from a neighbor. an off-duty police officer responded and searched the area. he noticed the back gate was unlocked. police say the students decided to conduct a second search including the garage and found everything as it should be. >> the suspect was down. >> police say the suspect lunged at the student. he fatally cut the man. >> we do not believe there was criminal intent in this case. the student feared for his life and was defending himself. >> rice has an extension -- extensive criminal history. he had just been released from jail a few days earlier. we do not know what he was doing in the backyard. >> i do not think he was there doing a good thing given his
