the harbor and where the track is going to be going, it is a win-win situation. >> that is a champion putting his full support behind building a car race in downtown baltimore. if anybody who knows of racing, it is him. it comes one week after the baltimore city council approved a resolution to give increasing

development team two years to pursue the race which is expected to bring almost $100 million of economic impact. one person helped make the soccer match a reality and says this would be a great event. >> it would have a great economic impact on the region. >> as far as the course, it is going to be near the inner harbor with a major stride race on russell and, and streets. -- with major races on the streets of russell, pratt, conrad. as far as the state department of business and economic development, they are still reeling from the soccer match. >> i have never seen the city so

packed, the number of restaurants and hotels in that were servicing people to see the game. >> there is a lot of competition from four other cities including boston, cleveland, and detroit for the race. baltimore has the best chance. a series of studies including noise, traffic, and capital improvement has to be done. they are looking to make a decision by july of next year. wbal-tv. >> it is not a shortage, but more like a delay. that is regarding the swine flu vaccine. officials for the u.s. department of health and human services say they will only have about 45 million doses ready instead of the 120 million anticipated. they hope to ship out of doses every week after that until the

government gets its full order of 195 million doses. the delay is being blamed on manufacturing problems. six people have died from swine flu complications in maryland. president obama is taking heat from some democratic party members who are angry about them putting out feelers this weekend about the health clark -- health-care reform plan. our washington bureau reporter has the details. >> the president has shifted to downplaying the role of a public auction in health care reform. another day, and other emotional demonstration over health care, this time in phoenix where president obama spoke with veterans of war. >> there has been so much misinformation by health insurance reform, let me say this. one thing that reform will not change as veteran health care. no one is going to take away your benefits. that is the plain and simple

truth. >> he commented on new government insurance for those lacking coverage. his administration seems to be backing away from the public auction. the president calling it an area of reform. >> their idea would be to construct a provider network, a set of benefits that they would offer. the idea is that they would have to compete with the private insurers. >> the shift in focus could, -- could calm some of the raucous town hall meetings. someone else says that co-ops have the votes to pass in the senate. there is a risk that the change could built -- alienate more progressive democrats which would be another hurdle on the road to compromise.

investigate the beating of a man by several police officers. a 42 year-old man was stopped by police for allegedly speeding. when he tried to get his license out of his back pocket, officers tackled him. other officers arrived and began to punch him. he was taser to three times. he had bruises, cuts, and suffered permanent damage to his thumb. >> all i remember is getting out of the car and getting thrown down. i felt the punches. in his last words were, i cannot read. >> the minneapolis police chief says the original officer acted appropriately. the responding officers had actions that were of concern. that is why he asked the fbi to get involved. >in andy "consumer alert -- in

the "consumer alert" the government has received three complaints of the transmission overheating in the chrysler jeep. the wrangler is the car with the concern. so far, there have been no injuries. and the man accused of plotting the biggest theft of credit and debit information through identity theft. he hacked into 130 million accounts. he targeted 7-eleven customers. his efforts stopped when he went to jail in another case. if convicted in another case, he faces up to 20 years in prison. he is the former informant of the u.s. secret service that

helped the agency fined hackers. forecasters say it is too soon to see if hurricane bill will threaten the east course -- east coast. it is picking up steam and could become a major hurricane of the next day or so. hopefully, it is steering clear of florida. >> as claude that came ashore on the florida panhandle overnight, the storm left a wet wake-up call. it spread rain. >> we had a 65 mile per hour gusts. trees were blowing down -- not blowing down but bending over quite a bit. >> the biggest damage from a suspected twister near fort myers. sporadic power outages, the biggest impact may be the reminder that this is hurricane season. tropical systems are nothing to

>> yes. just because it was quiet at the beginning does not mean it will not increase. here is a satellite picture from all day today. look at the florida gulf coast. he can see the thunderstorm activity. we have anna which was a tropical depression in porter which fell -- prayer we puerto . bill is a category 2 storm. switch the map, we will show you where he is expected to go. there is the track he is expected to take over the next five days. taking us just to the west of bermuda. that is by thursday or friday.

bill is not a threat to the eastern seaboard. he could get close to the state of maine. he is expected to maintain his category three status as he goes into these waters here. no rain in town. we are drive for that. we have had some thunder storms causing some flooding problems in the mountains out west in virginia. the storm has been sitting there all evening long. you can see some of the heat lightning perhaps. this will dissipate overnight. tomorrow is a different story. we may actually see some of the storm activity in. it is a hot and humid day. temperatures made it up to 92

degrees downtown. 89 degrees at the harbor. downtown is 80 degrees. here are those of thunderstorms. they are stalled out in the virginia mountains and are not doing much at all. there is humidity to the west of the mountains. some of it is due to the tropical moisture that was left by the storm. mostly clear tonight. 67 degrees set 71 degrees is the overnight temperatures. the cal ripken world series going on in the county. the early games make it a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm. there are local teams playing.
