captions paid for by nbc-universal television hello and good morning, everyone. i'm dan kloeffler. this morning we begin with paying tribute to ted y. after decades of public service, thousands of people gathered in massachusetts thursday to spend just a passing moment in the presence of their late senator. edward moore teddy kennedy. nbc's steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: hour after hour, they came by the thousands to the kennedy library not far from downtown boston. ordinary americans who wanted to pay their last respects to the senator they called teddy. many visibly moved as they filed by senator kennedy's coffin. >> well, i was completely overwhelmed, actually. >> civil rights and, you know, minimum wage and he really was a voice of the poor. and, you know, the common person. >> reporter: the line of waiting mourners stretched into the

with her family nearly two decades after she was kidnapped by a sex offender who would later father two children with them and hold them hostage in a backyard closure. nbc's jay gray has the story. >> reporter: it is an amazing, emotional story that shakes even veteran law officers. >> duggard was found alive in antioch. >> reporter: in 1991, jaycee was just 11 years old. her stepfather watched as she walked to a neighborhood bus stop. >> he pulled her in. >> reporter: investigators searched for a couple in a gray car, while her mom made an emotional plea for her return. >> and i want you to come home tonight safe and sound. >> reporter: that trip would take 18 years. the mystery began to unravel when campus police at the university of california, berkeley noticed registered sex offender with two young children.

he was called in for questioning and showed up with the kids and two adult women, one of them his wife, the other jaycee. >> from what they both said he fathered both children with jaycee. >> reporter: ultimately, investigators say, he confessed to the kidnapping. they were charged with conspiracy, kidnapping and child molestation. they uncovered another horrific twist. >> the seven of the residence revealed a hidden backyard within a backyard. the hidden backyard had sheds, tents and out buildings where jaycee and the girls spent most of their lives. >> reporter: jaycee is secluded again in the comfort of an area motel, getting reacquainted with her mom, who she hasn't seen in the last 18 years. jay gray, nbc news, los angeles. >> unbelievable. now here's a look at some other stories making news "early today" in america. in south carolina, police dash cam video shows why one officer lost his job. the cop was trailing a group of

teens on an atv. when they do pull over, the cop pushes him and hits him multiple times with a flashlight. he was fired after the police chief saw this video. deja vu. this captures the man's 22nd dui violation. the suspect failed his field sobriety test and was later found to have five times the legal alcohol limit. at the time he was pulled over, he had a revoked license and three warrants out for his arrest. florida residents are dealing with an unexpected effect of the depressed economy. this is it. vacant homes serving as prime real estate for massive killer bee colonies. a bee remover found 20,000 bees buzzing on one porch alone. without new homeowners moving in, his winged residents likely will continue to invade houses. a new wax sculpture of the late king of pop was unveiled in

los angeles. the $300,000 figure shows michael jackson in wardrobe laid out for the concerts he had planned in london. publicists claim that was crafted in england and brought to hollywood under, quote, heavy guard. good morning to you, dan. it's all about danny this morning. tropical storm danny almost died last night. there were there was no thunderstorms near the center of it. overnight the winds became a little more fair for it to develop. you notice some of the thunderstorms are actually near the center of circulation, at least in the northeast side, the first time on the north side. it looks like danny is going to maintain itself at least. we're not calling for any crazy amount. but it is still going to ride along the earn seaboard. rip currents the next two to three days and waves a little bigger, not like last weekend,

hoping to do something about prejudice against gypsies in romania, madonna found out how deeply those prejudices are held by some. yesterday she was booed at her concert when she said prejudices remained deep across eastern europe. >> there's a problem with tonight's drawing. we will correct the problem. in florida a lottery drawing is sure to have conspiracy theorists buzzing there. a lotto lady called for number 48 when there was no bouncing 48 ball in the display case. lottery officials claim it was there for a millisecond but later admitted the mistake and rolled over the winning jackpot. so now here's an early look how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens 9,580 after inching 37 points on thursday. nas daz rose 3 points.

the nikkei rose 60 points but in hong kong the hang seng dropped 1414 points. wall street may be having a summer slowdown but at least for now stocks are headed in the right direction. light volume and stocks already priced to reflect improving economic data brought a slow and steady eight-day streak for the dow, now its longest in two years. shares of boeing sent the index higher on thursday climbing 8% on news its long delayed dreamliner will take flight by the end of the year. aig, once the world's largest insurer, spikes 27% that the struggling company might reconcile differences about its former ceo. that move could mean an influx of cash from private investors to help the company make good on its promise to pay back $180 billion. a bit of a boost with quarterly earnings at the end of trading yesterday. pc maker shot up 6% after

reporting better than expected sales. labor department reported a drop in first-time jobless claims thursday. what surprised analysts was the bigger than expected decrease in number of americans continuing to file for benefits. it was the lowest level for continuing claims since early april. also out yesterday, a government report that the economy is shrinking less than expected. investors will get more news on that front today when data on personal income and consumer spending is released. toyota was the automaker that got the biggest boost for the cash for clunkers program but apparently not a big enough boost. it will end production at its plant in california, putting 4,500 jobs at risk. coming up, investors will find out how luxury retailers tiffany&company and hermez. one industry doing well in this company. stay, a modern dog hotel in chicago, averages 65 canine

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." in sports, last name michael vick took the next step in his long road back from prison to the nfl. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. it's been over two and a half years since michael vick played an nfl name. the vilified quarterback made his debut with the eagles. go to philadelphia. vick entered second play from scrimmage and shoveled a pass to shawn mccoy for a short game. his only pass downfield a bullet. a first down. it was only in for six plays. one of the receiver, perfect four for four through the area for 19 yards.
