have put the western world on edge. nbc's brian mooar reports. >> reporter: iran is testing a series of missiles and testing the patience of the western world. ignoring this past week's tensions over its newly revealed nuclear facility. >> there's really a poke in the eye to those who think that diplomatic efforts and agreements and inspections are going to change the way that iran is going. >> reporter: u.s. officials want to put iran's nuclear ambitions on trial later this week at the six nation talks in geneva. >> they have to come to this meeting october 1st and present convincing evidence as to the purpose of their nuclear program. >> reporter: the critical players are russia and china, which have consistently blocked sanctions. now, russia is signaling it might be willing to get tougher if iran won't back down. >> and their economic problems are difficult enough that i think that severe sanctions

would have the potential of bringing them to change their policies. >> reporter: former president bill clinton said this week's meetings offer a unique opportunity for negotiators. >> they can more explicitly lay out things they may not be prepared to say in public yet about what the options are if iran continues down this path. >> reporter: for now, iran is showing no signs of backing down and virtually daring the world to do something about it. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. officials in the philippines say 100 people are dead in that country's worst flood anything four decades. amid the devastation, at least 5,000 people have been rescued, most having lost everything in that storm. the latest victims apparently died in a mud slide that happened north of the capital. the survivors join the estimated 430,000 displaced in the aftermath.

in what's being called a state of qaa lamb my in dozens of provinces they are freeing up emergency funds. by some estimates, 80% of manila is still underwater. >> there's a decades old legal case brewing anew this morning by roman polanski. the 76 could be extradited back to the u.s. sentencing for the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl back in 1977. at the request of the u.s. government, the oscar winner was picked up in zurich where he planned to attend a film festival in his honor. several countries are pushing for clemency. saying he fled the country only after the judge in that case 31 years ago failed to honor a plea agreement. now, here's a look at some other stories making news "early today" in america. folks in arizona are happy to see an eye sore gone after

demolition crews brought down this old building just in seconds. it was reduced just to a rolling cloud of dust. safety first, though. safety crews had to take out the old tinted glass. in georgia one driver fell victim to dangerous vandalism there. the man drove into a sinkhole after some one removed traffic cones. he wasn't injured. but to make matters worst, burglars broke into the stuck car and stole his radio. a motorcycle jumper in nevada shattered a world record and he did it twice. ryan capes broke the ramp to ramp record. apparently still not satisfied with the first jump so he lined up for a second shot and flew 316 feet. in california, dozens of women took a historic leap to

raise money for breast cancer. 181 participants, many of them survivors themselves of cancer, broke the record for most women sky diving in formation. it was called "jump for a cause" and it pulled in $300,000. and charlie brown may have found the great pumpkin at a colorado festival. at the fourth annual weigh up, they needed forklifts just to move thiessen tries. this winner took the prize and the state record, weighing in at 1,283 pounds. a lot of pumpkin pie. now for a look at the national and regional weather, here's nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. bill, good morning. >> how do you feel about toasted pumpkin seeds in. >> tasty. >> you put them in the oven. >> a pain to make. >> they always burn. very fine line. >> exactly. >> let's talk a little bit about your monday forecast. hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

the front has passed off the eastern seaboard. dropped the humidity in the southeast. then the storm behind it. this has fall written all over it. strong, gusty winds, leaves blowing up there in northern portions of michigan and also through wisconsin and minnesota this morning. that will sweep into the east as we go throughout the day today. the southeast, you're quiet. all your flooding is done with. they will come to their levels the next couple days in georgia. the rain and the cooler weather is in the great lakes today. that will be our travel trouble spots. we have storms sweeping through areas like cleveland. look at all the active lightning strikes, columbus, cleveland, lake erie. we will track the storms to pittsburgh and eventually buffalo during the morning today. so here's your forecast. showers and storms, detroit, buffalo, cleveland, columbus. we're dry from boston to d.c. and also through the southeast. and it will be warm for one more day. that's a look at your national forecast. now here's a look at the weather

good morning and welcome back to "early today," everyone. i'm dan kloeffler. and here are some of your top headlines this monday morning. for the first time since the 1980s, social security will be paying out more in benefits than it collects in taxes. the reason, recent job cuts and a jump in early retirement claims from laid off seniors. next year that deficit is forecast to hit $10 billion and 9 billion the following year. in germany, chancellor angela merkel has claimed victory, winning a second term in office. the nation's main left wing party was dealt a huge blow in that race, putting merkel's conservative party on track to form a new center right government. honduras, the interim leaders suspended several civil

liberties. they have given power to respect people without warrants and restrict the news media. that came after manuel zelaya who is hold up in the embassy called for marches to march the anniversary. op-ed writer for the "new york times" and speech writer for the nixon white house died. a pulitzer prize sapphire was a well-known conservative columnist. he was 79 years old. now here's an early look how wall street will kick off the day today. the dow opens 9,665 after dipping 42 points on friday. the s&p, that dropped 6. the nasdaq, that lost 16 points. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei tumbled 256 points and in hong kong the hang seng

tumbled 435 points. looking for guidance on whether to lighten the load or make the move before the next rally. worries over the pace of a u.s. recovery dipping into overseas profits sent the nikkei down 3% to its first close below 10,000 since july. leading the nikkei's losses, auto giant honda dropped 5%. back home, the lumberg survey shows gas prices have dropped nearly 7 cents in the last two weeks. on average, regular unleaded is now $2.52 a gallon. abbott laboratories plans to announce it will acquire prescription group sole say. the economic report investors will be watching this week, data from the labor department due out this friday. although analysts predicted the government's monthly tally of unemployed americans will rise,

in sports, the only thing sweeter than heading into the postseason at the top of the division is beating your arch rivals in the process. here's nbc's mario solis with an early look at all your sports headlines. hi there. good morning. the yankees wrapped up the american league east and did it against the hated rivals the boston red sox. to new york. pit it up in the sixth inning. yanks down 2-1. matsui with a shot to j.d. drew who can't make a catch. that scores. start spreading the news. yankees will have home field throughout the playoffs after winning their 11th a.l. crown since '95. to golf. phil mickelson won the championship but woods brought home the money. a $10 million bonus. to football, peyton manning and the colts giving arizona more than they could handle. put over 500 yards of total office with manny tossing four touchdowns.

"okay" magazine paid $300,000 for the nuptials. this comes from news channel 8 in portland, oregon in beaverton, some men rose to the challenge to help prevent sexual assault. for an event called walk a mile
