we're back now with more of "today" on this monday morning, march 22nd, 2010. spring has arrived here in the big apple. that means spring showers. visitors don't mind. lot of spring breakers out, after gorgeous weekend here in the northeast. we're happy to have them here and happy to have you at home as well. inside studio 1a, i'm lester holt, along with al roker and natalie morales. matt and ann are off today. we've got it covered. don't worry. tiger talks f the first time since the november accident and the revelations of

infilities, tiger woods has answered reporter's questions about his affairs and his return to the golf course. he called his behavior disgusting and said he's working on his marriage. we'll hear more of what he had to say and have some advice for dealing with infidelity, if it happens in your own marriage. also ahead, looking for a fresh start in a new city, barbara corcoran's picks for the five most affordable and fun cities in america. plus if the warm weather is inspiring you to get in shape for summer, we'll tell you some food that is can help to fill you up and kick start your weight loss. first, since ann is off today, natalie has a check of our headlines. >> that's right. in the news this morning, president obama is expected to sign the health care bill as soon as tomorrow. the battle over that bill that passed the house late last night, 219-212 isn't over. there's a vote this week in the senate on changes made to get the bill passed and an effort has already begun to repeal the highly contentious legislation. israel's top stance on jerusalem will be in the white house spotlight tuesday when

president netanyahu meet with his president obama. israel's refusal to constrict construction in east jerusalem is straining relations between the two allies. president karzai has met with the faction and could signal a separate piece for the group that rivals the taliban. nuri al maliki is supporting calls for recount of the parliamentary election. his main competitor, iraq's president, has a slight lead in the march 7th elecon, which has led to numerous allegatio of widespread fraud. the government is warning spring break travelers to pack their patience. beefed up security in response to that failed christmas day bombing attempt over detroit will mean more scanning, swabbing and patdowns. berlin police today said they have arrested the suspected

mastermind of that dramatic armed robbery at a poker tournament two weeks ago, the uncle of one of the other suspects. they've yet to track down the $300,000 taken in that heist. for the third weekend in a row, "alice in wonderland" was tops at the box office, taking in $34.5 million, "diary of a wimpy kid" debuted in second place and "bounty hunter" starring january fer aniston was third. you're up-to-date. basically looking at some wet weather here in the northeast. big low pressure area, spinning around, right around tennessee, bringing frozen precip, rain as well. it works its way toward the northeast. as it does, it will be bringing copious amounts of rain and snow into northern new england. flood watches in new jersey, on into interior new york, parts of new england. the reason for that? we're already talking about saturated ground, swollen rivers and add to that another three to five inches of rain along the

the pro tour. peter, good morning. >> natalie, good morning. this is the first time tiger woods has spoken without a script since his scandal exploded november 27th. two exclusive interviews, one to the golf channel, the other to espn, five minutes each. a life that even tiger admitted had been a fraud. >> i was living a life of a lie. i really was. and i was doing a lot of things that i said that hurt a lot of people and stripping away denial and rationalization, you start coming to the truth of who you really are, and that can be very ugly. >> so ugly that tiger woods described that he was disgusted by his own actions. >> goinggainst your core values, losing sight of them. i quit meditating. i quit being a buddhist. and my life changed upside down. i felt i was entitled, which i never had felt before. and consequently, i hurt so many people by my own, you know,

reckless attitude and mafr. >> during his duelling interviews, he was cordial and composed but also guarded. >> why did you lose control of the car? >> as i said, that's between elin and myself. >> woods said he faced one low point after another these past several months and discussed having to ultimately reveal the truth about his infidelity to his wife, elin, and his own mother. >> the two people in my life who i'm the closest to. and, you know, to say the things that i have done, truthfully, to them is -- honestly was, you know, very painful. >> you say you've made transgressions. how would you, in your own words, describe the depth of your infidelity? >> just one is enough. and, obviously, that wasn't the case. i made my mistakes and, as i've said, i've hurt so many people. so many people i have to make amends to.

