of making false statements and the stealing from suspects. he is a 16-year veteran of the police force who was assigned to a task force. court documents allege he took money intended for an informant and stole jewelry from a suspect. the baltimore man walked to a fire station looking for help but found the building empty. tonight, he is dead and fire officials are investigating. he arrived on tuesday morning at the fire department by the staff members on to the left the fire house to have equipment repaired. someone called 911. the man was pronounced dead at the hospital. his cause of death is still unknown. >> maryland's unemployment rate is just above 10 -- 7%. some sectors are hotter than others.

the largest employers just got the green light to hire more people. lowell melser has that story. >> we have been doing a lot of stories on the unemployment here in maryland. the current unemployment rate is 7.2%. state officials tell us that things are slowly getting better. johns hopkins university judge received $140 million in stimulus money which will mean more jobs coming into the university. >> we will be helping people and making the world a better place. at the same time, we can hire people and kickstart the economy. >> johns hopkins university officials react to receiving grants from the federal government worth $114 million. the money will be used mostly for research but will lead to a significant increase in jobs. they have hired 30 people mostly

in the research field with 15 positions still open and many more to come. the grants will allow the university to keep its staff and move employees to other projects once the current ones and. >> we might have had to lay people off. >> we are doing better than other states but there are still some challenges with people who are out of work getting back to work. >> the day are talking about maryland's 7.2% unemployment rate and says the grants are a positive sign for baltimore's largest employer, pointing out it is situations like these that will bring down the unemployment rate to more normal averages. >> the right policies are in place. there is an investment in funds that drives the economy.
