to meet on national security. despite all the change in the air, one thing will remain. protests on the streets of pittsburgh, they are expected to continue today. nbc's mike is live in pittsburgh for us this morning. mike, good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning, dan. how are you? the streets behind me of course are quiet and empty now. i shouldn't say of course. because overnight there were a number of clashes between protesters and police. it started yesterday afternoon. we're told now just before we went on the air, dan, there have been at least 50 arrests. 24 yesterday, 26 overnight. these clashes that began with the first so-called peoples uprising yesterday, an unpermitted martha was broken up by police. more than 4,100 uniformed personnel here from pennsylvania and pittsburgh. cost $19 million for security for this event in pittsburgh. all the arrests, we're told,

were for minor infractions, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, that sort of thing. a lot of those arrested still being processed right now. today will be this martha will take off at noon. this is a march with a permit and will probably have the biggest crowd we will see, although the crowds of protesters have been much smaller an anticipated. there's been a suggestion that there be at least 100 targets identified for actions for protesters to get attention. all that happening this morning as this day unfolds. >> very unusual to see that kind of video right here in the united states. it looks very draj. seems like they have everything under control. >> reporter: that's the point, to make it look dramatic. exactly. >> mike, thank you for that this morning. meanwhile, president obama is placing world leaders for adding what he sees as new momentum to theest to rid the world of nuclear weapons. in a unanimous vote, they

adopted a u.s. resolution for nonproliferati nonproliferation. the resolution reaffirms previous sanctions by the security council. it was only the fifth summit level meeting in the panel's history and the first ever to be chaired by a u.s. president. a 24-year-old afghan immigrant with alleged ties on al qaeda has been indicted on charges of conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction. according to federal authorities, najjy beulah zazi had bomb making instructions on his computer hard drive. prosecutors say over a two-month period, zazi purchased gallons of chemicals from a beauty supply store that can be used to build explosives. meanwhile, in a pair of unrelated cases, 25-year-old michael fenton is under arrest in illinois. and in texas aor dane yann national is in custody for his

alleged plot to bomb a downtown dallas sky scraper. in both these cases, undercover fbi agents provided the men with fake explosives. this sunday in a "meet the press" excusive, former president bill clinton shares his thoughts on some of the challenges the country is facing, including the xheshecon the battles for health care reform. that's this sunday right here your local nbc station. >> now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america. california police released video of a brazen shooting there. at the top of the screen, the suspect can be seen eating when a car drives by, he stands up and unloads seven shots on that vehicle. as calmly as he stupid, he then sits down and finishes his meal. authorities arrested that shooter for assault with a deadly weapon. in miami, two bandits on the loose after robbing an armored truck guard in broad daylight.

the guards walks out of a convenience store when two suspects in ski masks intercept them. they did make off with that bag of cash. thousands of gallons of fuel exploded at a fuel diesel plant. over 30 units responded to that blaze which nearly leveled that facility. officials say 3,000 gallons of methanol and 4,000 gallons of biodiesel ignited to cause that massive explosion. elsewhere in florida, in a scene more frequent around the country, a black bear stumbled into a neighborhood. the animal roamed throughout the neighborhood before finding his garbage of choice. new housing developments in that area are destroying bear habitats and it's causing more direct interaction with humans. now for a look at the national and regional weather, here's ryan phillips from wtvj

miami with the weather forecast. >> good morning to you. we have nice weather in store for the upcoming weekend. still locations in the country that remain unsettled. overall weather pattern all week long hasn't changeded that much. rains south and east not moving all that much. the northeast will be mighty fine. the southeast, a chance to dry out. out across the mississippi valley, still more showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. here to the mid atlantic, at least first thing this morning, some showers and thunderstorms down towards d.c., extending back to west virginia, western virginia, norfolk and virginia beach. that's where most of the active weather is. 56 in detroit. 59 in boston. 63 this morning in new york. up to about 72 in the big apple. 86 with storms in charlotte. plenty of heat and humidity with highs into the lower 90s. that's a check of the forecast across the region. now a look at the weather close to home.

>> good morning, and welcome back to "early today." i'm dan kloeffler. here are some of your top headlines this morning. in washington, d.c., ruth bader ginsburg was hospitalized overnight after feeling light-headedness and fatigue. it came after ginsburg, who underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in february, received treatment for under deficiencde. ginsburg was knitted as a precaution. a spacecraft orbiting mars snapped pictures of ice on the red planet. halfway between the north pole and the equator. it's a bit of surprise for researchers as well. they didn't anticipate ice so far south. in indonesia, clouds have been flock to go see a newborn weighing in at 19 pounds, 2

ounzs. the size the likely result of his father having diabetes. she and the child reportedly in pretty good conditions. students at stanford university may catch a case of the blues after a centuries old condition. h1n1 the school nixed the full moon on the quad, where seniors kiss freshman at midnight under the first full moon of autumn. some called it a, quote, recipe for disaster >> and now here's a look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 9,707 after dropping 41 points thursday. the s&p lost 10. nasdaq fell 23 points. in tokyo, the nikkei shot down 278 points. while in hong kong the hang seng dipped 26 points. still a little sore over the fed's plans to start pulling back its stimulus measures.

investors were quick to sell after disappointing economic data came out thursday. an unexpected dros in existing home sales reminded wall street the road to recovery is full of potholes. analysts were caught off guard when a report said sales had actually dropped by 3% in august. stocks had started higher in the morning thanks to good news on jobless claims. economists had expected to see an increase in the number of newly laid off workers. turns out that figure fell 21,000 to the week before. still, though, that bit of good news wasn't enough to offset the bad, including the rising dollar, sending the price of oil 4.5%, closing just under $66 a barrel. shares of chevron took a bit of a hit losing nearly 1%. caterpillar moved 2% lower and led the day's losses on the dow. hewlett packard ceo said his company is poised to profit from sales but not enough, according

to wall street. shares of the pc maker came in below estimates. investors react to research in motion's late day business report. the blackberry maker missed its numbers. and finally, you might not believe in a luck of the irish, but you could certainly bet the makers of guinness do. tom jones headlined festivities to mark the brewery's 250th anniversary thursday. bono also lifted a pint in irish pride to toast the black brew downed in 150 countries worldwide. so bottoms up early this morning. the 100-loss season creeping closer to a wild card. and the great one says so long to phoenix. plus, the gamecocks of south carolina celebrate their biggest