that's living a life of amends. >> woods was asked why he ever got married. >> why? because i loved her. i loved elin with everything i have. and that's something that makes me feel even worse, that i did this to someone i love that much. >> kelly tillman of the golf channel, who has covered tiger for years, asked him what his father, the late earl woods, would have said. >> he would be very disappointed in me. he would be very disappointed in me. we would have numerous, long talks. that's one of the things i miss. i miss his guidance and wish i could have had his guidance through all of this. >> i sensed when we were discussing personal topics, he was gentler than before. you could sense a softness that you hadn't about him before. >> what will he tell his children, 2-year-old sam and 1-year-old charlie? >> we'll sit down and talk. it won't be one time. it will be numerous times. i take full ownership of it. i did it.

no one else did it. it was just me. that's the responsibility i will have. i will talk to my kids for however longthy want to talk about it. that is a conversation that will need to be had. >> with his return to golf scheduled for next month at the masters, woods admitted being a little nervous about the reception from fans. >> it would be nice to hear a couple claps here and there, but also hope those are also claps for birdies, too. >> first time we've seen that billion dollar smile in months. obviously, none of the familiar swagger. as we noted, tiger was guarded at times during that conversation. he admitted to spending weeks in in-patient treatment, but he wouldn't say exactly what that was for. also when asked about the state of his marriage, natalie, he said we're working on it, that it was, in his words, a pross but that it's going to remain a private matter between him and his wife, elin. >> peter alexander, thanks so much. could your marriage survive infidelity? robi ludwig and courtney hazlett for msnbc.com.

your impressions of the tiger woods interview? >> very calm, unscripted interview. you think for a second he didn't practice every possible question with his team, you're definitely mistaken there. he is also speaking to his fans, shoring up his base, hard-core golf fans, the people who buy his clubs, the kid whose already looked up to him. he is definitely talking to an audit yeps that wants to bring him back, maybe not people who turned away when necessity broke. >> necessity before the comeback tour? >> way more humble. obvious he has been through a crisis and experienced a lot of pain. what i think he said in the interview, that he missed talking to his father and having that guidance, that that was very real and i think that contributed to him getting so off track. >> what stands out is the admission of all his failures, his admission that he did, as he said, really bad things. but now, as peter pointed out, he is working on his relationship with elin.

is there any good news to be taken from this, robi? can couples survive infidelity? we're dealing with a huge star. that, in itself, may add more difficulty. >> with infidelity, there's a communication breakdown. obviously, two people are not connecting in the way that you would want them to connect. so, what can happen when infidelity is discovered, it's a crisis and it really helps couples discover a truth. what's going on that's not working? what do you need to have in the relationship that, you know, two people are not getting from one another? so, it can open up a  conversation. and two people can decide, do we really want to be in this relationship? >> will the celebrity factor, courtney, in your opinion, hurt them in terms of really trying to work it out? >> i think it hurts any couple who is in this situation, because the details of that betrayal are so much more textured and dynamic because of the way they're broken in the media. it doesn't just become so-and-so cheated on his wife or -- it becomes who is the person they

cheated with? what is their past like? you get more details than you might ever get if it was, say, a normal couple. >> yeah. and in terms of when he talked about how far things went, he said i've done some pretty bad things in my life, but now after going for in-patient treatment for 45 days and more out-patient treatment i'm getting back to my old roots. the acknowledgement of the problem, robi, is that really the first step in repairing the marriage? >> yes. it sounds like he was in denial. >> he peeled back the layers, he was disgusted. >> that's what therapy can help you to do, look at your life honestly, with the eyes of a professional, who can help you understand why you're doing what you're doing. very often, people don't understand why they are behaving the way they are behaving, especially when it's self destructive. >> the use of that word, entitled, though, is so important. >> entitlement, right. >> during his public apology, he said that as well. in terms of the whole idea of celebrity and when celebrities go off track whatever their morals were growing up, entitlement seems to be mostly

at play. they're so used to having the money to pay for whatever they want any time they want but rarely do you hear any of them admit it. >> entitled and he lost sight of his core values, stopped meditating and stopped being a buddhist. >> that's what morals are really for. it's not who is good, who is bad but morals, ideally, help us to stay in a healthy place. >> now, switching gears now, let's talk about the other couple, celebrity couple that's been in the spotlight recently. that's sandra bullock, moved out of her house after revelations and allegations that her husband, jesse james, was having an affair with a tattooed stripper. the question here is, you know, again, you have the celebrity factor. and ndra really seemed to be caught blindsided, to use the word, by the whole thing. >> right. >> do you think there are clues, robi, that lead up to something like this being exposed? >> i'm sure. hindsight is 20/20. when you're living your life and

