wasn't getting anything out of it. last week spending time with dave stockton helped me on these greens. i've putted these greens phenomenal this past week. i feel so grateful. >> will this motivate you more to win the fedex cup next year? >> it's a year away. i enjoy this event. i enjoy the fedex cup. i'm looking forward to the presidents cup, the off-season. spend a few months with some down time and get ready for next year and make 2010 a special year. this was a -- this wasn't a banner year. this certainly makes it a much better year than it was. i'm looking forward to the off-season, but more than that, i'm looking forward to 2010 because i think i have direction in my ball striking as well as my putting. >> congratulations on a great win. >> thanks, mark. >> dan? >> jimmy? >> mark, thanks very much. a little flash of humor there from mickelson as we take a look at the final fedex cup bonus distribution standings. tiger woods with the $10 million paycheck. phil mickelson with a performance today comes in

second. let's go down to dan hicks. >> thank you very much, jimmy. for the second time, the commissioner of the tour mr. jim finchum will give the fedex cup to tiger woods after sitting out last year with a knee surgery. i'm turn it over for the presentation. >> thank you, dan. tiger, you did everything that the cup design of the program is supposed to make you do. you played really consistent in the regular season. you won five times. you played great in the playoffs with that -- including that incredible win at chicago. and then you did what you had to do this week here at the tour championship. congratulations on your second cup. >> thanks, tim. >> tiger, what does this mean? it represents a body of work during the course of a long, long season. lots of rounds, lots of golf normally at a time when you don't play this much golf. how does it feel to lift this cup for the second time? >> the whole idea is to be consistent. you know, the entire season and try and position yourself the best you possibly can for the playoffs. this year i've played well.
6:02 pm
you know, i was very consistent. when i didn't win, i was in the top ten. so i kept accumulating points. and then, you know, i'm in the playoffs. i played pretty good actually. you know, i was very consistent. as i said. but only thing is i wish i would have gotten a few more ws this year. >> put the cup up here for a second. we've got johnny miller who's moved into the scene here. tiger, you can just stand right here. you don't need to bother to take a seat. johnny, fire away at tiger. >> a couple of months coming back from that right acl right on the left leg and worked hard to rehab that and won 6 out of the last 17 events, which is not too bad. surely you would have liked to have won one of the four majors. but you've got to be pretty proud of this year. >> absolutely. the whole year was an unknown going into the year. i didn't know anything. i didn't know how the knee would respond. a lot of unknowns early in the season, and to have played as well as i have and as consistently as i have the entire year is something i'm very proud of.
6:03 pm
wish i could have got a major in there. but, you know, i was consistent this year, and hopefully next year i can put together at the right times. >> i noticed this year i thought you're almost like a virtuoso, hitting a lot of lower fades, hooks, working the ball all over the place. you have really worked on a lot of trajectories, haven't you? >> yes, my game feels much more comfortable. i'm able to shift the ball both ways and shift my trajectory. that's something hank and i have been working on. now i have a leg to do it on. i couldn't do it before because my leg was limiting what i can do. now i feel so much more stable on my left side. >> i know you got one guy that's real confident right now. you know, phil, 20 birdies this week, number one in putting. all of a sudden he's got a lot more distance and a lot of confidence. that's going to be a good year next year, i think. >> yeah, you know, phil played well, and you know, he did the things he needed to do this week. unfortunately, i didn't putt well. and consequently, i didn't really push him. today was a perfect example of
6:04 pm
that. i had plenty of looks early, and i didn't make those. phil ran off and got away from us a little bit. >> it's not too often you have phil and tiger winning in the same day. >> it's certainly different. >> tiger, you got presidents cup coming up in a couple of weeks. it's the last really big, huge event, international competition. sb besides that, though, give people a sense of what you do in the off-season. do you actually take a look, close look, you and hank haney get together and assess what you liked you did, assess maybe what you think you can improve on. i know you're one of the guys who likes to look at it closely and improve in every phase of the game. what's one of the things in your mind to get ready for or look forward to in 2010? >> i'm very pleased with what we've done the entire year. the entire year i've gotten a little bit better. that's what you want to do. the leg's gotten much more stable. i feel confident in it now. it's starting to feel much more explosive again like it used to be. it's one of those things where i

still got some tournaments to play. presidents cup and then shanghai and australia, then i've got my t tournament. i've still got plenty of tournaments to play in and a lit traveling. but like we always do, look back at each and every event, how we can improve, what we need to work on and get better. now we have a whole body of work to look at. we'll make some adjustments going into next season for sure. >> you played a lot of golf. i know you're looking forward to going home to elin and the kids. have a good homecoming. tiger, once again, congratulations. the fedex cup champion of 2009. and on sunday next week. the third round of the senior players championship. coverage begins at 1:30 eastern time. sunday on nbc, sunday night is football night as the colts take on the arizona cardinals. bob costas hosts "football night in america" live from arizona. the coverage begins tonight at 7:00 eastern time. it's been a great week at east
