basara. >> and i'm stan stovall. thank you for joining us for 11 news today. >> first a check of your forecast with sandra shaw. a little rainy out there right now. >> yes. the question is is it going to improve in it's going to improve later today. it's been a complicated weather pattern for us. we were talking about the slow-moving front but it's made very little progress. carry your umbrella. the showers will move out of here by midday then we'll be left with a mix of sun and clouds. breezy northeast winds 10-15 miles an hour. then a cool rainy day for saturday. and some heavy showers are possible saturday night. right now let's find out if the slick roads are affecting the morning commute with sarah. >> when the roads are slick, not dealing with problems at the moment but volume is building around the area.

starting to see a bit of a slowdown but hopefully if you can keep your speeds down this morning you'll be ok. >> in the green on the area roadways. 11 minutes on the -- here's a live view of the beltway right at the bw parkway. problem-free. and we're looking at a smooth ride in the white marsh area. once again, though, you can see the roads are slick. so be careful. mindy and stan good morning. >> our big story this morning an off-duty officer spent the last several hours in surgery after being wound indeed a fire fight with would be robers. >> jennifer franciotti is live at mount sinai hospital with an update. >> the officer was trying to enter his own home just after 10:00 p.m. last night when police say he was approached by three men, all of them carrying

guns and a gun battle erupted. the officer was hit multiple times and taken here to sy ney hospital where he immediately underwent abdominal surgery. according to the police twitter website the officer came out of surgery around 3:00 a.m. and transferred to the i.c.u. listed in criminal condition. we don't know right now if any of the suspects were hit but police last night were questioning two people of interest. we hope to have more for you as soon as that information becomes available. jennifer franciotti wbal-tv 11 news. >> it was a very trying day yesterday for members of the baltimore county police force they mourned the death of one of their fellow officers. on black rock road in butler before 2:00 p.m. 32-year-old officer jason simmons was on his way to work when he somehow lost control of his pick-up truck on a sharp turn on a wet roadway.

the truck flipped over and he was trapped inside. >> it's a double great loss because this is the stepson of lieutenant mike hall who died last august so this is a very deep wound for our law enforcement family and also for the family of jason simmons. >> officer i'm mons was a seven-year veteran of the force and survived by his wife and a 6-year-old son. >> amid the tragedy fire crews and police transtrying to work on ways to cut costs without furloughs. the city is trying to squeeze $8 million out of police and fire departments. the chairman says he wants to hold the city to a no-furlough clause in the contract and instead implement other measures that he says could save $5 million. >> we could take compensatory time or overtime and cuts until

the furlough pleands and when it ends we expect this would stop as well and it would protect our younger officers from being laid off and protect all of us from being furloughed but more importantly it keeps the cops on the street for the taxpayer. >> there are 1,300 patrol officers in the city. >> baltimore police deticktive faces federal charges for making false statements and stealing from suspects. he was a task force officer for the d.e.a. trafficking area and a criminal complaint alleges the 16-year veteran received several items including clothing from the hotel room of a person who had been arrested and arranged for informants to give -- get paid for information then give half the money to him. >> i hope people will on the one hand recognize that we're on the job but also recognize that the majority of police officers you deal with on a daily basis are

honorable men and women who are just as offended by this conduct as we are. >> he is currently on home detention and scheduled to be back in court next month. >> police are investigating a deadly stabbing. when officers arrived just after 5:00 a.m. this morning they found a woman suffering from multiple stab wounds and pronounced dead at johns hopkins hospital. >> an anne arundel man accused of participating in a child pornography ring is released after turning himself into authorities yesterday. investigators say they recovered dozens of videos and child porn inside his cork barry lane home, if convicted ferguson could get up to 73 years in prison and fined over $ 100,000.

>> president obama is set to announce that the g-20 will replate the g 7 and g 8 in guiding the economy. >> the obamas welcomed the g-20 leaders to pittsburgh a summit that will claim the lead role in the world economy. tim quite they are in said a shift in their say makes sense. >> given the change of balance in activity in the world and having that shift occur to countries who have for a substantially period of time have been among the fastest growing economies in the world. >> there are calls for g-20 nations to phase out sub cities for fossil fuels and limit bonuses paid to bankers to curb huge risk taking. the u.s. is onboard with the new rules. >> we want it to take effect now