things are busy, it's very possible that a wife would not know if her husband was having an fair. we don't know if he was in love with this person or if it was just for the sex. she's a very busy woman. when you have someone who is career minded, they're focused on that and for some men that's hard to tolerate. >> what would be the course of treatment -- obviously this is just coming to light and starting to get out there. >> they honestly have to discuss what the affair meant. they have toecide whether they want to work through the relationship and be in the relationship in a different kind of way. there needs to be honesty and they need to deci, you know, do they want to commit to one another and not have affairs? >> you have an interesting take. you say that you would need to start by asking what the affair would say if it could talk. >> yes. >> what do you mean by that? >> because an affair is a communication. it's a behavioral communication that's not being put into words. so, for example, would jesse james say, hey, this is a woman i was just having sex with and i

>> every single thing i thought i knew about myself, everything i thought i knew about life had to be questioned and kind of rebuilt. >> including understanding why her marriage had collapsed. >> the thing i had to realize in the course of my divorce is there were mistakes i made. i sort of had a plan and kind of expected chris to just live it with me. i wasn't paying as much attention to where he was going in his life and what he needed, as i would have liked. what i also realized is that those mistakes aren't necessarily why we're not married anymore. evybody makes mistakes in their relationship. >> stas stacey morrison, good morning. dale atkins, good to have you here. >> hi. >> as editor in chief of the magazine, your job is to oversee articles about marriage. >> yes. >> how to keep your marriage ppy, safe and healthy. was the irony lost on you? >> absolutely not. it was actually quite shocking,

because he told me he wanted to end our marriage about 3 1/2 weeks before i got the job and i just remember being like, do i even get to do this job? do i have to tell someone my husband and i are struggling? there were so many moments in those years when i was on the "today" show giving advice about marriage, good advice about marriage and i just had to live through that. it was interesting. >> what's interesting, you say yowere blind sided at that moment when he said i'm done it basically went from color -- your world went from color to black and white. were there no clues along the way that he was unhappy in the marriage that you missed? >> right. one of the reasons i wrote the book is because i was quite stunned by what comes back at you when you are going through a breakup. people want to know the answers and they want to know the why. in the beginning you want to take their answers and comfort yourself with them. finally i realized you don't get to know why but you get to ask anyway. of course there are clues. which is one is the iceberg? if your wife told you tomorrow, you could have gone back and

said wow, i should have let her have the linguine at the restaurant. >> lot of emotion and pain through this. >> yes. >> what are the stages you go through? >> everything you say, the shock, denial, anger and the grief. what i was struck by, it was the grief, the grief, the grief, some more grief and then a side serving of grief. i feel like when we talk about divorce in our culture, certainly with everything that goes around celebrities, there's the anger and accusations and the blame. it's about loss. you don't win a divorce. you lose. and i wanted people to help me honor my marriage, not bury it. >> and i think dale, when a lot of people talk about divorce, they say sometimes it's worse than a death because it's a different kind of grief in that the person is still in your life, but in a very weird wa especially you just having had a child. >> right. >> so how do you work that out? >> well, you work it out in very different ways. and i think that stacey talks about a very wonderful way in which you can -- you go through it and go through all the feelings you have and try to

build on the other side so that you can have a relationship that honors the marriage and honors the future that you have, and the life you want to build separately. if you have a child, that's really something that so many couples need to work towards if they can. but the grief issue, it's about loss of all kinds, because what happens is when you have a particular loss at this time, it triggers a previous loss that you had. and you learn from those previous losses and i know that you also learn from the opportunities that you got from losing a job. and people think, what are the opportunities? you learn so much about yourself. >> that's true. >> you integrate them into your life and then you move forward right. ?ge, now your with t you guys have a very healthy co-parenting relationship. >> right. >> for your 5-year-old son. >> i really think it's the crowning achievement of my life, is my good divorce. i really do thank my ex-husband for the ways in which that he worked with me for us to have a connected breakup. one of the reasons i wrote the book is to show that we're not
