we're back now with more of "today" on a thursday morning. it is august 27th, 2009. this month is nearly out of here. we're not going to be out of here without a little unstable weather over the weekend with two tropical storm danny out in the atlantic. i'm matt lauer along with ann curry and al roker. coming up in this half-hour,

we're learning more now about the funeral plans for senator ted kennedy. he will be laid to rest on saturday. alongside his brothers at arlington national cemetery after a memorial service and public viewing at the kennedy library up in boston. we'll tell you more about all that's going to happen over the next couple of days in just a few minutes. yet another sad milestone for that family, but there is something very comforting about the fact that he'll be buried near his brothers. then we're moving on to a practical note for families. basically sending their kids off to school. we'll be talking about how from kindergarten to high school and beyond there are high-tech ways that are not sort of for fun, they're actually gadgets and toys that can help our kid learn, we're toll. we'll check out some of those ideas coming up. and we've got six surprising ways that you could lead a healthier and happier life. we had eight, but we lost a couple -- no. so what you can do now to give yourself a better life. and, guess who's on the

plaza this morning? >> who? >> the newly crowned miss universe is here. i just went up and said hi. she had no idea who i was but she gave me a double-cheek kiss anyway. >> this is the second year in a row venezuela has row. >> a dynasty. natalie's got news headlines of the day. good morning. thousands of people are expected to flock to the john f. kennedy memorial library and museum in boston today to pay respects to senator ted kennedy. kennedy who died tuesday night will lie in repose in a closed casket for public viewing. last night in the nation's capitol, a candlelight vigil was held to honor the long-time senator and at boston's fenway park, thousands of red sox fans paid tribute with a moment of silence and a show of gratitude for kennedy's lifetime of loyalty to his team and state. earlier on "today," more tributes. long-time kennedy friend senator john mccain and vice president joe biden both spoke about the kennedy legacy.

bill. looks like some time friday into saturday it becomes a hurricane. could brush the outer banks of the carolinas. then the cone of uncertainty, anywhere about 100 miles either side of that line we could be looking at landfall or at least a brush with that from long island on into new england. that could change our weather conditions significantly on saturday. so we'll keep an eye on that. of coco >> 86 is the forecast high with partly sunny to partly cloudy skies. as we had to the shores of ocean city, it looks like mid-80s and a slight chance for a storm.

"prevention's" readers are often doing. it is good news for many of us. >> first is being the life of the party.

who knew being the social butterfly can help you live a longer, healthier life. what's the connection? >> outgoing people are 50% less likely to develop dementia, according to a major study done in sweden. they talked to outgoing people and they all said they were not easily stressed. it is about the stress hormone cortisol that affects the way our brain cells talk to each other. if we have lower levels of cortisol we have more resilient brains. >> do you want to encourage more interaction, get out there, be more social. but other ways to reduce cortisol levels in your body? >> we can meditate. exercise helps sleeping well and drinking black tea. they did a major study on this in london and found people who were given a stressful task and drank tea lowered their sort kol levels 47% in one hour. cut them in half. >> cutting coffee, drinking more black tea. okay, next for all the techies out there, good news here, too. turns out technology can

actually be good for you. help you live a longer life. why is it? >> all that time we're spending on facebook and skype and twitter, what's happening is that makes us feel connected. and feeling connected, what's happening here is that loneliness is a killer. so it can raise your blood pressure, it can suppress your immune system and cardiologists told "prevention" it can easily make our blood more sticky which can lead to clotting and heart disease. staying connected even virtually can that have major impact. >> as a runner i'm very glad to reveal this next one out there, daily runs are going to help you live a much longer, healthier life. because studies have shown that running 40 minutes a day have actually helped people function better physically and mentally as they age. why 40 minutes? that's a long time running every day. >> it is. but scientists at stanford studied runners and non-runners over 21 years and found that the people who ran an average of 40 minutes, about five hours a week, had lower levels of

neurological diseases, heart disease, infection. but any level of exercise is going to help you as long as you get your heart rate up for about 20 minutes a day. you'll get all of these benefits of mood, preventing disease and a longer life. >> also you can have a flat belly which is important for the next one. because a flat belly is really going to be good for you in the long term. right? why is that? and what is a flat belly. >> people who carry excess weight in their middle have a 20% increased risk of dying earlier. it's because this belly fat is dangerous. it's visceral belly fat, tucked in and around our organs. in the case of women you should have a waist of 35 inches or smaller. for men it's 40 inches or smaller. if not, even if your bmi is normal, if the weight is carried in your middle, you should address it. >> you increase your chances of heart disease -- >> certain types of cancer, dementia, all of that. >> a lot of health problems go along with it.

