forecast by using our interactive radar. it allows you to track rain or storms to your very own street. just log on to wbaltv.com and click on weather. >> tonight city officials are responding to the brutal attack of an elderly fisherman. the victim remains in stable condition at shock trauma. 11 news reporter lisa robinson is live with more on what we're learning about one of the suspects in the case. >> first let me tell you a little bit about the victim, james privett. he is here at shock thralm with severe head injuries. we're told this evening he's in fair and stable condition. the mayor says she was able to speak to him and his family last night. she says mr. privett told her he was simply out doing what he loved to do in his retirement. he had simply gone fishing. >> all of us really need to be enraged about what has happened and what continues to happen in so many incidents throughout our city.

racism, pure and simple, is a sin. it's a sin. >> racial violence like this, we have no place for this in our society, in baltimore or anywhere. >> the mayor, civic and religious leaders and police commissioner fred bealefeld denounced the hate crime committed against 76-year-old james privett. he and his wife were fishing at fort armistead park when he was attacked. >> at around 3:30 in the morning, tuesday, and in fort armistead park, mr. privett was targeted and assaulted by a group of three white men. >> charging documents reveal the man in custody for the hate crime, calvin lockner, has ties to the white supremacist groups arian botherhood and nordic brotherhood. police observed a tattoo of hitler on his stomach with the words "he lives." the same documents say when the

three white males approached privett, one of them knocked him to the ground, punched him in the fist, saying you black n, i'll get you n. the other males beat him with a bat. privett was able to get a guard at this plant to call for help. in his taped confession, police say lockner told them this wouldn't have happened if he was a white man. >> neighbors cannot believe what happened to such a nice couple. they are looking out for them. >> we keep an eye on the house because of her kids and things. >> a judge denied bail for lockner this morning. police say if you have any information about this crime, to give them a call at 410-396-2100. >> tonight, federal officials say businesses need a battle plan to combat the h1n1 flu. the government is unveiling new gasolines for businesses as the flu season gets closer.

we have team coverage. >> new government flu gasolines say one of the most important things bosses can do is set the right tone when it comes to sick leave. with thousands of employees and an essential service to provide. pepco is bracing for h1n1 virus or swine flu. >> we're monitoring it. sure, we're concerned about the possibility. but we're doing all we can in advance of it. >> a big part of the message from management to employees -- >> stay home if you're sick. >> now federal officials are urging all businesses to adopt the same attitude when flu season hits. >> in america, we love to praise the puritan work ethic and with reason. but this fall, it would serve the country better to praise common sense and responsibility. >> companies must ensure sick leave policies are flex ill and, quote, nonpunitive. >> perhaps waiving policies that require notes and verification from medical

personnel. >> also, companies should have plans to cope with high absentee and be ready to cancel nonessential meetings and travel. they should encourage employees to get flu shots. >> finally, keeping workplaces as clean as possible. >> at pepco, signs encourage workers to wash hands and cover their coughs. officials say owe people are bound to get sick even with good precautions. >> there is definite concern about economic impacts. officials today stopped short of recommending businesses close their doors in the event of a flu outbreak saying every business is different and no blanket policy applies to all. in washington, wbal-tv 11 news. >> meanwhile, state health officials have begun clinical trials on the h1n1 vaccine on children here in maryland. pediatric trials are under way all around the country. when the vaccine tests are

completed. residents will be immunized for free or for a small fee. john sherman continues our team coverage in west baltimore. >> just to tell you how real this thing is, state experts tell us they expect in a worst-case scenario about 40% of the children in the greater baltimore area will come down with the h1n1 virus. best care scenario moves the number to about 10%. in annapolis today, a select group of kids was given the h1n1 vaccine in a trial. all maryland children will be advised to do the same this fall. and parents are being told to be vigilant. >> there's two sets of viruses that make circulate in the united states. one is this new h1n1, which no child has immunity to and therefore many can catch it, and then there is the seasonal flu, which are strains that the population of the earth has been exposed to for several

seasons. >> kids to get as many as four flu shots per child this year. >> we know that in young children, they need two shots to make a satisfy antibody response in their blood stream and we assume at least that much for the h1n1 strain. >> the state is asking parents to get involved and seek advice on their kids from their doctors. the recommendation is coming out that children and students enrolled in our schools should in fact be vaccinated against both types of flu. they may require two doses of influenza vaccine. but the best thing is talk to the doctor about it. and every kid goes home to a parent who could transmit to a parent to their workplace, so employers are being asked to get involved as well. >> specifically, looking at opportunities for staff to have hand-washing and those kinds of measures that delay the transmission of virus in a workplace, that's very important.

