like the red shirts. >> thank you. >> let's go back in to ann. al, thanks. this morning on "today's daily dose," oh, my aching feet. an estimated 1 in 6 americans are not putting their best foot forward because they're suffering from problems ranging from bunions to arthritis to diabetes. nbc's chief medical editor dr. nancy snyderman is here with advice on how to relieve your pain and stay healthy. here's something i would have never put together. you say that our feet are a glimpse into our overall health. >> you just hit on one of the big things, diabetes. diabetes affects the blood circulation, the nerves in your feet. if you're a diabetic and you have wounds that aren't quite healing or an ingrown toenail, it can absolutely reflect your overall state of well being. the biggest problem for most of us is our feet hurt. that's because we pound them to death and there are a lot of doctors making a lot of money because of that. it is a $2 billion a year industry just to fix hurt feet.
9:07 am
>> because this is the part that is most injured of any other part of our body? >> 26 bones, 33 joints. it is a complicated little area that we pound. >> let's get to our questions. the first one comes from outside. we've got carla and her sister kevvy visiting from missouri. hey, women, what's your question? >> hi, dr. nancy. we're from st. louis. my sister's always been my hero because she exercises every day. but recently, she started having really, really bad foot pain. now she's gone and bought all these gimmicks, different splint to wear at night, special shoes. she spent a couple hundred dollars but she's still got this really bad foot pain. they say it is plantar fasciitis. >> plantar fasciitis. the facia is kind a canvas sheet and it holds the bottom, the soul of the foot and wraps up
9:08 am
around the heel. a couple things happen. as we get older we lose fat pads on our heel and depending on what -- especially athletes when they pound their feet a lot, that facia can become inflamed. first thing to do is make sure you are taking basic anti-inflammatories like advil or aspirin if you can tolerate. t. make sure you're wearing the right shoes. get out of the shoes that you're wearing all the time and rotate them. and then simple things. resting, elevating. if those things don't make it better, then you can go into things like orthodics foot doctor. the fact she is a runner makes her more prone. >> thank you for that question. linda now is on the telephone from concord, california. hi, linda. what's your question? >> hi, thanks for taking my call. when i go outside and it is cold like 65 degrees and below, my toes get numb. actually so do my fingers at
9:09 am
times and the blood seems to have left them. it turns kind of whitish-yellow. any idea what's happening? >> yeah, you may well have something called raynaud's syndrome. it is a scirculatory problem. you can consider this a disability if it is bad enough. can you even get a placard to park closer to work. if your fingers and toes are turning white or purple, you're not getting enough circulation and it means that you may have to wear those little mitt warmers. you may have to wear an extra pair of socks. it is really a vascular problem. once you have it, you have it so you have to work hard to make sure that it doesn't get worse. >> thank you so much, linda. we have an e-mail question about bunions. the question reads, i'm one of those people who suffers from foot problems, bunions. it is such a horrible shooting pain. it's terrible. i feel that all i can wear is flip-flops. please help. >> so, look.
9:10 am
this is, to some extent, runs in families but you and i know what this is. it is the first joint that juts out. can you see it in women who are addicted to their high heels. we put tons of pressure on our foot and especially that part of the foot. bun yons hurt. get out of those high heels, get in a shoe that has a wide toe box be that has some stability. but that's a big, big surgical problem if it goes too far. >> speaking of flip-flops, a lot of young people, teenagers, wear flip-flops all the time. >> all the time. >> problem with that? >> well, you need arch support. if you're going to wear them, wear the leather ones, the really thin ones are not meant for good foot support. >> mary lou is on the phone from new york city. she has a question. >> hey, how are you? thanks for taking my call. i think i've noticed with between the third and fourth toes on my right foot, the burning pain is excruciating.
9:11 am
i've tried orthodic inserts, cortisone shots and now finally a series of alcohol solution shots and nothing has helped alleviate the pain. i understand that there are a couple of types of surgeries but they're not always successful and occasionally exacerbate the problem. >> a neuroma is a benign tumor of the nerve. it is a lump and it is painful. especially if it is between toes, there just isn't enough space. and sometimes -- i would have to say a lot of times -- sort of the early treatment of cortisone shots and rest doesn't help. so this is when you really want to see an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in feet and see about having that removed. most likely that's going to be a surgical problem. it goes to something, a core problem for all of us, and that is we neglect our feet so easily. it is important to remember, change your shoes, go barefoot around the house, if you can. pedicures are really good hygiene for your feet. they make your feet healthy. then wash them every day, make
9:12 am
sure they're clean. if you just change those things, that basic preventative work can get rid after lot of these problems. >> the underlying thing we've not talked that much about is sort of the shoes we choose to wear. >> let me say, i don't want everyone to think i'm a hypocrite because i have these on. they've never seen a sidewalk. they are for in here only. >> i see new your big clunky shoes. >> i wear clogs. >> me, too. katie and evan. one of the ways to tell if you have the right footwear, take your foot out and look at it next to the shoe. katie's toe box, that area between both toes quifits and ls like it fits right into her shoe. evan's, while the gold high heels are glamorous, the shoe is narrower than her foot. 9 out of 10 women wear shoes that don't hit, 8 out of 10 women wear shoes that hurt them. those are just dumb odds for
9:13 am
smart women. >> that's a very nice way to end it. now we know a new phrase called "toe box." dr. nancy snyderman, thank you so much. coming up, one expert's advice for brat-proofing your kids. and once you've done that, maybe they'll be inspired to take you on a trip. we've got the top five mother's day getaways right after this. 9:46 am
the "where's my jacket" syndrome? >> yes, everybody wants to have a child who is responsible because responsible kids really know how to make things happen. they know the connection between their actions and the consequences of their actions. so for example, we give children responsibilities. we expect them to meet them, then in fact when they don't meet them, we allow them to suffer the consequences of their not meeting those responsibilities. so you lose your jacket, you weren't responsible, and it snows, oh, well. going to be cold. >> because as a parent we want to make sure they're wokay, they're protected. but stichs it but sometimes it is okay to let them make a mistake like that. >> sometimes it involves them suffering. because that's how they learn. >> "go to your room." >> is that "go to your heart"? >> yeah. it kills you to say it, but sometimes you need to say it. >> that chapter is all about respect. the factory-equipped model child comes equipped with temperament

and with instincts, but it doesn't come with the things that we want them -- the values that we want them to have so we have to work on those. respect is one of them. when we hear that a child isn't respectful, it's horrible. for example, treat your child with respect. a child who treats his parents with respect has been treated respectfully. that means listening to them, putting down your blackberry when he's talking to you. paying attention. certainly it means catching him being respectful so he can learn what it means to be respectful. little kids don't get that. and finally, it is so important to allow your child to do over. so when he hasn't been respectful, you can say, do you want to do that over? do you want to say that in a better way? >> then we've all heard, "i'm bored." and p.s., there's nothing wrong with that. >> well, you hit it on the head, al. there's nothing wrong with it. a child who says "i'm bored" hasn't learned to be self-reliant. in my book i talk about all the ways we help kids be self-reliant. self-reliance is a fabulous