now here's a good one. if you sprinkled raspberries on top of your oatmeal this morning, it is a good thing. because the fiber is going to help you, too. >> it's all about the fiber here. americans get between 14 and 17 grams of fiber a day. if they add just 10 grams a day to that they can lower their risk of heart disease by 17%. breakfast is an easy way to do that. if you have oatmeal or whole grain serial, that's about five grams. one cup of raspberries has eight grams of fiber. you've already set yourself on the way. >> there you go. lastly -- i love this one -- feeling good about yourself and your body proves that in the long run this is going to be good for you. >> they studied this at yale and they found that there is a really strong connection between our attitude, our mental outlook and longevity. people who have an optimistic view of life add about -- and feel younger than their years add about 7 1/2 years to their life. of course, it's not necessarily about how many years, but the

i thought, what would american magic look like. i started looking at things like tall tales and to really get a sense of the perseverance, the love of home and family, the things that are very important to us here. >> so you and your mom went an an interesting trip to research this. right? >> um-hmm. >> what was that like? >> that was very fun. we went to kansas and nebraska also. and it was just fun. >> what were some of the things you saw? >> very large things. >> large things. >> we like things big in america. >> yes. like a large ball of twine, the biggest ball of twine which we added twine to. >> the largest porch swing. >> um-hmm. >> you said the largest painting photo? >> the largest reproduction of a van gogh painting. >> you actually saw dorothy's slippers? >> we went to the wizard of oz museum. >> well, did you come back

with -- it enables you to help mom write the book or give her some ideas? >> somewhat, yeah. >> let's get to some of our book club kids. >> this question is for ingrid. the main setting of the book was in the midwest. why did you choose there? >> well, it all started out because of the very first sentence of the book, which says that the family had to move to the deepest part of inland because one of the boys in the book causes a hurricane. and i had to look and find out where the deepest part of inland was, and it was in kansas. i thought, what a perfect place to set a book about magical children in the united states, right in the heartland of america. >> you're not in kansas anymore. treasure, what's your question? >> my question is, why did like what inspired you to write this book? >> the first thing i thought of was i wanted to write a book about magical children and never

use the word "magic" because i wanted everyone to feel and to know that this american quality that we have of perseverance and talents belongs to everybody, anybody can access that. >> it's all within side of you. >> it's all inside of us. >> spencer, you look very relaxed. we like that. have you a question? >> yeah. my question is why did you choose for them to get their savvy at age 13? >> age 13. well, i chose 13 because it's the first year you're a teenager. so it's the transition from being a child to a teen, and there's all kinds of changes involved in this book, and change can be hard. and so i wanted to use the first teen year to make it big and important. >> all right. danielle, how about you? >> what made you want to write the book in the first person? >> oh.

i think it's so much more personal to write in first person and you really get a sense of someone's struggles. because we all have struggles and challenges as we're growing up. when you write it in first person you really get to see inside somebody and what they are experiencing and watch them change from the inside. >> delroy, what's your question? >> my question is what made you come up with each person's savvy? >> that was really, really fun. it is so fun to be able to imagine all kinds of abilities and so the first one, the brother, fish, who created a hurricane on his 13th birthday, that just came into my head all on its own. >> i like the fact that it was weather-related. that was fantastic. >> i think that's for al. >> tatiana? >> what made you come up with the names, like fish and mississippi and rocket? >> i wanted the characters who were part of the beaumont family

i am jennifer franciotti. baltimore county police are on the lookout for a man who is committing a disturbing series of sex offenses, and it is a situation that appears to be xo -- it appears to be escalating free. he exposed himself to a woman outside an apartment in catonsville. a man to be the same suspect similarly exposed himself, this time after breaking into her apartment. this should remind people to keep their windows and doors locked at all times, especially at night. police up to close the books on a dozen recent robberies with the apprehension of a single suspect. mark lomax confessed to burglarizing businesses in the charles village and fells point areas. his crime spree started on august 3 and did not end until this monday. police say that he hid the businesses more than once, including a retro clothing store. detectives say he actually