>> a look at m & t bank stadium this morning. still mild. for the game on sunday what's it going to be doing? we're going to try to break down the timetable for you. showers all around the area this morning associated with a slow-moving front which we had been talking about. just to our south this morning over southern maryland. later it will head down to carolina. should be only a morning-type event and then should clear out and become nicer. as i mentioned we're in the 60's across the board and in central maryland. into the mid 60's and rainy here

in central maryland and baltimore 71-75 this afternoon. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds and winds will pick up. actually a pretty decent friday afternoon but enjoy it while you can. the start to tomorrow not going to be so good. as far as the normals, record high set in 1970 and on this date in 1963 a 35-degree record low set so two extremes for the record highs and lows. we're going to be normal tonight 53. a partly to variably cloudy skies. throughout saturday the clouds thicken and heavy rain is possible on saturday night. here's what's happening. this morning this front is slipping to the south slowly so we'll see the clearing temporarily and this takeover mississippi valley will be moving to the ohio valley pulling all this moisture up along with it so we'll see a chance for heavy-type showers

saturday night into sunday morning. see these hit and miss showers through tomorrow into the day. cloudy tomorrow and cooler in the mid 60's. but then we see heavy pockets of rain with the blue indicated by sunday morning 7:00 a.m. but by midday sunday this model is showing it's clearing out. reafls gametime 1:00 p.m. so looks like the general time will be clearing by gametime. as the afternoon progresses, 79-78. all a timing thing. breaks down your weekend forecast. as we start next week warmer on monday with a slight chance of inc. showers, maybe a storm and then cool wednesday, and thursday. >> still looking at a pretty nice ride out there. thankfully no incidents to report. in terms of what else is going on, building volume and it is slick out there.

want to take it slow this morning. 52 miles an hour on belair road and southbound jfx after the beltway. 62 out to fort mchenry heading ssh on 75. the harrisburg expressway all equally smooth at this hour. nine minutes, your drive time on 895. five minutes on southbound 95 from the 895 split to the fort mchenry. a quick look at traffic, if you're going to heat out at liberty running smoothly but building on volume. that's the latest. >> taking a look at some of our top stories this morning supreme court justice ruth bader ginsburg is recovering in a washington hospital after becoming ill in her chambers. the justice reportedly began feeling light headed after

receiveing a iron treatment. she was taken to the hospital as a precaution. >> a jourdainian teenager is in custody after he tried to set up what he thought was a bomb in front of a dallas sky scraper. he had been in contact with undercover agents and they gave him false bombs and he now face as possible life sentence. >> and by the end of the day governor duvall patrick appointed paul kirk to fill seat of the late ted kennedy. kirk will be sworn in later today but will only serve until voters cast their ballot in a special election to be held in january.

>> in this morning's "consumer alert" chrysler is getting ready to ramp up production. the company's board of director is scheduled to get a five-year plan from its c.e.o. if they approve it the plan will go to the obama task force and they want to get their 2011 models ready for the market. congress is trying to get a jump on credit card companies' plans to raise their rates. barney frank and another is introducing a proposal to accelerate the credit card act keeping companies from changing their terms before the act takes effect if it passes the new law would take effect before december. >> and twitter will get help and colleges and universities say they are being flooded with requests for financial aid. more in the bloomberg business report. >> good morning in a survey release indeed a conference

colleges say the resession is plunking them with requests for financial aids. colleges have a finite supply of aid and if the economy doesn't improve they'll have difficulty meeting demand. watching event independence pittsburgh investors will be watching for signs on whether world leaders at the g 20 summit will change measures or come up with new measures to sustain economic growth. existing home sales showed unexpectedly dropped in august and the bloomberg maryland index also drop. the maker or lowry seasonning, mccormick missed the bloomberg analyst estimates. and tweet on the street about twitter. close to an agreement that would give it $100 million in fresh funding from the seven new investors and some of that money is coming from the baltimore area.

there's a front sliding to the south. variably cloudy. breezy, 71-75 by later this afternoon. winds northeasterly 10-15 miles an hour and dew points are going to lower. that's temporary because tomorrow more showers coming in, some heavy. a timetable coming up in your seven-day forecast. >> our big story a baltimore city police officer is recovering this morning from the first round of surgery after being shot off-duty in what appears to be an attempted robbery. jennifer franciotti joins us live from mount sinai hospital with more. >> the police officer was off-duty trying to go into his own home at high gate when he was approached by three armed men when according to police a gun battle broke out. the officer was able to return fire. the officer himself was shot multiple times rand underwent the first round of surgeries

overnight abdominal surgery and we're told he is in critical condition in the i.c.u. at this point police are talking to two people of interest and we don't know if a suspect was injured or taken into custody but this is an ongoing investigation. this all unfolded just after 10:00 at the officer's own home as he was trying to enter approached by those three armed men. jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you. the first full day of the g-20 summit gets underway in pittsburgh. world leaders there to discuss the world global economy. >> meanwhile 11 news bureau reporter nicole killion joins us live from pittsburgh with the latest. good morning, nicole. >> good morning to you stan and mindy and president obama is expected to make a comment about the expanded role of the g-20. >> brushing off drops from a light rain, president obama and the first lady welcomed g-20

leaders to pittsburgh. he hosted -- puting the global economy on the path to recovery. >> we are not going to walk away from the greatest economic cites sis since the great depression and leave in place the tragic vulnerabilities that caused this crisis. >> tim quite they are in says they are going to limit executive compensation and toughen standards on banks and addressing global imbalances. >> the key to the recovery and growth takeover next decade or so in the world economy is tied up with this problem of global imbalances which created the problem in the first place. you know, in a nutshell, the u.s. doesn't save enough. >> as the high-level discussions continue so do the protests. tear gas was fired that the one as demonstrators clashed with police. >> more than 40 people have been

tuesday morning apparently looking for help with a medical condition. fire officials say the staff members on duty left 10 minutes prior to have some equipment repaired and the man was eventually taken to mount sinai hospital where he passed. >> the controversial westboro baptist church that protest at soldier's funerals with inflammatory signs against gays. they have set aside a lower court decision to award a man after church members demonstrated outside his son's funeral. they agreed appealed the protest s being protected by the rights of free speech. >> just a few weeks into the school year and city schools already have their first confirmed case of the swine flu meanwhile the seasonal flu is already having its own impact on schools in baltimore county.

