those trapped in their homes. some six hours later, a much different picture. this is a live look at the area at this hour. much of the water has receded and residents are now preparing for the next that, the cleanup. >> that main burst. >> the six-foot wide water main quickly sent water. we have live team coverage tonight. john sherman is live with the details. david collins has stories of the residents forced out of their neighborhoods. >> we begin with john sherman. it was just after 5:00 when the water was flooding cars and

homes. the real work is just beginning. from the air, it was clearly a massive water main break moving west to east across dundalk avenue. by nightfall, the leak was stopped. >> people used good sense by and large. they stayed in their homes. we did have a few rescues of people who went out into the water. >> the specific cause is an undetermined but age is clearly a factor. >> we have had some issues with failing infrastructure around the city in some areas so until we are able to get its shutdown, we won't be able to determine what caused the break. >> now it is on to the damage. >> air is enough water in the basement, we have the fire department here on hand to actually pump out basements.

>> the state is already offering insurance assistance. >> the governor has made available the maryland insurance administration to help people process claims for property damage if you are having difficulty. >> the state highway administration has a big job ahead as well. >> the work involves repairing broken highway and all of the damage associated in that area but we are here first to make sure that jim smith has whatever assets he may call upon from the state of maryland to assist the hard-working people of dundalk. >> more than 100 homes have basement water damage and more than 800 have been without power. >> take a look at this. some residents were forced to get creative to get around the neighborhood. these folks used fishing boats.

workers also were checking on residents of by boat. david collins has the stories of residents impacted by this water main break. >> the police will be here all night. they are slowly reopening roads. water service has returned. when the torrent of water started filling their house, the first thing they grab was medication. >> everything was floating in my basement. >> we started barricading the basement which did no good because it came in so fast. everything was a floating. we stayed there and thought it would come take us out. >> emergency vehicles and pedestrians were the only traffic allowed in and out of the flood zone. >> did you escape it?

>> yes. >> they were startled by a big collector box explosion. many ran out of their homes into the street at the same time. >> it turned out to be chaos, totally chaos. everything went nuts in one minute. the power went out, water was flooding everywhere, children screaming like crazy. >> some say electrical fires with power lines dangling resembled snakes. >> i looked over and it was like a blue fire. i came over and told my dad and he said it stay away from it. >> this family considers themselves lucky. they are packing some comfort from home and expect to be back the next day. >> bge is working through the night. baltimore county fire will be on

hand to pump out the basement. >> for the homeowners affected, the real problem is all of the work ahead, how to salvage their property. >> we spoke with a representative and she offered several helpful tips to take into consideration. >> if you are still in your homes, move any valuables to a higher level of the house. it would be a good idea to take pictures any of the rooms because that would give you an idea of what the contents were. >> that you have to leave your home, take medications and prescriptions, insurance medication, any mementos, baby supplies, your wallet, credit cards, and your pet supplies. >> if you need a ride to a shelter tonight, here is the number to call.

they call it an argument that is creative fiction. included today was testimony from the state. lipscomb said he got a fur coat from the khmer. he also testified that he paid travel expenses for mayor dixon and chipped in more than $5,000 to cover a big shopping built in chicago. >> baltimore county police made six arrests tonight in connection of a stabbing with a teenager. that stabbing was in retaliation for another incident, and the mother of one of the teenagers is actually involved. >> the attack happened here back on september 12. police say it was several hours after a dunbar high school football game where a number of

players came out here and beat and stabbed a teenager and many of his friends. apparently, a mother drove some of them to the scene. >> she drove them to the scene and then they attacked him and his friends. >> she thought earlier in the week that her younger son was beat up and she was going to use her older son and a few of his teammates to seek revenge. witnesses knew the boys played for dunbar high school, leading to their arrest. >> there were recognized by some of the witnesses. >> police arrested the mother and several teenagers. we made at times to speak to

those involved but no one answered any of our attempts. we returned to the scene of the crimes where neighbors chased us off the property. >> this sunday, president obama will discuss health care reform. the interview was done at the white house today. david gregory asked the president about the recent controversy about race. >> this week, you had a former president jimmy carter saying most of this republican opposition against you is motivated against racism. do you agree with that? >> no. i said during the campaign that there are still some people who think through the prison of race, absolutely. sometimes they vote for me and

>> a teenager has been charged in the arson of the wildfire last month. charges were filed against the 13-year-old boy who they say started the fire on august 25. his name was not released and he is not in custody by the district attorney says he must show for an arraignment in september. he could be sent to a juvenile facility until he turns 25. authorities continue to search the property in connection with the disappearance of two young girls to decade ago. police dogs recovered a bone and picked up a set of what could be human remains. an analysis is underway to see if the bone is human. they were arrested last month

and charged with the kidnapping and rape of jaycee dugard. they are pleading not guilty and the case. >> we still have other things to pursue before we can walk away from him as a potential suspect. >> the search will be halted over the weekend but will be resumed on monday. >> staff members of one baltimore county school call it a dream come true and the much needed service to their students. the dundalk elementary school wellness center opened its doors for hundreds of students who live and learn in southeast baltimore county. health officials say the goal of the center is to make sure students get the health care they need and deserve. >> it will deal with children who have as much issues, provide -- so they do not have

some of those cooler temperatures are developing in pennsylvania. they are holding to the 60's on the coast. it will feel like fall in the mountains this weekend. mostly clear skies around daybreak. 50's and low of 60's to start our weekend off in the morning. very little moisture with this front. just a little sprinkle as this sinks down into northern virginia. high pressure follows the front right out. that is the picture of a beautiful saturday around here with light northerly winds, low and humidity, and comfortable temperatures. a beautiful day on sunday. more clouds crowding in on monday. picture-perfect. hopefully you can get out and enjoy some bright, sunny skies.
