over haul the financial's regulatory system. it comes on a first anniversary of the lehman brothers collapse. a colossal failure that helped trigger the worst economic crisis in decades. today's spoech will push forex panneded federal authority to oversee risk, and power to take control of failing institutions. it comes as the president continues to press his health care over haul. he showed new confidence on sunday to cbs that congress will pass, these are his words, a good bill. meanwhile, there's another debate brewing in washington this week as house lawmakers consider a resolution of disapproval against republican joe wilson. wilson shouted, you lie during president obama's speech to congress last week. democrats are planning to push that resolution unless the south carolina congressman apologizes again but this time on the house floor. he kutsz democrats of playing

politics. we've been hearing nbc's plan to shake up its primetime plan. tonight is finally the night. "the tonight show" with couple day taking center stage. he headliners jay key, rihanna and jerry seinfeld. gina, good morning to you. i know it's early out there but the excitement certainly building at this hour. >> reporter: oh, it certainly is. and i'm sure audience members are already lining up on the opposite side where jay's show used to be. not too far from where he used to tape "the tonight show." you know, dan, in his new time slot, let's face it, he is going to face pretty tough competition from the scripted dramas that have long been a staple from the final primetime hour. they are betting audiences will want to tune in to see a familiar face that's been bringing them laughs for the

last 17 years. >> we'll see you in september. >> reporter: it was barely three months ago that jaily leno said farewell to the "tonight show." >> it seems like 10 years ago. >> reporter: maybe because there have been near constant reminders about his move to primetime. >> yeah i'm ready to go on. i think the nbc hype machine has done its job. >> reporter: jay leno show will replace nightly dramas with an hour stuffed with even more comedy than his old show. >> people like the monologue, headlines, jay-walking, that stuff. and we have added new things as well. >> reporter: like a massive new studio still being tweaked last week in rehearsals. >> hello. can you fix that. hang on, we're not getting feed. >> reporter: the first guest on the new set will be leno's long-time friend jerry seinfeld. >> he's an icon especially here on nbc. it should make the premier easy. >>reporter: music is also

here's a look now at other stories making news "early today" in america. the coast guard rescued two men from a burning fishing oat off texas. a rescue helicopter already in flight spotted the smoke. the men were plucked from the life raft, one having suffered burns to 20% of his body. trappers in florida finally caught an evasive boa contributor. the slight 11-foot snake was first seen slithering through the streets eight months ago. they wrangled the 70-pound veeft near a condo complex. if that snake is not claimed it will go to a nature center for educational purposes. the nevada sky was dotted with some brilliantly colored balloons fort great reno balloon race. the event began 28 years ago when 20 balloons took to the sky. this year, 100 hot air enthusiasts joined the festivities.

good morning, everyone, and welcome back to "early today." i'm dan kloeffler. and here are some of your top headlines this monday morning. this weekend about 50 taliban militants were killed in nato air strikes in western afghanistan. that fighting aim after an ambush that killed three u.s. troops and seven afghan soldiers. two days after president obama imposed tariffs on tires from china, beijing is retaliating by launching investigations into american exports of auto products and chicken parts. now, that's seen as first steps toward imposing tariffs on those products. chinese analysts predicted today

natural rubber imports by china may fall 14% short of forecast thanks to president obama's decision to impose a tariff on 35% of chinese tires. hugo chavez says russia is lending $2 billion to buy weapons. chavez claims the purchase is in response to move more u.s. troops into neighboring colombia. the weapons deal was made on the same trip to moscow during which chavez made venezuela to recognize the independence of two breakaway regions in the country of georgia. and reports vary, but sometime within the next 24 hours, the iraqi journalist who threw his shoes on former president bush is expected to get a hero's welcome as he's let out of jail. it made him something of a celebrity in the arab world. now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day.

the dow opens at 6,605. s is examine p lost 1. nasdaq fell 3 points. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, the nikkei shot down 242 points. and in hong kang, the hang seng tumbled 229 points. on wall street this morning, investors will try to jump start a five-day winning streak that stalled on friday. but uncertainty from overseas trading, that may get in the way. in japan the nikkei sank 2% on the weight of a strengthening yen which it's away at the profit of imported goods sold abroad. the u.s. dollar higher monday at least for now as speculators booked profitses on bets against the currency. the uptick on the dollar sparked more slg in commodities after closing above $1,000. gold futures lost their momentum slipping a half percent during monday's trading. oil continued its downward slide after losing $4 a barrel

last week. crude settled just above $68 a barrel. back home, the price of a gallon of gasoline has been driven down by americans who aren't making the commute. the average price of self-serve is $2.59 on september 11th. it's down 5 cents from august 21st. looking ahead, investors will find out if americans are a little more willing to part with hard-earned dollars and help stabilize the economy. that's when a report on august retail sales is released on tuesday. economists do expect an increase of just over 1% after a drop in july. and finally, what do you get when you combine a roller coaster and french cuisine? a sky-high dinner in paris. for the next two days, fans of good food can enjoy fine cuisine, 165 feet in the air. but this is coming at a pretty steep price. one seat, this is one seat, costs more than $13,000.

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." in sports, the chicago bears versus the green bay packers is a classic nfl rivalry to start the season. the game certainly had it all. since it is september, though, about the only thing missing was snow and those bone-chilling temperatures. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. it was an exciting opening weekend for the nfl. here we go. we'll get right to it. begin in greenway with the bears and packers. this one went down to the wire. under two minutes to play. aaron rodgers with jens for a 50 yard score. green bay rallied to beat the bears, 21-15. brett favre made his debut for the vikes against the browns. third quarter, hooked up with percy harvin for six yards out. first touchdown for favre and the rookie harvin. check out the old timer in the

end zone. peterson ran for three scores. saints drew breeze had quite a day against the lions. six touchdown passes, two to jeremy shockey. six is the most ever thrown during week one of an nfl season. saints, breeze passed the lines. 45-27. lions lost 18 in a robach to 2007. carolina, eagles beat the panthers but lost part of that on this touchdown road. mcnabb fractured a rib. didn't return. he'll be evaluated today. michael vick not eligible to play until week 3. wild finish, broncos/bengals. kyle orton aired it out. pass deflected. look what i found. stoically handed a gift to score an 87 yard game-winning touchdown. broncos shocked the bengals, 21-7. tiger woods sixth victory of the year.