tim tooten has the details. >> a student here at montebello elementary school is suffering from swine flu. that's the word from city school officials. a student has a confirmed case of h 1 n 1 flu, the student is being treated and is not in school, the building will be thoroughly cleaned according to the processes established with the health department. end quote. concern over h 1 n 1 has circulated with schools keeping a close eye out for sick children and more than 200 perry hall middle students were sent home this week because of school symptoms. >> with her immune systems i don't want her to get any sicker than he already is. >> school notes are issuing this one asking parents to keep kids home until their fever has broken to make sure they aren't contagious. >> students feel better and

according to our speed crens sore. also looking at a pretty heavy ride on the beltway. nothing major on the jfx. harrisburg expressway looks good. 11 minutes your drive time to be outer loop north side. 10 minutes on southbound 95 from the beltway southwest to 92. and we have some delays in place as you can see there and another delay in the white marsh area heading southbound. slick roads. be careful out there. >> slick roads because we are seeing light showers around the state, that should be out of here by noontime. 71 to 75 this afternoon and we're going to be considerably drier. nice dry swath of air moving in behind this front so 10-15

have an accident we're tracking and we're going to try to find out what lanes are blocked. we'll continue to monitor this situation. meantime fur going to be heading out to route 24 in the area of 59 we're also checking out an accident there. 95 looks good in this area but at 24 and 95 watch for delays developing. we'll switch over now to this accident scene at timonium. delays on 75 as you make your approach to the beltway. looking at speed censors, delays as you make your approach to the west side. >> we are dealing with a very active h.d. doppler this morning. light rain falling but pretty much a decent amount of it that's encompassing the state. the heaviest amounts are toward we've. there's a front that's going to slowly move to our south and

later it will be out of our neck of the woods. taking a look at current temperatures, we're still in the mid to upper 60's across the board. and showers are lingering. but this afternoon winds northeasterly at 10-15 miles per hour and in the 70's. so variably cloudy but we're going to dry out a little bit. as far as the normals, 97 set back on september 25, 1970 and in contrast the low of 35 was set in 1953. tonight, since we have that drier air coming in at least temporarily we're going to be in the 50's. winds 10-15 miles per hour but by the weekend the front is going to get fourth our south today but re-emerge and lift to the north tomorrow so this area of low pressure which is now well to our west in the

mississippi valley is going to move into the ohio valley and through our neck of the woods so timetable-wise by saturday night heavy rains are possible and throughout tomorrow we're going to be mostly cloudy and considerably cooler with highs in the 60's so heavier rains start at 8:00 or 9:00 and this blue patch of rain will get through here by sunday morning and then we will start to slowly clear out so by 4:00 p.m. sunday afternoon we're high and dry and looking good. the game time especially around kickoff, will the showers be out of here? even if there is a wet start by the end of the game we should be clearing so 75-78 for the ravens-browns this weekend. into the weekend forecast by next week we start things out warmer, mostly sunny 81 and after that windy and cooler tuesday and wednesday and thursday the highs in the upper 60's below normal. >> thank you sandra.

time now for a last look at our big story this morning an off-duty police officer is recovering after being caught up in an armed robbery. jennifer? >> good morning. attempted armed robbery happened at the officer's own house according to baltimore city police the off-duty officer was trying to enter his home on high gate just after 10:00 p.m. when he was approached by three armed men and a gun battle broke out and we're told the officer was able to fire and the three suspects 0e7d fire and the officer was hit multiple times and taken to mount sinai hospital where he under went the first round of abdominal surgery. he is in i.c.u. listed in critical condition. we know police last night were questioning two people of interest in this case. this is an active investigation and we hope to have more on 11 news at noon.

nfl of today versus the nfl of you knights, butkus and brown. there is no denying peyton manning is a great player and a future hall of famer and worthy of every accolade. what is still in question is why the annapolis and baltimore colts continue to be linked. it is a disservice to both the city of annapolis and baltimore and the nfl needs to separate the two franchises once and for all. records are clearly made to be broken and not even peyton manning has come close to consecutive games and touchdown pass and if he does it will be his record alone however today we believe the mantle of the the greatest colt of all time is to be shared with an asterisk. peyton manning is the greatest colt in hoosier state but next time you go to a ravens game be sure to salute the greatest baltimore colt of all time.
