line. nbc's jim maseta is in copenhagen where president obama is lobbying on behalf of his hometown. jim? >> reporter: hi, dan. well, it's crunch time for the 2016 olympic games. who is going to get it? and in terms of chicago's bid, it sent in its two biggest hitters today to make a personal appeal. i'm talking about president barack obama himself, the first u.s. president ever to enter into this kind of fray, and his wife, the first lady, michelle obama. it really was a yin yang approach and presentation. michelle obama really at times almost in tears, appealing emotional emotionally two of the ioc members saying how she remembers watching nadeo comenici. barack obama meanwhile appealing more to the head that america is

a multiethnic society. that the state department and the white house and every organ of the united states would support back and deliver the best games ever if, in fact, chicago got that vote. but there's no sense at all at this point of course whether those two individuals even as persuasive as they are has swung the vote in chicago's favor. we won't know the answer until 1:00 p.m. eastern today. back to you, dan. >> all right, jim, thank you. well, if chicago beats the competition, the whole country could see an impact from hosting the games. the windy city, though, that would be center stage with a global spotlight. kristen dahlgren is live for a look at the city's push. the excitement has got to be building. >> reporter: you know, it really is, dan. if you watch the presentation, a lot of it focused on the people of chicago, including touching letters from kids and athletes that were free here. and you can bet a lot of people here were watching very closely.

revealed uranium enrichment plant. those talks include the u.s. president obama called the meeting in geneva a, quote, constructive beginning. in a setback for the obama administration, yesterday the house voted to block a plan to move terrorism suspects from the detention facility at guantanamo bay to the u.s. the white house had hoped to empty that facility by january 2010 and have those detainees face charges in american courtrooms. in indonesia, rescuers continue to search the rubble left behind by the 7.6 earthquake. the united nations puts the estimated death toll at 1,100. and the history of human origins may soon be rewritten. that's what the recent discovery of a new fossil. scientists unveiled a nearly complete 4.4 million-year-old fossil dubbed artie. it's lived so well before the famous 3.2 million-year-old

lucy, which until now was the earliest known skeleton belonging to a human ancestor. the dow opens at 9,509 after plunging 203 points on thursday. the s&p, that fell as well, 27 points. the nasdaq, that dropped 64 points. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei sank 246 points, while in hong kong the hang seng tumbled 5 # 9 points. mostly disappointing economic data got the first day of the fourth quarter off to a rocky start on wall street. stocks plunging to their lowest level in three months. disappointing results from an industry report on factory production raised questions in the minldz of investors skeptical over the strength of a recovery. meanwhile, u.s. auto sales tumbled 23% without the aid of the federally funded clunkers program. hardest hit, general motors.

its sales spiraled 45% for the month of september. adding to wall street worries, first-time jobless claims, reenforcing economists fears ahead of the monthly report on jobless claims. that's due out today. that number expected to notch higher from 9.7% to 9.8%. some, though, fear it could hit 10%. that would be the highest level since 1983. the combination of a dismal reports overshadowed the one bright spot on the day. that was an increase in consumer spending. the dow was hit hard across the board. all 30 components ending the day in the red. jpmorgan chase, that slid 5%. boeing down nearly 4%. weighing down the tech heavy nasdaq, microsoft dropped 3% after one analyst downgraded its stock all because of speculation it will miss its mark for end of year sales. finally, a sign of the times in italy.
