-- from anne arundel county. it will make the tides running higher than normal as well. temperatures are at or just above the freezing point, and that is what has prevented much accumulation. we do think the storm that is still coming up out of the gulf coast region will produce its heaviest amount of snow late tonight into early saturday morning. as we go through the overnight tonight, that's no will get heavier and last probably right into saturday afternoon. we are talking about well over 2 feet of snow and the potential to see some amazing amounts of snow before it winds down tomorrow afternoon. we will check in more detail and db the snowfall totals in just a little bit. texas governor o'malley has already declared a state of emergency in maryland, giving -- >> governor o'malley has declared a state of emergency. david collins is at the highway

operations center in hanover. he has the latest there. >> we are waiting for the governor just like everyone else, but we ventured out to the airport today. it is good to say that there is no drama today at b.w.i. thurgood marshall airport, in part because one of the biggest carriers canceled all its flights earlier this afternoon. here is a sight you rarely see. this is usually crunch time for southwest airlines at dwi thurgood marshall. starting at 2:00 p.m., they canceled all flights, more than 100. she was catching the last flight out. the snow in the forecast does not bother her at all brigance i am used to that. -- i am used to that. >> the airline hopes to resume

at 6:00 p.m., the new bus service will stop operating. >> today's snowstorm is expected to bring as much as 2 feet of snow to the baltimore area. >> the mayor recorded a phone message advising residents to be prepared for a three day long storm event. >> we are expecting to get gusts up to 40 miles an hour, which makes it blizzard conditions and make it difficult for those out there on the streets to see what is in front of them. >> the new mayor said today that many city employees will be working a very long weekend. the city is getting some help. the national guard will provide 12 humvees to supplement the response of city police. >> we want to shifted back to david collins. governor martin o'malley is ready to give us the latest on what the state is doing to

combat the storm. >> the governor has already declared a state of emergency, giving the states flexibility to call in the maryland national guard which will assist police and other first responders. >> i want to bring you up-to- date on what we have been doing. we can see what mother nature is doing, which is a marked difference in the precipitation. it is coming down really heavy now. earlier today, we sent the emergency declaration. we have about 200 national guard personnel who are spread all around the state, mostly supporting local counties as the request help for their first responders in terms of having humvees available for any sort of emergency transport for paramedics as the secondary roads become more impassible.

at midafternoon today, the national weather service izzard 8 -- issued a blizzard warning for anne arundel, st. mary's, and calvert counties. we have snow emergency plans in effect for baltimore city. once again, given the magnitude of the storm, we are encouraging people not to go out tonight. we saw the biggest surge in traffic from about noon until 2:00. many employers let their employees go home at 2:00. it is now starting to come down pretty heavy. i encourage people to check on their neighbors. what else can i tell you that we did not tell you before? 2400 pieces of equipment out there, 2700 personnel. we have had one very unfortunate accident in harford county where

a van with two adults and three children appears to have run into the back of one of our private trucks. we hope and pray everybody will be ok from that, but it was a serious accident, which is why we emphasize again how treacherous is out there and how many pieces of equipment there are. i mentioned to 2400 peeps -- pieces of equipment from the state, but all of the counties have equipment out there. you have to be extremely alert and take it slow on these roads. if there is anything you can do to just a off the roads, that is best. you can log on to www.roads.maryland.gov to stay up-to-date on what is going on here. i am going to turn it over to beverly. >> you have been listening to governor martin o'malley talk

this is boston street here. what we have been noticing right now, normally boston street is a parking lot during rush hour. what you are seeing is a steady flow of traffic, meaning that some folks decided to stay home or get home from work little earlier. looking at this parking lot, there are a couple of plows ready to go to keep the parking lot clear. we are seeing mostly untraveled areas where a lot of the snow is sticking. we thought about an hour ago that this would be a non-event because the snow was really not sticking to the ground. tom said earlier that the temperatures are dropping and the snow is starting to stick to the ground. because of the state of emergency, baltimore city has gone ahead and they will let folks part in the city parking

the warning. we also have shades of red -- a little bit under the warning. winds are coming off the ocean and of the western shore of the bay, it will cause a strong winds up to 40 miles an hour. because of the very same winds, there is a flood threat at high tide because it piles the water up on the atlantic coastline and on the western shore up the bay. let's look at the doppler radar. here is the storm. it is all of snow in maryland and most of virginia. we do see some rain south and west of us at this stage. look at the entire storm to the south of us, down in the carolinas and out in kentucky and tennessee. from our latitude of into

pennsylvania and all the way back to ohio, indiana, and illinois, they are getting snow as well. this is a massive storm. >> we will see quite a bit of snow across that area as we head through the overnight and into tomorrow morning. so far it has not been a sticking because it is above freezing in many areas around the beltway. it is starting to get near freezing at martin state airport. even though you did not see this done today, the radiation gets through the clouds and warms the crowd began even though you did not see the sun today. high pressure to the north is supplying the cold and the storm coming up from the gulf coast is supplying the moisture. in result is a major storm. there's a seslight chance of slt

and rain down to the south of us. the snow will likely continue at least until the afternoon tomorrow, starting to wind down in the late afternoon and early evening. the powerful storm will move off the middle atlantic coast and out to sea, but not before depositing to be of snow beforiy areas. you can see here we start to see 18-24 in that pink shaded area and then 24 or more inches of snow center-right on the baltimore area and areas to the north and west. i the time it finishes up late saturday night and early sunday morning, we are talking well over 2 feet of snow in some of the colder areas north and west of baltimore.

