pancreatic cancer monday. from his leading roles to his defiant fight against the disease, the actor, dancer, and cancer awareness advocate always showed off his best moves. george lewis reports. >> reporter: swayze leapt into hollywood stardom in 1987 with "dirty dancing." a role of a lifetime he'd been preparing for since he was a kid in houston. his mother, patsy, is a famous choreography who trained him at an early age. after his dancing ability led to broadway, he landed tv and movie roles. then came his big break. >> good. >> reporter: in "dirty dancing," he got to show off the moves he learned as a teenager and his acting chops, as well. >> nobody puts baby in a corner. >> reporter: it catapulted swayze on hollywood's a-list and the title of sexiest man alive

in 1991. >> opens doors in my life and makes people keep coming to my movies. >> reporter: he could still play the tough guy, but he was able to show his sensitive side. and he wasn't afraid to make fun of himself. >> and now, please welcome patrick swayze. >> reporter: in january of 2008, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and received a standing ovation on the stand up to cancer live television special. >> tonight i stand here another individual living with cancer. >> reporter: after months of radiation and chemotherapy, swayze was healthy enough to play the lead in a new a & e television series. >> you can trust your case file and me. >> reporter: it would be his last major role. >> i would love by the time i die to have a career like spencer tracy and dustin hoffman wrapped up into one. ♪ i had the time of my life >> reporter: and as patrick swayze was having the time of his life on the screen, he

managed to light up the lives of his many fans. george lewis, nbc news, los angeles. >> certainly will be missed. calling it an important first step, the obama administration is welcoming iran's decision to hold talks next month with six world powers to potentially discuss its highly contentious nuclear program. even with the scheduled talks, the first in more than a year, tehran continued along a defiant stance threatening to fend off any attacks against the nuclear facilities. iranian officials also tried to lower expectations the talks could eventually help end the development program. that's something tehran calls a quote inailenable right. there's now a $30 million bail in place for a man accused of kidnapping a northern california girl back in 1991 and keeping her captive for nearly two decades. at a monday hearing, the judge also ordered the suspect, phillip garrido to undergo a

psychiatric evaluation. the 58-year-old along with his wife face a combined 29 felony counts. technically even if garrido did come up with the multimillion dollar bond, he would not be released because the crimes were allegedly committed while he was on parole. now here's a look at some other stories making news "early today" in america. two cowboys in washington had a unique task. what you might call convenience store cattle corralling. they bolted off a parade route and dashed into a mini mart. the trip was cut short, they followed the livestock down the aisles and eventually herded the wayward beasts out the door. dash cam video from a squad car in new mexico doesn't show a cop chasing someone. that's because that someone, a suspect is behind the wheel. an officer was investigating an outdoor party when a party-goer jumped into the patrol car, the suspect took a two-minute joyride. he was later arrested telling

police he "thought it would be fun." tell that to the judge now. two 510 ton steam generators are slowly but surely on the move in pennsylvania. originally shipped from france, the pair are now on the road to the three-mile island nuclear plant. crews are using special trucks with 26 axles that weigh over 300 tons themselves. that convoy moves at a snail pace with the trucks topping out at 3 miles per hour. and in washington, a 12-year-old has reached rock star status. that's, well, at least in the video game world. he broke a guinness world record for most points in a game of guitar hero. asked if he'll transfer his skills, he says he'll be sticking to the video game instead. and now for a look at the weather, here's bill karins with the weather channel forecast. bill, good morning. you ever play guitar hero? >> i was thinking to myself, i feel old now because it's kind of like the first game

back to "early today," everyone, i'm dan kloeffler and here are your top headlines this tuesday morning. taking a break from his health care pitch, president obama was on wall street yesterday with some stern warnings for investors. a year after the collapse of lehman brothers, he told them not to revert back to the "reckless behavior" that led to the economic crisis. also urged them not to block new laws aimed at tighter regulation of the financial industry. a new poll shows that when it comes to health insurance by far most doctors support president obama's preference to give patients a public option for insurance coverage. the survey found that nearly 63% of physicians do want a public option to supplement private health care. only 27% want solely a private system. in germany, some scary moments for 73 passengers and crew aboard a plane there. the aircraft had to make an

emergency landing after problems with the landing gear. everyone, though, made it off that plane using emergency slides. fortunately, no one seriously hurt. in india, passengers simply horrified to watch a woman fall out of the tracks of a train. the train then passes right over this woman, somehow, though, she wasn't hurt and she was able to walk away safely from that. now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day today. the dow opens at 9,626 after gaining 21 points on monday. the s&p inched up 6, the nasdaq up 10 points. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei rose 15 points, but the hang seng fell 65 points. capping the one-year anniversary of the unofficial start of the economic crisis, investors are looking forward even with a trade dispute raising a few eyebrows. major market indices will open at their highest levels in nearly a year after a boost in

utilities and financial companies carried the day monday. although yesterday's 21-point gain on the dow was less than astounding, it is a big change from a year ago. that's when the collapse of lehman brothers sent the dow plummeting 500 points in just one day. remember that? investors have a trade dispute between u.s. and china. china has complained to the world trade organization after the obama administration ordered steep new tariffs on chinese tires for three years. although china may retaliate, analysts say a full blown trade war is unlikely while the two economies are almost completely interdependent. meanwhile, a judge has rejected a $33 million settlement between the sec and bank of america over the government's accusations of inadequate disclosure by the bank. it all stems from billions of dollars in bonuses paid out to merrill lynch employees just before the company was acquired by bank of america. at the very same time b of a was

being bailed out by taxpayers. beginning next year, home depot will begin selling martha stewart brand. it comes with stewart's deal with k-mart which has been in place more than a decade ends in january. federal officials are warning small businesses to prepare for the fallout from a new outbreak of swine flu. they're recommending streamlining the central operations, bracing for some staff shortages, and allowing sick employees to work from home. and speaking of taking days off, don't look at one 68-year-old missouri man. he is being honored for 50 years of service at the state's first mcdonald's restaurant. he's been on the job since 1959 and still works five days a week. pretty impressive. a stunning and historic tennis upset and a playoff preview, yankees versus angels. plus, tom brady shakes off rust when it counts. your early morning sports headlines are straight ahead. our tuesday forecast looks like summer from the west coast