employers need to think ahead about liberal leave policies. if there are employees who are out sick themselves or need to stay home to take care of children or other families, how would the business continue to operate with a reduced workforce? so not only do they need to think about a plan, but communicate it to the employees and let them know what the drill is. >> the state is encouraging employers to prepare plans that will allow healthy workers to go home to care for children or the elderly who come down with h1n1. >> the congregation of beth el a.m.e. church returns home sunday. lightning hit the steeple of the church july 1. the church is reopening in time for its annual holy convocation event. tonight we got a look at the repairs. much more on that tonight at 11:00. >> howard county police have

taken four people into custody in a large-scale identity theft scheme. an alert house keeper noticed suspicious documents at a hotel. officers found hundreds of documents including driver's licenses, credit cards, checks and bank statements. they also found $12,000 in cash and several wigs in a vehicle belonging to the suspects. >> investigators have begun to contact the victims and we anticipate to continue to identify victims and make contact with them in the coming weeks and months. it will take some time to process all of the evidence that they have collected. >> police arrested three women and a man, all of them from florida. they're charged with a number of crimes including credit card theft. police say they plan to file additional charges as the investigation continues. chances are back-to-school means hundreds spent on textbooks. prices have risen so much, laws are being changed.

will it make a difference at the cash register? here is our i-team reporter. >> take a look at this. this textbook, almost $125. even this paperback, almost $50. one report to congress found that textbook prices have nearly tripled in the last 20 years. and by some estimates, students spend about $1,000 a year on college books. it is almost unbelievable. the cash registers total at the college bookstore. or what one book alone can cost. >> used, it's $107. >> and new? >> $142.50. >> while sunny books tend to be the priciest, it is all a lesson in economics. >> students are really suffering. it's largely do to predatory practices on the part of publishers. >> laws are being changed. publishers say the facts are being misrepresented. and students continue to pay and pay. >> coming up at 11:00, how are

top chef premieres tonight. a local chef tries to cook her way to the top. >> she's not allowed to speak with us. but kim dacey caught up with the owner of the restaurant where she works. >> she's been cooking here since the restaurant opened nearly two years ago. she took her experience from the kitchen here to sin city to make a run for the title of top chef. it's one of bravo's top shows. the contestants on season six are in las vegas, including jesse. >> she's a fun person. she's a very talented chef. but she's got a wild side to her. >> the owner of the restaurant was excited when his chef said she was taking six weeks off to compete. she even cooked for 11 news for a story in january. she's back at work now but has to keep mum. >> she can't tell me anything about it. i know absolutely nothing. >> they take away the contestants cell phones. he only got one call during the

the bottom of the screen. a line of storms moving through york county. a thunderstorm warning in effect there for another 10 to 15 minutes or so. the storms are over harrisburg and moving toward york at this time. we'll watch that line to see if it moves to our area in the next couple hours ago. but really the best rain chances are south of us for the evening hours. 87 the high at the airport. not quite as warm as yesterday. typical high, 85 degrees. only .04 of an inch of rain overnight at the airport. 82 in cambridge. 83 at annapolis. warmer to the north. westminster, 90. the sun is more persistent to our north and northwest. here you can see all the

sunshine to the north where it got a little warmer today. here is that line of storms up in pennsylvania running ahead of this cool front, which will really fail to move in, fail to budge this warm, tropical air that we have. it won't be until the weekend, when a front comes out of the northern plains and the great lakes, that we'll be able to purchase some of this tropical air south. speaking of the tropics, we have bill, 135-mile-an-hour winds, well-defined eye in hurricane bill as it moves to the north of the caribbean islands. it looks like the storm will pass west of bermuda but east of the u.s. atlantic coast. sunday morning it should be off the maryland coast about 500 miles or so. warm and humid tonight. scattered thunderstorms. a small chance here in baltimore. 88 to 92 tomorrow's high. tomorrow warm and humid can scattered showers and thunderstorms. seven-day forecast even has rain friday.

in fact, friday, the highest chances. could be strong storms there. sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, a lot less humidity and temperatures will cool down a little bit. >> mark clayton will likely miss the second preseason game because of his hamstring injury. derrick mason switched his practice jersey today to number nine, a number he'll wear as a tribute to steve mcnair. demeets williams returned to practice. clayton starting to stretch things out a little bit. that hamstring has bothered him throughout the preseason. add to the mix the addition of kelly washington and terrelle

suggests, who is coming back from an achilles injury. overall the injury picture looking pretty good for the ravens, especially for this point of training camp. >> i think our goal this training camp is to be the very best ravens we can be when it's all said and done. we have a vision for it. we know what we want it to look like. if we can be the best ravens, that's all we're worried about. >> katie hoff has decided to switch her training center to california. she won a silver and two bronze in the beijing games. company considered her effort a disappointment. over the weekend, her coaches decided to part ways. she'll train in fuller ton on

the west coast with an eye toward winning gold at the london games three years from now. with the loss in tampa, the orioles are on track for a bad season of epic proportions. they have an 8-22 mark since the all-star break. if they continue losing at that pace, they're finish the season shy of 60 wins for the first time since 1988 and only the fifth time in franchise history . the irony of this is this comes when the organization arguably has the best young talent than at any time in recent memory. but that means growing pains and someone is going to have to emerge as a leader of that young group. last night's loss leaves the orioles 23 games below .500.

the worst record so far this season with 43 games left to play. chris tillman goes for his second win tonight. the rays have the edge in the motivation column at three games behind texas and boston in the wild card standings. >> you don't want to say it will all get better. if this goes to four losing seasons, you could be excited. but after 12 years, who wants to hear it? worst record in american league history. >> ouch! announcer: during the autobahn for all event, you can get great lease deals. i love it! i just want to know it's the right move.