it is a blizzard warning across the western shore of the bay. winds will gradually increase as we go through the night. we could have gusts of 45 miles an hour by late tonight. we will have near blizzard conditions here in baltimore late tonight and early tomorrow morning. it does not get much worse for baltimore than what we will probably see late tonight and tomorrow morning. winds continued to gust over 40 miles an hour, so we will get some blowing and drifting. temperatures may fall from 25 to 30 to the low 20's in the early afternoon. looking down the road, there may be another system coming our way.

northeast and rotates through the area. we will see that over night and through tomorrow morning. we do have blizzard warnings just out of baltimore on the western shore of the bay. ñrkent and sussex counties in delaware are under the blizzard warning as well. what is the definition of a blizzard? any times note reduces visibility to one-quarter mile or less, then you have blizzard conditions. it used to be that you had to have temperatures below 20, but that is no longer a qualifier. we also have flood warnings on the western shore of the bay. tides will run above normal, and there will probably be some flooding of low lying areas on the western shore of the bay

late tonight or early tomorrow. the snow is going to pile up quickly here through the overnight. we will be back in a couple of minutes with more detail. >> here is a look at some of the other top stories this hour. firefighters are trying to figure out what started a fire at the home in east baltimore where they found smoke coming from the second floor. everyone inside made it out safely. the police officer shot last night in northwest baltimore has now been released from hospital. detectives say the officer and his partner were involved in a shootout on oakmont avenue. the suspect was shot and killed. the officer was hit in the arm. he is a 28-year-old former read and iraq war veteran who has been on the force since 2007. howard county police are investigating a fatal accident involving a train last night.

they said the 41-year-old victim was homeless and speculate he either passed out or had fallen asleep on the tracks. his identity has not been released. >> in project economy, there is good news on the job front. the unemployment rate in january dropped below 10% for the first time in months. president obama hailed the news carefully. >> visiting a heating contractor in maryland, president obama was happy about the numbers. >> these numbers are cause for hope, but not celebration. far too many of our neighbors and friends and family are still out of work. >> with -- but 541,000 americans found jobs. retailers added 42,000, the most

>> police in new york city say and 9-year-old boy has been found dead in an upscale peninsula hotel just off fifth avenue in new york. his mother was found close to dead, lying next to his body. the woman's relatives contacted police saying they believed the boy was in danger. police think prescription drugs were involved. the woman is in stable condition. >> a mercedes suv belonging to actor martin sheen was found at the bottom of a hill in california. he reported it stolen. crews searched the area looking for victims, but no one was

-- in effect for the western shore. winds at 35 miles an hour or greater and visibility problems. strong winds coming across the bay and off the atlantic ocean will cause a blizzard conditions, because the water does not provide any obstructions to tone the wind down. the red area is the blizzard warning that is in effect until tomorrow. let's take a quick look at the radar. this is original view of what is going on for maryland and north port of into pennsylvania. this is an extensive storm system. the low pressure center is developing over georgia and south carolina at this point. the track is going to take is

skimming past cape hatteras and then out over the atlantic ocean. we are in the cold air north of the storm center, and that means snow. we will talk about how much, coming up. >> these are the biggest storms on the board ever in baltimore. february 2003 is when we set the record. it produced more than 28 inches of snow. that is now the standard in baltimore. the january 1922 storm was a big one, especially down in washington d.c. a lot of people are comparing this one to the february 2003 storm. the one this past december was #seven on the list. temperatures are still just at or above freezing in many areas, but getting colder as we speak. without the sun, the radiation

is still comes through the cloud deck. it will get colder overnight tonight, as the storm to the south begins to approach. one system has pushed into kentucky. it looks like this becomes the dominant feature and it moves off the carolina coast, rapidly strengthening overnight and pushing and all that moisture to our region. we think there'll be a mix to the south and east as the storm gets going, but the farther north and west you go, mainly snow. tomorrow morning is when it will become the heaviest. you could even hear some thunder as it rolls through tomorrow morning. as the system pulls away, even ocean city will get some snow tomorrow afternoon with

accumulations. skies will clear saturday night, and four super bowl sunday, we do think we will see some sun. blizzard warnings have been posted on the western shore of the bay. this is a computer model, putting down a swath of very heavy snow from the panhandle of west virginia of into northern delaware. in the lighter pink shaded areas, that is where you go over two feet. lesser amounts where we expect more of a mix and maybe some rain in southern maryland and the lower eastern shore. for our region, 15-24 inches possible overnight with gusts over 40 miles an hour, antipater settling back to the 20's.

the temperatures will not settle down much at all tomorrow. we could end up between 20 and 30 inches of snow, with lesser amounts down toward the bay bridge and onto the lower eastern shore and toward the coast. the forecast wraps up with a snowstorm that may become blizzard like at times. still breezy if not when the on sunday with a high of 29, a cold, dry monday, before the next storm arrives late tuesday into wednesday. it could produce some more snow in our area, with flurries lingering into thursday. >> some sad news for people in baltimore, the sweet tooth is closing. the bakery has been in business since 1921.
