nobel peace prize. it is an announcement that stunned the world. that includes the president. he is the fourth u.s. president to receive this honor. >> it was an announcement that seemed to come out of the blue. >> the nobel peace prize for 2009 is to be awarded to president barack obama. >> president barack obama, winner of the nobel peace prize. the announcement shocked the world. perhaps no one was more surprised than the president himself. >> this is not how i expect to wake up this morning. im both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the nobel committee. >> the reason for this highest of honors? >> for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. >> the nobel committee noted the president's efforts to reduce nuclear arms, ease tensions with

the muslim world, and focus on diplomacy. the nominating deadline was february 1. the president had not been in office two weeks. even now, he has not had a chance to accomplish much on the world stage. he is fighting two wars, trying to push the middle east closer to peace, and push iran farther away from a nuclear weapon. >> we cannot tolerate a world in which nuclear weapons spread to nations, in which the terror of a nuclear holocaust and dangers more people. >> some believe that this is a slight to president bush, a wartime commander in chief who often found himself odds with other world leaders. others see it as an affirmation of hope and change that president obama wants to make his legacy.

deadly accident that happened just before midnight. brandon turner was trying to turn his vehicle are round -- turn his vehicle around. somehow, the vehicle got stuck on an embankment. they try to push the vehicle of the embankment and it slammed into a building. he was pronounced dead at the scene. a baltimore county man has been found guilty in the murder of his ex-girlfriend. he was convicted of intentionally running down her with her own truck. it happened last january. according to prosecutors, he found out that she was going to take back the truck, so he killed her to prevent that from happening. sheriff's deputies are searching for whoever sexually assaulted a woman at an area park. she was attacked around 6:00 sunday night when she got into her vehicle along stafford road. anyone with information about

that crime should call detectives. the house has voted to significantly expand a four decades old law to protect those attack because of their sexual orientation. federal prosecutors will be able to intervene in cases against people based upon their gender, sexual identity, or race. a city councilwoman will go on trial in december. a judge threw out motions to dismiss the campaign finance charges. she is accused of having to developers take a political poll on her behalf. she will face trial december 7. baltimore county executive is considering running for state senate. harris is expected to challenge
